Area rug advise for blue velvet sectional

any thoughts on what type and color area rug would best suit our new sectional? the sectional is a royal blue velvet - walls are white. Please try to ignore the shelves - this is not a super styled home, this is our family room and the kids art takes precedence :) The area rug in photo is from the previous sectional. Thanks!!

What a fun space. Would you consider pulling colors from the rug to add pillows and throws to the sectional and make it all work together?

I think something bright like you have now would be great. If it wasn't so big, I would say to keep that one. Adding side tables may help fill the overhang? And then add a few throw pillows in colors from the rug.

Here are a couple others that I like.

Honestly, I think the rug you have looks fantastic with it. It helps to draw the eye to some of the art especially the art and photos that have red in them. I love the sofa.

You could keep the rug you have and just add some pillows or here's a rug suggestion that has a white background with blue design.

    A. Put a long sofa table between the wall and the sofa to take up some of the excess carpet. If you don't have one find a long interesting board and secure legs to it. pull the sofa out a bit. Pull the ottoman more diagonally. B. find fabrics that pull colors from the carpet. Don't expect to find ready made, get your sewing skills in order.

Patricia Hall Consulting - yes, thank you! currently have jewel toned teal and orange pillows. end tables would be the next challenge. I like polished wood stumps or maybe a marble top - I think when I see the right one I'll know.

Disclaimer: Not a designer. Just like to play with the rug thing. Lots of colors and patterns. Anything goes with that sofa.

I agree the rug you have now looks great! You could move the couch away from the wall and maybe center on the rug, if there is room to do that. Add some pillows and you're done!

And more art work on the wall over the couch!

The sectional is lovely but it is also a big "blob" (in a good way) of dark blue. I suggest something way lighter or with a lighter background like one of those distressed looking rugs Barnes Custom Builders posted above, perhaps in multiple colors so you can accessorize with throw pillows. I have distressed rug in my family room. It covers a multitude of sins...crumbs, lint, real distressing, etc.

thank you samondragon - agree, the distressed rugs are so handy and very pretty. I have one in a bedroom, I adore it. I also think I'm going to go more neutral and let the sectional be the star

so want me to toss the ones i put up and do you want lighter or 2 color?

Havingfun - thanks! I think I’m good - I’m going to go with a blue and white and add pops of green though the room with plants and maybe a throw.

I think the rug is fine, just pull the sectional away from the wall so you don't have that expanse of space to the left.

Furniture shouldn't really be smack against the wall anyway.

    Another suggestion-

Have you thought about painting the back wall of your shelving unit another color than brown?

Right now it looks very dark.

Why not take some posterboard/chipboard, you can buy huge ones for a dollar at the dollar store and paint them them different colors and cut them to fit the back of the shelves (not the shelves themselves.) Also see what you think about your wall color, some of the colors in your carpet, too.

You can also use the same chipboard and cover it with wrapping paper, fabric or wall paper, something rather neutral so your children's artwork will shine. This way, it will be temporary and you can change it up any time the mood strikes, and you can involve your children in the project, too.

I would use a rug with tan/taupe neutrals and blue accents - a small quiet pattern., a bit quieter than the rugs in Finally’s 2nd and 3rd pics. Then put up lots more kid photos and creations!

Thanks loobab - I can’t pull it away from the wall, there is a door in constant use to the right of it. Couldn’t go smaller with the sofa because we’re a family of 5 - lots of bottoms to sit. The brown shelves are wood. I know I should paint them but I think that’s a very “now” look and I’m afraid I’d be stripping them in years to come and that makes me cringe. I have thought of papering the backs, but I’m concerned that might look amateurish. Thanks for the suggestions

    Oh, I see.

You can still use the chipboard that is painted or covered with paper or wall paper.

Take a look online. It doesn't look amateurish at all.

What we see is black in her current rug that is kinda, eh? .... It would be nicer if it were a blue color where the black is perhaps, or not? For fun, like the 3rd from the Top/Finally's post. For style, the 2nd from the bottom and just so soft looking...the bottom one is awesome. Bring some of those gold/gold yellow, colors to your couch pillows, but so nice with the wood tones in the room....bring just lighter blues or aqua's to the couch in pillows and let it be The Blue Area in the room of warm and family friendly wood tones if you go with the tones of the lowest rug in Finallys' post... So pretty for a family!!

I know this is an ancient thread, but where did you get the rug?
