Dinning room furniture dilema!!!

Hey guys!

I'm waiting for opinion on my dinning room. I've posted 3 photos 3 days ago. I really need your help.

I know the color is outdated but condition is like new. Will it make a difference if I change light fixture and place a rug under table? Maybe hang new pictures on a wall?

Light fixture a little high and small for the table. Appears a little dark so maybe change out the picture for a nice big mirror.

Remove china cabinet and replace with a sideboard and new light fixture, rug and art will help.

A new, larger, more contemporary or transitional light fixture, along with new, larger artwork would make a world of difference!

I don't think you need a rug but you might reupholster your chairs for an easy update.

If the furniture is in "like new" condition, I'm going to assume this dining room is used a couple of times a year. Do you think you might find a better use for the room?

Larger art. No mirror in a dining room.
Larger and lower light fixture will give more light because it will have more light bulbs.
An area rug would have to be wall-to-wall to give you enough room for moving chairs easily when sitting down or rising from the table. A rug could add color to the room.
The room needs color, and the best place for color (if you don't add a rug) is to have the chair seats redone in a fabric with good color or colors. I like a multi-color patterned fabric on dining room chairs.
The china cabinet can be updated if you use wallpaper or fabric to cover the wall behind the shelves.

The china cabinet is too flat, you can buy some colored plates or even all white to pop in there, or if you have things in the house. The glass is lost because the back of the cabinet is mirrored, it appears empty. You can also use shelf liner to cover the mirror in the back to give it a new look.

Yes to replacing the art with something larger and less heavy for the space.

Yes to recovering the chairs. or maybe even slip cover them.

I dont think you need a rug

Yes the light fixture NEEDS to be changed. Its dating the space more than the table.

Your set will look best if the walls are a darker backdrop for the set. So far all the paint colors are too light.

I would paint the furniture white...make it fresher...crisper...brighten up the room...

The color of the furniture is what dates it...the style will look more retro in a bright white ...less drab and out of date....

I like Beverly's suggestion of painting the walls. Here's a mock-up with a bold wall color for you.

I like the idea of printed fabric on the chairs, too.

The comment about re-purposing the room is also worth thinking about...if you use this space rarely and have another dining area that will suffice ...changing this room to something you will use all the time is worth considering

No matter what color the walls are the white trim and ceiling will always make the dining set look drab

I would also paint the furniture white and add an area rug under table. Neutrals are classic and don't go out of style.

Agree with the set looking a bit drab in contrast to your white trim and door. Perhaps painting those more of a swiss coffee color (MUCH easier than painting your dining set), and brightening your lighting will help to downplay the creaminess of the furniture so it won't read as drab.

I've warmed up the trim, and brightened up the furniture a bit here:

Changing the trim ...and walls...won’t be much less work than painting the furniture..and you will still have the sort of drab dated dining set...depends on whether you want a fresher look...there have been a lot of good suggestions ...guess we just wait to get some feedback from EWA...

Huge thank you for all your responses. One thing for sure I have to have dinning room for "special occasions". I'm adding one more picture of my living room. Question. Do those 2 rooms go together?

Wow this really highlights the off color of the dining set...is painting at all an option for you?...
    E KOCAJ thanked btydrvn

Since the table and cabinet are layered one in front of the other may be more interesting to paint the cabinet to match the wall and the table several shades lighter...this will draw the eye into the room and give the appearance of a much more expansive space....as is ...the color stops the eye and cuts up the space...

The new vintage chic element of painting this set .....would also be enhanced by removing the mirror in the back of the cabinet perhaps the whole back so that the wall shows through...wondering if you are in Florida...they have many beautiful galleries of this painted furniture idea...to modernize and freshen these pieces

Painting the furniture is a lot more work than painting the walls, and I don’t think the slightly dated design will improve much. I’d go with an eggplant color for the walls, which would offset the creamy white of the furniture. Looking at your decor in the living room, a muted darker blue might tie in nicely, as well, offset with some bright colored art or accents.

Remove the breakfront. It may be in good condition, but it dates the space.

    Replace the chandelier.

Then think Scandinavian design. (No need for the seat covers).

    I love your chairs.

Thanks again for all your suggestions. I don't think I'll paint furniture. To much work and money. I could paint walls. Although I painted them recently. Haha someone at Benjamin Moore store said, to go with this color. Now I'm very confused. I my have no choice but sell it and buy something new. Looks like no matter what I do I'm gone have outdated furniture.

I think the chairs are making your room too busy...Could you find more streamlined ones? Painted walls like pictured, and art work. Breakfront is too big...buffet would be better...but if using the breakfront, I would paint back of shelves to coordinate with artwork. A colorful centerpiece and a new chandi and you will have a nice room. Yes it goes with your living room.

Thank you erinsean for your advice. My china cabinet is 2 pieces. I could remove top part and live bottom as a buffet. Bottom height is 32".Will that work?

It's likely your base cabinet has no top. So you'd have to spend money to create or purchase a stone top. No sense spending that money

BTW blue on the wall only works to make the finish on the set more PINK!!!

Should I change cabinet handles? The are gold.

The room is impersonal. i recommend spicing it up. the light fixture is dated, I recommend finding a modern fun fixture. I would hang new art, find a local gallery and buy something with personality. a sisal rug would be nice, andmput something like an art glass bowl or hip sculpture on the table. it just needs to be less generic.

Love the living room, the dining room looks tired next to that chic living room. maybe bring in some of that subtle blue from the living room into the dining room, with artwork and chair covers. the color of the dining room furniture is the real problem, it is just off. it may be worth updating to a more modern look.

No, your two rooms (modern contemporary and Queen Anne) don't go together. Which of the two do you prefer? Personally, I'd stick with the LR and ditch the DR furniture for a new, more modern style that works with the LR.

I agree with you decoenthusiaste that those two rooms don't go together. I will change my DR furniture finally. I saw some furniture already. Now I need to choose something. I really appreciate your honesty. Thank you.

I will post some pictures when I have my new room put together. It will take awhile because I have to order everything and try to sell what I have now.

I never thought choosing furniture would be so difficult. I'm almost done. Now I have to choose from those two. I would like yours opinions. One more question regarding sideboard. What size to order? 74 wide or 55. Wall where is china is 93 inches wide.

I prefer table with straight legs and longer sideboard. It seems more timeless.

Hahaha, and here I would not throw out and change anything , I would try painting all the chairs and rest of furniture black . Get a big mirror on the left wall and a wonderful chandelier ...over the table and make it into a cozy/ dramatic dining room .....that is , before I throw it all out ! You might be surprised on how wonderful it will look ...and yes , a light rug under the dining table .......
