Metal porch railing--wire cables, hog wire?

Does anyone have experience with metal porch railing? How do they hold up over time? What type of maintenance is required? We are building a screened porch and I'd like an alternative to the standard pickets--preferably one that doesn't block the view. I'm currently considering a hog wire or wire cables. The porch is 10-11' above finished grade, so what ever I choose must be structurally sound. Any suggestions for reputable manufactures of either product are also welcome.

A cousin has metal railing with wire cable. It was custom fabricated by a local company.

My brother also has metal railing, but with glass or something similar. I do not know where he sourced his fencing.

I think this is a custom item, vs Home Depot.

Agree about hog fencing - it's inexpensive (compared to house railing options) and structurally sound. It is designed to contain pigs, which are very strong and clever and very good at tampering with/wrecking/wriggling under fences. Should work fine to contain your kids/pets/guests on your deck.

We used Wild Hog Railing on our porch and choose the black coated so they disappear visually as much as possible. The panels are not inexpensive but we didn't compare to wood because that was never on our radar for this. We did not use their track system so I can't speak to that for durability. Ours are pinned to top, bottom rails and posts with no mechanical fasteners so it's a very clean look. I can stand on the openings and they don't budge - my husband's feet don't fit through the openings but they'd hold him too. Very sturdy stuff.

We plant to install hog panel railings on our porches (5' up). There are several ways to build them out. Very sturdy.

If your are interested in cattle/hog fencing panels, Tractor Supply has some panels you maybe interested in.

Cattle panels are attractive and an inexpensive choice, but they are flexible, so they would need to be integrated into solid top/bottom/end railings. Also remember that small children find them to be excellent ladders.

Well...first of all the type of railing depends on the architectural style of your house.

Cattle/hog wire panels certainly are popular and they make a safe, transparent and inexpensive railing, when properly installed and supported.

Perhaps not the best choice, however, if small children will be frequently on the deck since these panels are easy for small children to climb.

Hi there! Here are a few examples of a blackened cable railing project we just finished up! Metal railing can be incredibly durable and can last for decades.

In my area, cable railing is prohibited by code, but I see it all the time. I must be missing something.

Cable railing is one of those features that provokes the form vs. function argument. It looks great, but it can be a safety concern. Small children can use it like a ladder to scale the railing. I suspect this is why it's prohibited by code in Mark's area.

Well...first of all the type of railing depends on the architectural style of your house.

It is a farmhouse, so I thought hog wire would be appropriate for the style. We are on 11 acres and the railing is for the back porch, so no one else can see it. That said, we've already had to make compromises due to tariffs, so I don't want to deviate from the style any more than I have to on the other things. I try to rationalize the changes by telling myself a true farm house would incorporate the materials the farmer had on hand, but I still miss the metal roof. :(

Perhaps not the best choice, however, if small children will be frequently on the deck since these panels are easy for small children to climb.

You and Kudzu bring up an excellent point that hadn't crossed my mind. My youngest is 5-8, so I'll have to think about this.

we are in the exact same boat, but on 2 acres. Our back porch looks out onto chickens and goats. Cattle panel works best for us. I am still sad about no metal roof :(

you know your kids...so obviously take that into account, but every time I thought I had "safety-proofed"" something in my house, my oldest child (my only climber) would figure out some way to scale it. It all came down to deep breaths and LOTS of discussions of safety and respect. I HOPE to this day that child has a climber if he decides to have children!!!! He is the source of most of my grays, lol.

We are using it on the deck of rustic building (brewery in an old wagon shed) that I'm building. Ill try to get a pic up today of it for you.

What about samples, and I am not talking about the railing.

That is my kids too. I think at their current ages if they want to climb they will find a way regardless of the railing. I can see them going to get the ladder themselves and trying to sneak it through the house. Maybe I'll make the porch for adults only. LOL!

Mark, I usually have an idea of where you're headed with the cryptic messages, but I'm not following this one. Can you explain what type of samples your referencing?

@Doc5md, I'd love to see pics if you get a chance to post them!

@Mark: Be careful about drinking and drawing. I think that explains much of Frank Gehry's work.

    Becky,

my experiences are similar to Excalibur product. My experiences with cattle panels have been with cattle. There are retail fence panels which look similar to Excalibur’s but instead of cables, fencing, at my local tractor supply. Both black and Chrome. I have seen fence panels and connectors, not posts.
