Purple Sectional dominates room

The situation:
Open concept modern home with light gray concrete floors. All white walls.
One large and very purple sectional.

The issue:
Rug colors?
I am clueless.

The goal:
A comfortable, conversation-oriented space, toddler friendly, and a balance between masculine and feminine.

Something like the photo I have shared, but with more color choices. A Beige rug will stain easily. A Gray rug will blend with the floors and fail to create a sense of comfortable space.

Your baby needs to learn to sleep with ligthts and noise FYI so go ahead and take a picture.

Yeah, I'm sure the OP is going to risk waking the baby because some random stranger on the internet says to do so.

LOL... Here is the picture. Consider it a blank canvas of sorts. This is the view from the kitchen and front door.

The TV will be moved to another room.
Imagine the space without the toys and the temporary bedding.

I’d like to highlight the umbrella tree.

Imagine in the beige couch’s place, a purple 9x11 sectional. The room is open concept and 20x30 ft.

Awesome!! I love my huge teal sectional AND the rug I chose for all of the reasons you mentioned sorry photos are a little dark, rug needs to be moved a few inches

Here is a better pic of the rug, and the much nicer, more expensive, but also very resistant Egyptian rug I have in the LR which has a purple sofa (only pic I could find :)

The purple sectional in the OP reminds of Barney the Purple Dinosaur all splayed out ... but that said, I love it. I think it's unexpected, young, and fun. For the rug, I'd probably start with looking at transitional abstract designs. The choices really are practically endless.

    @greenfish1234

I like your choice of a bold rug with your purple couch. Very cool. Comfortable and fun. (Hi kitty!)

I wonder, can I create the same visual interest with texture rather than patterns?

From what I’ve seen, purple works well with teal, dark reds, yellows, oranges and grays.

    And white.

The choices are endless and that is why I feel lost! Lol
  • 7 years ago

I wonder, can I create the same visual interest with texture rather than patterns?

If you're concerned about stains and have a toddler, patterns are your friend. Your current rug has a pattern. They can be more subtle, including tone on tone if that's your concern.

They now make play mats in grown-up patterns:

Funny the rug that my kitty is lying on is a fairly traditional style overall, it's just the colors are so rich and the pattern so intricate up close. I'll show you a picture of the whole room when I get back. You would be surprised how traditional some really out there seeming choices can look when it's all put together. I would agree that pattern is so important to livability. But I do love textured rugs, real wool flokati rugs are one of my favorites, kind of similar to the one in your purple sofa picture above

The idea of a flokati rug is always nicer than the reality lol. But if a homeowner insisted, I'd definitely suggest waiting until any kids are older.

Stepping on legos hidden in flokati rugs isn't fun.

The playmats Jennifer posted are really, really nice. And expandable, so you could get it just the right size,

If you're adventurous...and quirky...take a look at "casino carpet". It has the wildest colors and patterns. The edge can be bound for use as a rug. Needless to say, it wears like iron.

How about using FlorRug carpet tile. It comes in a wide variety of color and pattern. You can essentially design your own rug, mixing and matching. Also, you can get a few extra tiles to replace badly stained sections.

great floors, love the sofa, cool room! ( although, your poor tree is scraggly and needs a bigger pot for his roots!)

have you considered an overdyed wool rug? I have one of these (in blue) and they wear very well. stains (cat barf) wipes up easily enough, and it's a cinch to vacuum. I love these rugs.

they come in an array of colors, and they have the patchwork design.

I just saw a pic of this vintage rug and thought the purple/gray colors would work for you. it's vintage, almost 7'X11' and listed for $43?? Perfect for you room. If you do the vibrant purple sofa, I think something in these gray/lavenders would work nicely.

Thank you for the rug suggestions. I think we are going to choose a dark grey. Probably not shag though. The LEGOs comment hit home. LOL

The plant, an umbrella tree native to Australia, is a rescue from an abandoned building. It has survived without any care for a number of years in that very pot. So I am afraid to repot it, but probably will in the future.

I would not call it “scraggly”, though. It’s architectural! ;)

    @beckysharp

The Little Nomad playmats are wonderful! I had no idea those existed.

We have brightly colored mats in his room and I’ve tested then myself. A scream-inducing bonk on the head is hard to make happen with that thickness of foam. Concrete, and even concrete with a rug overlaying it, is a different story.

Thank you for the suggestion! We were planning on using industrial size foam mats. But the color choices are certainly not as appealing.

JG,,,maybe I should have said, 'leggy'. lol. I have a couple of those so I know how full they can be. a slightly larger pot and some fresh potting soil will do wonders. It will thank you. (and daily misting)

@BethH Wow, really? I had no idea they could be different looking and much fuller. I may have to dedicate some of my budget to a really nice pot. Thank you again. :)

JG,,oh yes. they get very big and bushy.

yours is leggy prob because it's a little pot bound. they are also prone to spider mites (get a magnifier and look under a leaf for any little red mites) so mist it daily if you can

Yes to FLOR rugs , they actually look nice in person & you will appreciate the ability to replace stained sections ... it WILL happen, something will stain it. Pets, toddlers or adults, unless the room will be off limits.

I'm not a design professional but personally I'd steer clear of any rugs that have purple in them. Why? The sofa is mammoth enough and I think you need a large dose of a neutral -- like in your inspiration pic -- to balance it out. I like Beth H's 6th (last) example of the over-dyed rug that's grey (at least on my monitor it's grey) and think that would work well on grey concrete. I.e., go with a grey rug in similar tone as your concrete, but with a pattern for interest.

