Living Room area rug

The area rug I order just arrived.

It is slightly different than how it looked online.

Should I keep it or look for a different style?

Post pictures from all sides of the room. You will get lots of advice.

Not working. Return it and keep shopping with the chairs in mind.

Sorry, I really like it. Can you provide a link?

The couch and rug look nice together, as do the couch and chairs. What I'm not loving is the chairs with the rug.

kulrn - I agree, it is the chairs. What type of rug should I look for a smaller pattern?

Lil S - What type of rug do you recommend, jute or sisal? then again I think they shed.

Some ideas. Can you post a close up of the chair pattern?

What colors do you have in the room? I see you have a little one (trucks) and I don't know if natural fiber rugs are comfortable for playing on.

Hi Lil S - The room is a blank slate, it is work in progress. At this point we only have the sofa, chairs and coffee table in the room.

My house needs to be family/kid friendly but it is time to have it look like a home instead of empty rooms with seating spread throughout.

I posted a few days ago about purchasing the Ballard Ananda console table for the wall behind the sofa.

It has been a challenge finding pieces to pull this room together.

I adore the rug! The chairs not so much. I would keep the rug and replace the chairs.

The rug doesn't match the chairs, but it blends with and complements them just fine. Keep it and bring in more layers (i.e., a throw pillow for each chair) to add interest. You've already avoided making this space too matchy-matchy, and that's a good thing.

glfjjf...where did you get the rug? I love it:)

Seems cheaper to change the rug vs change the chairs. I agree with IdaClaire though, you can work with the rug if you want to keep it.

Your room is so neutral that it's boring. Find a rug that is more colorful, maybe an Oriental rug, and get colorful pillows and art. Neutral rooms are not "in" now, but they were never that great to begin with. Introduce some green with large plants, get a glass and metal coffee table to make the dark couch look less overbearing, and have some fun with this room.

Hi kulrn - The chairs are too expensive to change and the rug I can return. Sometimes I like my chairs and other times I wish I chose a different fabric...it happens when choosing from a small sample swatch. Any way I am stuck with the chairs for now.

What are you thoughts on rugs similar to the below?

Hi ingrid_vc so. CA zone 9 - I agree the room is boring. It is currently a blank slate with a sofa and two chairs. What color do you recommend introducing? The one color I do not like is blue. I love it in everyone else's house but not mine.

I like the rug. Before returning the rug, I would try adding some darker accent pillows on the chairs and see if that changes anything. From the first photo that you provided, it seems like there is not enough contrast difference between the chairs and the rug. Good luck!

Those rugs are nice. Pricy. Sometimes you can do a search and find the same rug cheaper. Do you think there is too much gray in them? Sometimes you can buy the smallest size and bring home to see it in your space.

Hi kulrn - You are right, I am trying to stay away from gray.

I mentioned in an earlier post I am having a hard time finding pieces to pull this room together. I am tired of looking at this boring LR ;)

I hear you. I have the same problem. Neutral colors. It's hard when color is not your thing! Are there any colors you don't like?

kulrn - Thank you for the above.

Blue is not my color. I love it in other homes and magazines but not for my house.

I like the rugs in the bottom two pictures :)

Well...a rug like Ingrid describes will kick you right out of boring...

I think your rug looks good with your furniture. You just need to bring in a color or two with some nice, full pillows.
I think your rug needs to have a little dark brown to tie in the couch color ....with small kids ....a soft wool ...patterned....not to light color...will be most practical...also without seeing the rest of the space it looks like the rug could be smaller...so the furniture can be pulled in to a slightly cozier grouping where furniture colors are tied together better by the rug as well
  • 6 years ago
Side tables for couch and chairs are pretty important as well...if you just pull the chairs further onto the rug with side tables...this will move toward a more cohesive grouping,as well
