wall decor, side/coffee table ideas, and curtains

slowly trying to redecorate on a budget.

wall behind the couch: I have a few of the white floating shelves I was going to put above the couch but I dont know if it will make it look cluttered.

Coffee table: right now I use a wicker trunk. But, I found a nice wood set of coffee tables and side tables with the british colonial look that I like(pictures attached). The only problem is I'm trying to pull in some gold and then eventually more plant/greenery.

Curtains: Getting rid of the vertical blinds was thinking about off-white to keep the room bright and flowy. most of the light is from the sliding glass door. And should I start from the ceiling or 6 inches above the door?

Ultimately I am going for a white blue and brown modern british colonial

Thoughts? I appreciate the help in advance!

I think a wood coffee table would be too dark in the room. The sofa and rug are dark and I don't think it will show up well. What's in front of the sliding glass door? Instead of shelves, I would add artwork over the sofa. Either a large canvas, or a series of smaller framed prints in the British Colonial style.

@katinparadise in front of the slider is a rear speaker and a black shelf sitting next to our entry way (I'm working on decluttering and possibly replacing I'm just running out of display places that I so desperately need). - Sorry I just realized you were asking what was sitting infront of the window its a stick of flaoting ikea shelves that i picked up for a good price. Thats what i was thinking of using but, like i said now that im looking at it. I'm not a fan (Still using them in the Man Cave though for figurines and such)

as far as wall decor goes I'm glad you think the same about the shelves... though I cant seem to find any large canvases that I love. I was looking at some gold metal work instead, but a single large piece just seems so underwhelming in that size of a space. Multiple pieces might look better.... I've seen some photo groupings in the British colonial style and love the idea of them but also sometimes look a little cluttered if not done right as well as the rest of the room doesnt have the "collector" feel to it that you would generally see that... but if you have some inspiration photos that show what you are thinking I'd totally love to see it

I would remove the ladder (that's a dated look) and fake? plant in the corner. Keep looking for a large canvas you love for over the couch. You really need some table lamps because overhead lights are harsh and awful. Declutter or get rid of the open bookcase; it ruins the look of the room, or is that something you've already gotten rid of?

Shelves just require stuff to fill them up. They can also be very difficult to arrange. 1 large piece of art can be a bit expensive but 3 20X24 or 1 24X36 and 2 20x24 prints flanking it in a series all in the same simple frames wouldn't look too busy. Here's a link to several Colonial Palm style prints on All Posters. Ordering standard sizes so you can put them in standard wood frames makes them a lot less expensive. https://www.allposters.com/-st/Palm-Tree-Posters_c6999_.htm?pathNumber=0&parentCategoryId=85164

If you're truly going for a British colonial look, those tables work. It's a pretty heavy look for a contemporary house with 8' ceilings.

We agree with grover that if you really are going British colonial those tables work. However it will really bring darkness into this already small space. The rug is dark, the tables are dark, the couch is dark, and there doesn't seem to be good lighting. You might want to consider adding some white in there or even glass to lighten things up a bit. Maybe try a white ottoman instead of the coffee table? How about the artwork in the picture below? If you're really doing British colonial try looking for artwork that would go with that. You also might want to try white pillows, and white window treatments, and art that has a lot of white in it to keep the space light. Maybe replace the plants base with white and the blanket in the latter with white. It will really help to lighten the space. For side tables, why not try c tables that have a white top or gold on them instead of something heavy?

isn't that is what that style is all about? all really dark woods and then because they were in hot countries, a lot of whites in your soft things.