But also note in your inspiration they've got both warm (rug and wood floor) and cool tones (sofa) going on. That sort of a mix is more challenging to pull off but can look quite sophisticated when done right. Not sure how it would work with a grey concrete floor assuming the floor is cool toned.

I've lost my boldness. I told the in-laws we changed our mind about the purple couch. My mother told me to trust my heart. And I've never been a big fan of purple. I know that in 6 months, even with all the great ideas I've learned from this post, that I would be dang sick of that purple behemoth. LOL....so back to my plan for a modern style green couch. My original inspiration--

Beth H, thank you for your plant advice. Who knows how old that plant is and what it is capable of with a new pot and new soil.

Good call. I wasn't going to say anything but when you showed the ACTUAL sofa? It lacks the style to pull of the color. The sofa above is great :)

having fun posted some nice rugs.

So instead of going Barney purple sofa, why not stick w/the grays/charcoals and do the purple tones for accents?

for instance, gray velvet sectional, gray rug w/purple tones, new console for the tv (move that sofa off the wall and flip it around so it faces it.) and perhaps do a purple side chair, or a bench, or even a chaise.

if you had a dark gray sofa, did a lighter gray leather barcelona chair, then you could be a few of the purple accents shown above.

grays/purples/silver/lavender/whites/ all go so well together.

so,, do you want me to get rid of some of the rugs? you know green goes great with purple. not to bright so there is no competition but still. if it is solid, it will still give a strong neutral base to work with.

Here is the GREEN couch I ordered yesterday. I liked the dark color, the positive reviews, and the within-budget price. I plan to do a navy rug and a round coffee table with a dark wood grain. We have a piano in the room with dark wood grain too.

Green makes so much more sense because we have a NanaWall to install in the living room. Outside is woods. In the autumn, the changing leaves add a warm golden hue. In the summer, a green hue is cast on the white walls.

ok I really like the deep rich purple in the sectional. but i simply adore it is a couch and that it is dark green just really puts it over the top. i cannot quite get a clear pic of the exact shade of green. be careful what color blue rug you get. just in case

how did you come up w/navy blue rug for that sofa? maybe blue on the walls, or in artwork,,,

but that green in your sofa pic leans a bit more on the teal/olive side of green

    here it is w/navy

for you room, I actually like a leopard print better.

    greens/golds are so pretty together

however, with your polished concrete floor, I love this Gray-Green overdyed rugwith your sofa, wood and maybe a blue side chair.

But, I think this sea foam color chair from World Market goes perfect w/the color combos. and the gold is a nice bonus.

or if you want more of the blues in the rug, I think these would fit your space quite well.

@bethH. I really like gold accents as well, but my bf does not. So gold is a no-go. I also won’t go with chrome because I get aggravated by the sun shining off of it.

The floors are finished concrete, but not polished. Yet. Someday, maybe. They are light colored gray.

I got the idea for the blue rug from a photo online. I like neutrals, dark blues and dark greens. I am curious what shade of green the couch ive ordered will look like in person.

I will post a picture of it in the space when it is delivered.

Thank you to everyone for all of your suggestions. I just can’t do purple. Haha
  • 7 years ago

Bronze sounds like a good compromise but if you like gold I'd totally sneak in a touch of gold in an accessory and see if your bf notices.

@jenniferM My bf came home today to find that I had began coloring our $10 garage sale found table with Sharpies. “This is what happens when you don’t let me accessorize with gold!” Haha

JG, you seem to like color. I think with your white walls and contemporary vibe this rug would look great with your green sofa . It comes in several color ways .

wow I am just in awe of the varied (each really nice in its own way) suggestions being offered here. I particularly love the rug right above this post (Dawson)and the Millken Modern Times.

@HavingFun. I really do like the copper and black. That is so classy looking. Especially the lamp

Anyone have any “live edge” table brand suggestions. That is something I’ve seen and really feel will fit this space.
@BethH wow! That sea foam and gold chair is perfect with this couch. After unpacking the couch, it is a hunter green. Dark and luxurious. I am quite pleased and it isn’t far off at all from the photo. After seeing it, I don’t think we will go with a blue rug. Maybe gray or beige instead.

I like the bright colors in the rugs some have suggested, especially when paired with about 8 fun pillows. But for the sake of my fiancé’s sanity, I will keep things neutral and chill with clean lines. That top photo with the green couch and wooden table seems spot on with my fiancé and I’s compromise on decor.

I figure as our life becomes more calm (the baby getting older) the color scheme will become more eccentric. For now, though, the peaceful neutrals and deep green offer solace amid the craziness of a baby and a home under construction.

Just scrolling through and the rug in your inspiration caught my eye, because I own it! It's super cheap - I got a 10x14 for about $270 on sale. https://www.houzz.com/products/machine-made-tracce-tc02-rug-blue-911x14-prvw-vr~37327813?lid=23409859

I know you said you were all set with rugs, just thought I'd pop in :-) I would caution that it is on the dark side, and isn't the highest quality rug ever, but it's great with stains (we have 2 dogs and a toddler).

Ha! Just scrolling through and saw what you did with the sharpies! It reminded me of what I did before we moved out of our house for its renovation. I bought a multi-pack of sharpies and let the kids draw on all of the walls. It was so fun. Then one day I saw my daughter drawing on a custom finished mantle that we had planned to save!! After I nearly passed out I looked it up and found that sharpie can be removed with rubbing alcohol...where is it now? Collecting dust in the attic, but now I wonder...maybe I have a new design dilemma brewing...
