Mid-September weather in the Bay Area is a great time when the fog recedes and there's a warm glow everywhere. The roses like it too!

Oh Ann - I love multi-colored roses! I've never seen Pink Poodle before - the bloom form in your second photo is so unique and beautiful. I only have one mini at this time, and keep thinking it's time to add some more.

Thank you Lilyfinch and Tiffandrew for your kind words! I appreciate your posts and photos and too!

Karen - I love my minis! The most hearty one is Lavender Crystal which is more of a miniflora I got from Burlington Nursery. Burling Leong was a protege of the late Ralph Moore, the premier hybridizer of mini roses including Pink Poodle which is pretty rare at this point.

You can contact Burling at burlingtonroses@aol.com. She'll send you a list of minis and regular roses that she has available. Burling's nursery is in Visalia which might be even hotter than where you are. She could recommend good minis for your climate.

Ann, your roses, not to mention dahlias, are among the most beautiful I've seen on this forum. And your photos do them justice, too. All of these above are so uniformly wonderful, I can't pick a favorite, which is unusual for me, since I always seem to have a favorite. I've got to say that Lavender Chrystal is my favorite mini, hands down. It's a tiny bit of gorgeousness! Thanks for the info on Burling's rose offerings. LC is going to be hard to resist. Peach Swirl is a standout, too. I get hungry just looking at it (having eaten up all the peaches we had ripening on the counter), and I need more. Mitsouko has the most elegant and delicately shaded blooms. They seem of another world, almost. Thanks for all these enjoyable photos, Ann. Diane

Ann, what lovely roses you've posted. My hands-down favorites are Lavender Chrystal and Pink Poodle (love that name). I'm glad someone still has beautiful roses at this time of the year. It does help to have a cooler and more humid climate.

Thank you Ingrid! I believe I’ll have another flush soon which I’m looking forward to.

Wow Ann, that photo of Black Baccara! Is she really that dark and velvety looking in person? How does she perform throughout the year? Would you recommend? I LOVE red roses.

Hi Karen - BB is new for me, I just planted this rose a few months ago in a pot. The pic is one of the first blooms so I don't have that much experience with it but the color is true.

On HMF there are a lot of complaints due to the fact that BB has been called a "florist" rose that presumably needs to be grown in a greenhouse because it's climate and disease sensitive, and perhaps should not have been released to the general public to grow.

However, BB is doing well here near Napa, and another person said she won some trophies at rose societies in southern California. So I think it would do well in a warm, dry climate but I'm not sure how much heat it can handle. I heard from someone else that another Meilland rose, Papa Meilland is almost as dark as BB but is much healthier and very fragrant. I believe PM was introduced into North America in the 1960s so it's likely a tried and true rose for the general public to grow compared to BB.

I would give BB a chance if you don't mind the lack of fragrance. Or, you can wait a year and maybe I'll have more info!

Thanks Ann. I would love to hear in a year your findings. In the far east bay, my climate is very similar to Napa - maybe a tad hotter, but that's it. I did must purchase Papa Meilland last month as I found it on sale at a local nursery. If I find a nice BB locally, I'll grab it!

Here's BB after it rained last week. Notice the leaves in the bottom left corner aren't doing very well!

The disease was happening before the rain but it seems to be isolated to about 20% of the plant so far. Most of the blooms are very dark red but some are blackish red. I have a ton of small blooms right now. I think I may need to discourage the blooming so the ones that do bloom are larger.
