Area rug advise with new sectional

Any thoughts on what type of area rug you'd use with our new sectional? Sofa is blue velvet, room is heavily used family room, please try to ignore shelves and items on shelves. Current area rug is from previous sectional. Maybe I just leave it? Husband hates the area rug. And I know the sectional is placed wrong on the area rug, the delivery men just left - I'll fix it.

I like the current combination. Try turning the sectional and see what you think.

Hard to say without seeing the whole room, doorways, circulation pattern, etc.

There are thousands of rugs to choose from so it's very difficult to just throw out there "what type of area rug" without more direction. Why does your husband hate to current rug? What is your goal for the design of the room?

these rooms are beautiful - they don't have big dark wood cabinets in the background but they peaked my interest

Can we see the other side of the room? I agree with turning the sectional if it fits another direction.

I feel like if your husband hates the rug and you have the funds, get a new one. No one should hate things in their home, and the rug is bold so it's hard to ignore (although I love it myself).

Thanks mrykbee! I love it too but I respect his hatred so I'll put it in our living room - he doesn't care about that room :)

    sistersunnie - I wish I could but it's facing the television :(

chispa - it's a thoroughfare, has a wet bar and fireplace, 2 standard door openings and one large opening to kitchen, three windows. Very awkward room

jck910 - I realize that, sorry - I should have been more specific in my inquiry. I'm wondering if a couch that saturated in color belongs on top of color or a more neutral base like cream or gray. Husband can't tell me why, I just don't think he likes pops of color the way I do. I had it under my dining room table originally but it turned my white walls pink - very reflective. Now, it will head into the living room. As for my goal, just comfort and function without looking sloppy and my style lends to a more Scandinavian look, I love Danish furniture, eclectic - no themes.

I've always kind of loved this rug although I've never seen it in person. It seems to fit the color and relaxed, comfy style of your sectional.

    Fluffy Blue and White Rug

If you can't move the sectional, get a very large rug that reaches the tv area and thus will tie the whole room together. As is, it looks like the sofa is plopped on an island or barge for transportation to somewhere else.

celerygirl and mrykbee I think you nailed it with the blue and white rug!!

I need to start saving up for it. Maybe a large green palm sort of plant/tree?! I am so touched by this site - the fact that folks take time to research and play with my photo really blows my mind.

I agree with Hubby; the rug and sofa together are too intense.

Sofa looks super comfy. Personally, I love both mockups celerygirl did with the rugs. I would choose the Home Depot rug because of all the colors you could bring to the room in art and pillows. Just my two cents.

I like the middle rug in celery girls' mock-ups post. I think the muted colours allow your couch to stand out more.

Think your husband is right. The rug is overpowering. Like the rugs celery girl posted or first one in Grover’s post.
