I'm guilty... asiatic jasmin at base of my oak tree

I like the look of bark even more than the sight of the ground cover/vine growing up the trunk, so for years I have kept the long, climbing plant trimmed down... and felt smugly pleased with myself for not letting the plant take over the tree.

It was only today, after grabbing a handful of the matted vines at the base of the trunk and seeing how damp the trunk was, that I woke up. It would serve me right if I were to lose this oak. And the other oak I have similarly treated. Tomorrow: radical clearing work!

Oak tree #1 - Asiatic jasmine removal begun. Outer bark has disappeared. This is north side of tree... other sides may be not as injured.

No one has commented... does that mean disagreement? I'd sure like to know if I don't really need to concern myself with this.

Irma, I have a tale of 2 cities type of story. I planted asiatic jasmine in my garden , not around trees and became invasive, I took it out.

One of my neighbors have asiatic jasmine planted around his oak and looks nice, so it probably works for him.

The loss of the bark is bad but not necessarily the end of the tree. You will need to watch and see if the bark grows back or if it rots. You should probably spray a fungicide on it.
