Outlet covers. To paint or not to paint, that is the question...

If you have dark walls do you paint outlet covers to match ?

Or not?

I do. And I put in dark switches or receptacles too. But there's no correct answer. I just prefer to minimize the contrast.

So you paint the switches? How do they hold up?

HI! Have done it in the past on the covers. Last house in the bathroom I painted them. Then it had wear from like fingernails. Repainted and added a coat of water poly. Yes shiny-er but better than scratches. You can buy ones that are paint ready fyi. I have seen folks paint the actual plug too (previous owner did it here in the bathroom). As for paint the switch - never seen that - and doubt it would last long. You can swap switches out -you can find black and brown.. or maybe change the cover of a rocker switch- https://www.discounthomeautomation.com/HAI-Leviton-Color-Change-Kit-for-UPB-Switch-LV35A14?color=49&gclid=CjwKCAjw39reBRBJEiwAO1m0OcQge-rSfLkT4k-qMfMvgzP3JDo39rCpvigsdd56jKGayZt_q-4OsRoCCfAQAvD_BwE

No, I have used either black, brown, or Lutron Satin colors in various shades to blend in with wall colors. Pass and Seymour also makes a limited number of "metallic" (satin brass or satin chrome finish plastic switches and receptacles). I do not paint switches. I have sometimes painted receptacles, because they get less use.

You could try something like this. It’s an entire plate that fits over your existing outlet, so the whole thing is paintable to match your wall. I obviously haven’t painted mine yet; I wanted to test if they’d work okay over my outlets or not first. They’re called decorator plates & I picked them up at Lowe’s or Home Depot for around $2 or so. Here’s a link to something similar: https://www.lowes.com/pd/TayMac-Revive-1-Gang-White-Single-Decorator-Wall-Plate/50427070

So for those that say they paint... do you cover just the frame and leave the actual outlet white? I’m thinking that would look odd too.

‘Or do you paint and just touch it up when it gets chipped off due to use?

im considering ordering navy outlets BUT I suspect if they don’t match well I will be disappointed.

I would use a spray paint made for plastic on the frame, or use the wallpaper backed clear frame.

Painting the actual electrical outlets is a mess, because a light color paint gets black scratches from plugs being pushed in. They are also pretty much impossible to remove paint from later.

I would not get navy or black outlets. They will never "match" exactly. People are so used to white or beige outlets that they will notice them once and then never again as their eyes look at more interesting things.

I don't like the outlets painted. They did that in the house I'm in now and I'm still replacing switches where paint chipped off with use over the years. I think it looks bad and completely unnecessary. I like white, stainless or decorative covers with the toggle switch left alone. I have some pretty ceramic covers that go good in my house.

Yes I prime and paint my outlet covers and air vents the color of the wall. My backsplash is beadboard and we have an overkill amount of outlets there so I used these full face plate ones. Bought mine at Home Depot for less.

Personally I would leave them white so they can be seen easily. If you must paint, I agree with the person who said spray paint for plastic. Durability will be important. However, you'll have to block the outlet slots with something to keep the paint out.

ok, so i see you are talking only about the covers. makes it easier.

Painting the actual switches etc just doesn't work for long, Covers, I paint to match woodwork.
