Help with addition ideas for quirky existing layout.

Hello! Our family recently moved into our "weekend home" full time. It's a place where we spend tons of time outside and enjoy our nature views. We bought the house when it was just a shell and had the interior finished. Completed that construction when it was just the 2 of us and we now have a daughter and are wanting to add on a master suite with a large bedroom, large bathroom, and large walk-in closet. We LOVE how many windows and doors we have and our huge deck. We are stumped on where and how to add on the master suite. Any ideas?

Attached is the existing layout as it's been built.

We are too close to our boundary lines on the rectangular side of the building to add on that side.

I'm happy to answer any questions, ask away!

The Cook's Kitchen - absolutely! Planning on doing that with our contractor in a few weeks. Just trying to get a few ideas going here to find inspiration.

You will have to sacrifice windows or doors somewhere for this to happen, but the impact could be fairly minimal depending on where you choose. When you say the rectangular side, I assume you are saying you cannot add onto the house at the bottom of the floor plan above. Is the front door where the little deck is between the bedroom and living room?

The only real options I see for an addition are off the entry going up in your drawing, matching the angles on the living room OR off the dining room the left in your picture. You would lose the slider out of the dining room and that small piece of deck, but you could maintain those same views with windows in the master bedroom.

ptreckel - definitely. Thanks for asking!

Best views are out towards the property from the deck, also seen from the dining and living rooms. A second story is an interesting idea! We have very high ceilings right now slanted with the roof, but I'm open to that change for sure!

Emily Jowers - Thanks for your comment! We are OK to sacrifice windows and doors, just wanted to note that we love having them :) Correct, the bottom of the floor plan is the side that we can't add on to. The front door is the small deck between the bedroom and dining room. It's our initial idea to come off of there, but we are having trouble determining how to add on to that side. Open up the living room into a hallway? How far out would that "wing" be? and do we walk into and through a bathroom and closet area to get to the bedroom (furthest from the living room, which would allow the best views?)

Love the house! The entrance to the bedroom would have to be off the living room. You could extend the front out to match the bedroom on the other side of the entry. Ideally, the bedroom would be in the back so you could have all the windows there. I'd have to draw it out to see what would work best.

150K-300K plus an architect can make it happen. But you have to find the architect first. Not the builder. Architects design. Builders build what architects design.

Architect. Not contractor. Not a "designer." Not a draftsperson.

    Architect. Go from there.

Agreed, you need an architect. The site will dictate so much of what is possible. Since your home has a unique shape and so many windows, what about the master addition being housed in a separate “pod” which connects to the main house via a walkway? The new shape could be sympathetic to the original and look as if the two always belonged together. You could have a nursery/office in the master pod to keep your little one close.

Emily Jowers - thank you! We love this home so much. Would love to see your brainstorm sketches if you do :)

Sophie Wheeler benjesbride strategery - definitely working with an architect. I'm just trying to get a little inspiration here to see if there's an idea or two that I haven't thought about before our design consultation.

rainyseason - awesome idea!!! That could be really cool! Just curious what you think a walkway would look like? Just a covered path? Screened in? Glass "hallway"? I know we could do it any of these ways, just curious what your opinion would be from seeing the photos. Thanks!!

Anyone else have ideas or willing to share a quick sketch?

A sketch from us won’t help at all but there are lots of inspiration pictures here for you to use with your architect once they are on board.

Do your own Idea Books to share with your architect. But with those constraints, you need an above average design pro, and an above average budget.
