Stuck with a new

couch and custom curtains that I don’t like. Trying to figure out how to make it work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t know how many ways I can tell you you can’t have what you want if your not willing to change some large things in this room to make it work. Please don’t spend any more $$$ unless you are willing to recarpet , and get some new furniture. The overly dark and bright greeting card art will never ever work in this space Kim.

Kim, what I hear is that you are telling us that you will not be recarpeting and you will not be getting a new sofa. And when I see this picture, I think you are willing to work with warm browns, and move away from the bright clear colors in this room. This is the best I have seen your room look yet. On my screen, it looks like the rug ties in the various browns. If you can find art with these colors that is horizontal, I think you'd be done if you removed the drapes. Do you really even need drapes?

Just a couple of examples that you can have brown couches and brown carpet. You can still work around it as long as the rest of the rooms accessories complement each other. No need to recarpet or get new furniture. it Doesn’t make sense to think that brown sofas and brown carpet shouldn’t exist with each other.

I never said brown carpet & brown sofa couldn’t work together. I even posted a pic of Kim’s room with a darker brown sofa! The problem is when the sofa and carpet are the same depth of color brown! If you want to keep the area rug Kim then you can add Darker side tables. Lighter side panels at the windows. I like this ottoman; it doesn’t go so great with your sofas( sigh, ) but looks good with the rug. Seeing as your dog sleeps on it , it might hold up!

I have to say though, that brown on brown look is not very appealing imo!

The top print I love. But have no idea where to get it. It doesn’t tell you where it’s from. So I found the bottom one. Thought the colors were similar. I can tell you don’t like it. But thanks for photoshopping it any way, lyn.

I love all of this. Thanks lyn.

It’s not that I don’t like it Kim, I do. It’s far better than the others. It’s too strong for your room!! I don’t know why you can’t see that???

They had a cream colored rug too. Maybe I’ll try that. I appreciate you still helping me lyn.

If you buy anything; do it with the thought that you will be getting rid of those sofas in a few years!!!!

Lyn. I was jokingly saying I know you don’t like that 2nd print because you said, I guess you can tell I don’t like it.

Now that I can do lyn. And that is a great idea.

Ok maybe your room could be "in the direction of eclectic" ... as I said, your curtains sure have a distinct pattern... but you did like the coral ottoman, and that color goes with your furniture? [and in one photo they were barely brown, but more "light coffee" ?]

The problem is the color of your existing sofas! They don’t work with the color palette you love!!!

I like this one ! Period!

I’m returning this print. I know I need something else. Just thought I’d try it.

For someone who loves color I’m wondering why you didn’t get something like this???

Got yah lyn. And I hear yah.

Thanks partim. In person the room looks better with the newer things. It’s warmer. Before it had a cold feeling.

Lyn. Because everything in the stores is either brown or gray. And I thought that color was more of an accent color.

And yet Kim , look how wonderful it looks in your room!!! Truly a missed opportunity!
My own living room has red Kim!

Etsy.com has for instance this blend with curtains... and a sharp/distinct lined look like the art you posted.... you can do it, I think, w/o buying....

Can you try chalk paint? you have to change the 2 tables, imo.

Lyn what does go with the tone of brown in my sofas? They are a weird color.

I don’t see how strong colors can’t “go” with a beige/brown sofa. Get the art you love and work all of your accessories around the art and forget about the sofas and carpet. Neither will be an issue then. The strong colors will dominate the room and you won’t notice the sofas. On another note, I would never purchase a red sofa. It would only be a matter of time before I’d tire of it and what an expense it would be when you wanted to change your color scheme.

Yes, they are! They are more taupe I think. A muddy color that looks better with softer pastel colors. It clashes with the warmer, strong colors you like unfortunately! It wasn’t such a good choice for you I’m afraid and the style was a bit unfortunate too. I hoe before you purchase next time you at least go to a better store with an in house designer so you can get some help.

Well oaktonmom, a red sofa is certainly not for everyone but it is far more versatile than that strange dark taupe! You would be surprised how easy it is to design around! I have had that red sofa for over 15 years and in two homes. Because it is a primary color it goes with just about anything! Same goes for navy blue!

I wish I could figure out What color would go with the sofas. But they are very dull and I think the strong colors I like will help me like the room better. Covering the carpet has definitely helped. I’m going to do what you said oak and buy the art I like and work around it. And just treat my sofas and carpet as neutrals. And hopefully they fade into the background. And Lyn. I have definitely learned. And will be better prepared for next time. Thanks all. Happy holidays

Try to find a piece of art with more brown tones. Use the brighter colors in another room.

When I was working with my decorator in my own home, before the days when everything was gray, the browns and beiges were where I really needed her help. You asked what color would look good with your sofa. Hard to answer since our on-screen colors may be different. But I looked at the Benjamin Moore site under their browns, and think that it must be somewhere in this section of the browns. They have a red/pink undertone, and the lighter shades are taupes.

If you cllck on the link above, and move along the colors using the arrows at the side, maybe you can tell us which shade is closest to your sofa color. At least then we were be thinking about the same color. Then you can click on the color and it will tell you the shades that go with that color. I clicked on a few that I think are close, and none of them show bright clear colors as ones that look good with that shade.

As your taupe sofas appear to have a slight pink cast to them they seem to like the sage type green , some dirty purple and roses tones. They hate yellow tones though. You say you have learned a lot but are determined to go ahead and buy art you know won’t work! Can you see me shaking my head!!!! I was hoping you were going to use the designer if for no other reason than to reign in your impulse to go out and buy whatever you thought might look good!!!

None of these exercises in futility will mean anything if you don’t come up with a viable plan and stick to it. That is what a professional will do for you Kim! If you can’t do it right away then wait until you can and don’t buy a bunch of stuff you will hate!

The decorator said I need warmth in the room. That’s why I brought in some warmth. Plus I like it. Thanks everyone. But tough crowd.

I also bought blue art. I’ll put it up later and send pics.

Just what you need, another voice. ;-( I have read the posting through and am curious. If you have decided to move your curtains into your bedroom then to me you have a clean slate. Why buy a rug with muted brown colors? Now is your chance to look at a light rug with the colors you love, teal, orange, etc. Bring back your teal lamps and find a fabric for your windows that will coordinate. You have basic brown in your room, use it as a neutral and color up your room. Put a lacquered tray in teal or orange or color you are working with on your ottoman.

You can’t just photoshop a picture over the sofa to see if it’s right. You have to bring all the elements together to see if it works. That means adding window treatments, rug, etc. You need to see the whole picture.

Hi Kim! I commented quite a while ago and see that you are still in a quandary. I am dating myself but found Christopher Lowell’s” Seven RULES for Design” very helpful. Steps 2-4 are your stumbling blocks. Keeping your main pieces of furniture, then work on your flooring, treat your ottoman as an accent piece(5) #4 is window treatment, which I believe you are moving to the bedroom.Don’t get new curtains until you decide if you will be using a throw rug. Your artwork is part of step 5. plants I think is next then lighting is last. Hope this helps, he did amazing transformations, check out his book. Good luck.
