Schlumbergera Variegated 'Madame Butterfly' blooming!

last modified: 6 years ago

Blooming for me for the first time since I purchased this several years ago.

I was going to say that it doesn't bloom on the shorter leaf section but it is. Just notice more blooms ready to open.

Mike, I may have to resort to two section cuttings due to not much left of my plant. I know it will recover once outside this year.

Hey Stush, please keep me in mind for next spring so that it will give yours time to grow and thrive until then. I can wait. Let it go wild)))

Glad to hear from you. Mine plants are all just about outside now, thank God. Be well)

I was hopping that Mike would comment on rooting these. He gave me advise.

Best way I know is to put in a tall glass with maybe an inch of perlite in the bottom. Set the cuttings on top and keep moist but not wet. Should root in about two weeks then pot up in cactus mix in it's own pot. I have just put cuttings in cactus potting mix and kept moist with a spray bottle. Best when it's warm and outside. My mother plant is looking pretty sad right now. I plan to cut all the way to ground and start over in another pot. Soil looks pretty bad in that old pot. I started another pot last year in case mine would die or something like that.

I’ve always put the cuttings in coarse soil and misted. They root quickly.

Ok so these are my two cuttings I received very graciously from stush2049! Thank you for taking the time to send them!!! Ok first picture is when I received them 4/21/22, the next two are today5/6/2022. I am actually starting to see some tiny roots comin out already. I’m so excited I just may be able to pot them in the next couple of weeks. I am doing the ziplock baggie technique to root. If you aren’t familiar with it, all you do is place your cutting in a ziplock and seal with a tiny bit of air enough to just bubble up a bit. I don’t no if it’s necessary to bubble a bit but that’s how I have been doing it. No water no soil. Place where it gets indirect light. This is 15 days after they came to me.

You might want to pot up soon. Looking good!

Oh that’s even better😉 I can’t wait to get them going!

I potted them up too. Fingers crossed 🤞 they do well now.

@Stush2049 Pitts. PA, zone 6 any chance you have other variegated varieties? looking for "white bell" and "pinkie"

No but looked it up on Google and very few on the market and very high priced. I do have a few all yellow/white leaves started from my Madam Butterfly but not sure if they will be strong enough to survive very long.

P K, you probably know this already but be careful with watering. I just had my well rooted cuttings rot in a pretty well draining mix - back to rooting (now smaller) cuttings....

No worries, these are extras that fell off the parent plant and I am growing them for my mom. I have found that a mix of bark, peat and grit work s really great for them.

The all yellow ones I rooted so far was one section cuttings that I picked up off the floor and was surprised they rooted.

    @stush2049
Once I put my cuttings in the soil my tiny bud fell off. Praying they do well and start showing new growth soon. I will have to be patient for a bloom though.

Buds fall off just moving the plant inside from outside in fall. Buds are very finicky. It would be a huge surprise if it held on and bloomed.

    @Stush2049
I didn’t really expect it to but was really hoping it would stay. Really wanted the bloom 😉.

@Stush2049 Pitts. PA, zone 6 Thanks! I'm trying to collect all the variegated varieties. From what I know there are 6-7 of them. I think the most difficult will be the one that flowers orange

    Yes I do. Looks happy.

My other hanging cactus just bloomed for the first time since a cutting two years ago.

There are a lot of blooms just starting to form along the leaves off the other ones so in another month it should be full of blossoms.

Cool!! @Stush2049 I have a mixed pot of those too. All started as cuttings recently. They probably won’t bloom this year. It will be neat to see when they do though.

Sooo impressed and envious of all your variegated cacti. I wasn't sure they existed or just a mutant. I would offer a trade or donation for a piece if anyone is interested?

Time to bump this up for this season blooms.

Notice how some leaves are all yellow! Know as the curse of variegation. When gone this extreme it weakens so much that that section usually dies back. So far it is healthy. Mike has one that is all yellow with similar flowers and it grows well for him so maybe it is okay. I know I have the hardest time to root one and so far fail.

wow, wow! VMB! I have not seen any for sale anywhere. Are you still sending out clippings of yours? I'm in MA.

Joycelee, Sadly but mine is looking very sad. Not much growth thru this past year. Maybe come spring I am going to re-pot in new soil and see if that helps.

    Hey Stush!

I still have the plant from the cuttings you sent me years ago.

I think its one of the moodiest plants I ever dealt with, I think it does things just to keep me humble. It definitly does not want to be treated like the others.

It is one of my favorites ,thank you again

I'm curious about the Norris variety, is it a Buckleyi ? Are any variegated to be known as Buckleyi?

Purchased as small rooted cutting and I often wondered if it was manipulated somehow with fertilizer. I realize i neglected it on a cold marble window sill behind the curtain. I'm a bad plant parent sometimes.

I would not fertilize these cactus plants. What they really love is warm sunny weather. Mine are just doing fine. Not even close as pictured above.

Bumped up the priority list since I haven't fertilized and it's doubled in size I'm moving him to a better spot. Thanks

Stan, this is not your cutting.

Dawn, I don't know the background of the variegated Norris, but I suspect that it does have some buckleyi. The cladodes are shaped more like buckleyi than truncata, and the flowers are more symetrically shaped than those of truncata.

Thanks for all input. Have you noticed a difference between Norris and M butterfly?

They look quite different from each other. Norris is a bit more upright, M. Butterfly cascades down more. The flowers of Norris are more red, somewhat smaller, and shaped more symetrically than those of Madame Butterfly. The cladodes are shaped more like x buckleyi rather than toothed like those of Madame Butterfly. Both seem to be somewhat touchier to grow than non variegated Schlumbergera.

    Good to know

I never knew that there were varigated buckleyi. off to hunt for another unicorn
