How do I inject some personality into my living space?

I'm probably going to replace the sofa and recliner with the Ikea Ektorp sofa and chair in the light beige color because I like the idea of washable slipcovers. My space looks a bit flat. What should I do to inject some color and life? I'm open to all suggestions. Thank you!

How about curtains, bright color runner on table, decorative pillows on couch , add a plant or two.. and some accent color displays on fire place beside the art work, on coffee table.. can be candles, trays, figures, vase , etc , color can match or complement each other.. you have a great neutral bright color scheme on your wall and floor you can do so many options! Enjoy!

It looks flat because it's all brown. Choose another color and spread it around the room. Is that blue in the painting over the fireplace? If so, add blue pillows. Add some life with a live plant(s).

Agreed with Khymm B, curtains add a layer of softness to a room - Bed Bath and Beyond has some good basic and inexpensive options, but I love the linen curtain panels from Pottery Barn, they have a great weave to them and come in some nice colors - if you like blues, there here are some options that might add some personality into your space:

I think changing out the ceiling lights would help. Pick out a different ceiling fan that is prettier/more complementary. If you tend to have the light on a lot, replace with a fan with light. If you tend not to use it, you might want to consider a plain fan. And pick out a lamp for over your table that goes with/complements the fan. Help tie all that ceiling together.

And for sure some softer window dressings.

Hi Khymm B, I found the items online, then hit the 'print screen' button, pasted the image in a paint program (generic program that came with my computer), cropped the image, saved it as a .jpeg, then added the cropped image to my houzz response. ;-)

I agree with you that adding some color would help liven up the living room. I also agree with beesneeds in regards to replacing the ceiling fixture. A small first step could be replacing your two table lamps for lamps in an accent color of your choice. Good luck!

Find a fantastic Oriental rug in warm colors, a painting for over the fireplace that is less generic, a gorgeous chandelier for over the dining table, possibly another rug in the dining area, plants, books, decorative objects on the (glass) coffee table and more art on any walls without windows. I would not put up dark curtains because they will close in your space. Get a warm-colored rug with a pattern and take your color cues from that.

Who's personality do you want to inject? If you wanted to inject mine, you would change out the dining fixture to something really quirky that I fell in love with on first sight. Then build the room around that. But that's my personality and not yours...

So, what do you love? A specific color? An amazing rug? A painting that you can't stop staring at?

Bold interesting artwork (not just generically pleasant matches-the-pillows artwork) will add the life and personality this attractive room is missing.

I don’t know if you have room for drapery so some woven roman shades would warm things up. There are some great textures and colors that would work well in your home. Agree with lighting, and other suggestions. A solid chair-side table beside the recliner would help ground the space. New sofa needs skirted base because too many legs make things look like they are floating in your space. Are you open to moving TV to other side of room? I think doing that could help with grounding your entire furniture arrangement.

If the current sofa is comfortable, would you consider spending the bucks to get it reuphostered or have a custom slipcover made? It has tons of personality! The current color would be okay if you go with the colorful rug suggestions.

It's a lovely room (and cute dog!). Add some texture and color. I'd consider changing out the rug and go larger with the couch front legs on it --a little bolder? Other than the doll house I don't see much family personality. No books, odd little side chairs, etc. I also don't personally love matching lamps.

Paint the fireplace wall a pretty accent color used in the room.
