Design Dilemma Home Decorating

Suggestions for a northeast facing front room. Feeling indecisive

We have a tall sitting room when you first walk in the front door. It has big windows, but faces north. In the future we are planning to build floor to ceiling bookshelves on the tallest wall. The "oxblood" sofa is new and staying. I am stumped on what color to playing this front room. I could go with a yellow based white or a darker tone. The dining room is through the door, the rooms have to look nice with eachother. I could go dark in front room and light in dining room, or light in front room and dramatic in dining room (south facing) I love earthy tones, olive greens, blush pinks, mcm wood, black and gold with a more neutral wall color. We want a modern or mcm look with the front room feeling like an old school library. I wish I knew more vernacular because I don't know if that makes sense :). Any suggestions?

I think bookshelves would look great, but very difficult to access, even with a library ladder.

While I generally like the idea of a wall of built ins, with all the heat/ac vents and utility items on that tallest wall, built ins could be problematic. Do be careful planning your shelving so you do not to block any of the vents and can reach any switch, etc..

Do you have a family room or great room or separate formal living room -- is this room supposed to be your entry or your living room or is there a living room off this room opposite the entry to the dining room?

If you have another living room, you might consider making this room your entry with a home office nook. What, if anything, is now beneath your stairs and/or do you have rooom on that side of the room to create a home office nook?
