Which paint color for Kitchen accent wall?

Which accent wall paint color looks best (or none at all)? Blue gray, navy blue or white as is? I can ONLY paint walls and add window treatments and accents.

The interior designer i consulted with suggested that a dark accent wall in a deep blue would be stunning with a window treatment, runner and accents.

Pics of paint color on accent wall are computer generated.

I think the navy would be stunning.

Are the cabinets cream? What about the counter tops?

Cabinets are white but old and faded. Counter and floor are gray.

I love Navy and would do that in a heartbeat. My favorite Navy paint is Polo Blue BM but there are some amazing dark blues out there... And Navy has this amazing ability to transform a room within seconds after the paint is dry. It really is one of those great colors that go with so many other colors. Green, Yellow, Red, Orange, Beige, Brown, Off white, Cream, ....

Boxerpal...im looking at SW Naval vs BM Polo Blue. the swatch on wall is Naval ..ehat do u think?

in last pic Naval is bottom row, top is Polo Blue.

im open to suggestions to a navy color

I vote for the dark blue wall also, it will "hide" the fridge a little too.

thanks for your input luckyblueeye. it helps solidifying my decision because i HATED the blue when i swatched it because it felt too dark compared to my usual neutrals. The pics ive seen of navy blue walls and the votes of confidence are helping me to take the plunge!

I'd take the middle one where you have the three lined up near your window. It is dark enough . Liking the idea. The others seem a little deadening in your space.....the other elements in your kitchen are older/ worn/ some are yellowed. All the fancy pictures make use of new finishes/counters/cabinet fronts/backsplashes/etc to work off that dark. You don't have that going on. Let the blue have a little more life.....then the space will liven up.

Thanks herbflavor youre seeing what made me rethink going with navy because the other colors are deadening!

    Lala,

I am a huge fan of Polo Blue but in looking at your beautiful space I like the Naval SW. The biggest reason I went with Polo is because it matched the island cabinet. The island is by Cabico and the color is called Bonavista which is identical to Polo Blue. If I were choosing a color just out of the blue (no pun intended) I think I would go with that NAVAL blue by SW. That is a true blue navy color that really sings to my heart. I bet you will love it.

Not a fan of accent walls unless there is something of architectural significance to highlight, and in this case there isn't. I'd stick with all one color on the walls. To "accent" a wall looks to me more like there's a painting project still in the works.

Thanks SO much boxerpal! Your input just decided it for me. I really dislike colors/especially dark ones but now i see with the virtual designer pics how washed out the kitchen looks with white or gray vs the navy blue. I guess there's a reason the interior designer i consult with suggested it.
If i hate it and cant live with it i can always repaint as its a small wall. Im trying to stretch out from my very limited comfort zone!

Beautiful bbtrix!!! What would u say the difference is btwn Naval and color you chose?

Lala, is there a color you like better? You want to like the color you are using. I happen to love Navy and blues.. Maybe you are a orange or a yellow or pink or red? I would think about a color you like. YOu said you dislike colors.. Do you dislike them or fear them? I can understand fear. Because you mention a comfort zone and we all have that need to feel safe. We all want a comfort zone with color but the more you try color the safer color can feel. And putting up a color or wearing a color or buying a bright sofa or pillow can feel risky. You sound like a very practical person. Try the blue and if it doesn't work out you can alway paint it white again. THat is your fall back going back to color free. I only think you should choose a color you like to be around.

If you do go with the Navy Blue,

Maybe find something with a tiny bit of blue in it to tie it to the space. A rug, or vase, or dish towel.

If you have a large and dramatic kitchen an accent wall might be appropriate, but an average-sized or smaller kitchen does not need an accent wall. It will only highlight the fridge that juts out into the space. A nice rug and accent pieces, and some sort of pretty window covering, seems like a much better plan.

Hi boxerpal thanks again for all your input and suggestions. You are correct...i fear putting up a dark color and am comfortable with boring neutrals but Im ready to risk it and step outside of my comfort zone. It will either be stunning or i wont like it and can repaint. Im excited about the journey and taking a step outside of my neutral/light color comfort zone!

To answer your question, Naval is much darker than Revel. It has a LRV if only 4 where Revel is 14. The colors are very different next to each other. The light in your room will effect the outcome. Here’s a nice explanation of LRV. https://www.kylieminteriors.ca/paint-colours-and-lrv-the-ultimate-guide-to-choosing-the-right-colour/

Are you planning to paint the cabinets also? (not navy, but just to un dingy them?)

I generally love navy blues in the kitchen, but I am not feeling it here. It just seems to emphasize the awkwardness of the space -- but once you have a rug, and the other walls clean, and a window shade, it may be perfect.

As you say, if you hate it, it is easy to change (although it will take several coats to cover). Here is a house with a fabulous use of color in a smaller space, just to help you get over your fear -- one of my favorite projects on GardenWeb:

I am not able to paint the cabinets myself due to the regulations but i am seeing if maintenance will agree to paint them. it's VERY doubtful that they will.

I think the cabinets look fine. This is a rental and do what you can to make it a space you enjoy. The navy will be a fun exciting change. You might discover you like it.

Just wanted to follow up to thank everyone for your input and to show you the accent wall I decided to do in SW Naval. Im going to be replacing the blinds with white faux wood ones and am pretty sure Im going to look for a counter depth refrigerator. Im also looking into having the cabinets painted white sincethey are dingy.

A silly question maybe, however, I would like input....Should i keep the smaller stainless steel microwave or get one closer in size to my old white one shown in the pics (just look at sizes of each micro and ignore color). Something tells me the sizing/proportion is off with the small stainless one and Im thinking i might exchange it for a bigger one.

I like the stainless counter one especially if you go to a counter-depth fridge. Also like the color you chose.

Thanks Rantontoo...i appreciate it! I plan to get a stainless steel microwave either way, just not sure if the one i bought is small/disproportionate to counter size/next to toaster etc
  • 7 years ago

WOW that blue is wonderful. Yes a counter depth fridge will really make the place feel more fitted. And the stainless mw is a good option. I like the modern hardware pulls that you have. I think the Blue came out really great. Paint really creates a great transformation with a small price.

Boxerpal you were a BIG part of the reason I went ahead with it! Thank you so much!!! I actually LOVE it and dont hate it as I feared i might ❤
As for the microwave, what i was asking is whether i should get a bigger microwave (size of the old white one) or a compact microwave (size of the stainless steel one)? Either way I will be getting stainless steel...i just may exchange the stainless one for a bigger one because it seemed out of proportion to me somehow....looked too small on the counter/next to the toaster which is bigger than my old toaster. idk...Microwave just looks so small!

either size looks fine. Glad the Naval blue looks so pretty.

How do you use your microwave? Do you do a lot of cooking that calls for a larger size, or do you mostly cook or heat up small servings and plates? That is more important than how it looks. I have a smaller m/w that is adequate for how I use it; if it had to sit on the counter (as it used to) I prefer to take up less counter space as well.

I dont use microwave too much. Right now Im just trying to decide which looks best. Both have very similar wattage. I think it stainless one looks too small...maybe because im so used to seeing bigger white one there
  • 7 years ago

Well, on looks alone I like the smaller size because it is in proportion to the upper cabinets.
