Go for some off white linen drapes to add a little bit of brightness to the room. Hang a few inches below the ceiling.

Another option to consider could be Hunter Douglas Silhouette shades. They combine colored vanes as well as sheers so that light is softly filtered into the room. They give a very clean look to windows, while giving you the flexibility to open and close the vanes based on how much privacy is needed. A shade fabric color like “feathered down” would give you that pop of greyish brown when the vanes are closed. A tailored fabric valance could be layered on top of the shades if you want to add in a little pattern.

Shutters are great but you can add flair to your window by adding some drapes like this:
