Dark countertops in bathroom - Please Help!

Hi everyone!

So here is the dilemma.

I am using the below marble countertop with the accent wall below. The remaining walls and tile floor will be covered with a polished porcelain tile with a similar color to the accent wall.

My questions are:

1. Does the marble counter go with the accent wall or will it look too much?

2. For my cabinets, should I stain my cabinets or paint them?

3. What color should I do them for both stain or painting them?

FYI: cabinets are white poplar.

It could work. Is the accent wall in the shower? Is the bathroom contemporary with clean lines in the cabinetry, because that tile is very contemporary.

The accent wall will be on one of the walls which has a mirror on it. The cabinets are going to be full overlay (see below style). I keep going back and forth on what I should do regarding the cabinets - stain vs paint and what color? Any ideas or suggestions? :)

That style cabinet is called Shaker. Is the accent tile going on the vanity wall?

Yes, it will go on the vanity wall

I have read that poplar is a paint-grade wood and takes stain unevenly.

In that case the accent wall is acting as a backsplash to the countertop and they do not work together. You need a solid colored countertop and surrounding materials with a strong geometric like that. But if you are buying a Shaker vanity, I wouldn't use that contemporary accent. That tile calls for clean lines in the vanity, like in your photo, so either a slab door in wood or a painted cabinet in a contemporary color, not traditional white Shaker cabinets. Let your home's style guide you in whether to use contemporary or traditional materials.

Ok so these are not the best pictures but it will help give you an idea.

The accent will go on these walls:

The mirrors will be longer and almost go all the way up we are leaving a bit of space for the accent tile on top so it borders the mirror. The accent tile will be on the wall you see with the towel, over the door, connecting to the 2nd vanity.

New cabinets with the shaker full overlay will be installed as well.

Why would you want to accent an awkwardly-angled wall with a door in it by surrounding it in tile? Why call attention to it? Tile will also cut that part of the room off from the rest of the room by treating the walls differently than the others. Keep the walls the same in a bathroom--it's a small room. An accent tile wall should be used when there's a special feature you want to emphasize, like a free-standing tub or behind a vanity in an alcove.

You've also selected contemporary tile when the door and the old vanities and flooring is traditional, meaning your home is an older home with traditional styling.

Shaker is a good choice for your home. Are you changing the floor tile?

Yeah, that is very good point. It all seems to be clashing in my head as well.

I like the 3D tile, and I like your proposed floor tile.

I do not like the dark marble for a bathroom ... it doesn't say "bathroom" to me. I also wouldn't like the dark marble paired with the 3D tile; the 3D tile is a strong element, and it should be allowed to be "the star".

OR ditch the 3D tile and use the dark marble ... but, if you make this choice, keep everything else very simple.

In the photo I see red undertones, so it's a warm floor. Not much different than what you have now. It will read solid on the floor so you can use a busier granite. I don't think it's a good choice with the black counter however. Be sure to take a floor tile with you when you go to look at countertops.

Can we see a photo of the entire room? Is it a full gut?

Unfortunately, I already have the accent tile, floor tile, and cabinets as well. We don't have the counter top finalized yet. I'm thinking we go back and pick something a bit more neutral/white colored counter tops OR see if I can return the accent wall.

Do y'all think the shaker cabinets with the accent will look really weird?

    Yes to the full gut.

Can you see that the accent is a cool gray while the floor is a warm color? At least it is on my screen. That's a very hard combination to pull together.

If you look at the accent wall picture the floor has the warmer 3D tile. That is the color we have in the 3D tile.

That's better than the gray. Would you consider using that tile on the shower walls?

Photos or a drawing of the new layout would be helpful.

Yes, I will try to get pictures later today, It's already in the process of being broken down.

Do you think the cabinets will look strange though? Should I just do away with the dark counter and replace with a lighter color?

I don't think the shaker cabinets will look bad with the tile, It's similar style in this kitchen picture I found below.

Yes, go with a lighter counter or a warm medium-toned counter, not black. I do like the tile with the gray cabinets in that photo but the color mix softens the geometric shape. It's a raised panel cabinet door, not Shaker.

That floor tile will go on the walls too? Where and how high up? You're kind of getting into a "clay box" look with a solid tile on the floor and the walls. It looks like a very large bathroom so it's a lot of tile.

Can you take a photo of the accent tile and the floor tile together?

    Hi Saher Ali-

The color marble and the tile go beautifully together!

    Here is a question though-

    Marble does stain and etch.

Will this bathroom be used to put on beauty/toiletry products on a regular basis?

    Things do spill.

You can use something else that will give you the marble look but that won't have the problems marble does, such as Corian.

    Here is another thought-

I think a slab front cabinet will give you the clean modern look you want much better than the shaker front.

Have a look around the internet and you will see.

Will you be using the tile shown in the photo of the North Perth bathroom on your floor?

    If so, that is great.

The other floor tile you showed looks more in the tan family and doesn't go as well with the grey/black tones of your marble.
