Kitchen Reveal - DIY Traditional Kitchen (Seven Months in the Making!)

We started this project in April, when my husband symbolically wrapped and gave me a sledge hammer as an Anniversary gift. It's not 100% done. We still have some trim to do and plan to paint the window area to match the kitchen--but it's a fully functional kitchen again, which is good enough for me! We did everything ourselves, with the exception of the countertop and backsplash installation. By "we" I mostly mean my husband--I just kept our one year old from killing himself on power tools, and began "building" baby # 2, though I did do some heavy lifting and painting during naptime.

The project involved moving our powder room from the center of the house (essentially where the peninsula sits now--that window was in the bathroom) to the side of the house where the kitchen table was located. We eat in the dining room, so the loss of space was worth it to open the kitchen up to the den. We had to install a beam to support a shear wall in the floor above. We also had to move the floor threshold over a few feet to feather in flooring. This required us to painstakingly pull up a huge patch of flooring to save as many boards as possible, then mix those in with the closely matched new flooring. We also kept the dentil moulding we pulled off of the den wall to save as much as possible, which is how we created the details around the basement door.

There are SO many details involved in planning a kitchen. We did our best, and I'm sure we could have done better in some areas, but I love the end result. There were tons of tiny decisions to make--luckily I like that kind of thing. My husband was so awesome at planning 10 steps ahead to make sure we're considering everything. It was hard, but I'm happy we don't have to do it again for another 20 years (I hope!).

Wow that's amazing! You guys should be very proud. Moving a powder room alone is a big project. Looks gorgeous.

Congratulations! It looks beautiful and functional! And you did most of the work yourselves?! Wow, wow, wow! I'm impressed. I love your counters (we have honed Steel Gray granite, similar look). And your view to your backyard is amazing!

Wonder what your DH will give you next year for your anniversary, lol!

This is an excellent example of why you need at least some up-facing light. The pot lights provide brightness in a gloomy surround.

This is AMAZING!!! Truly beautiful kitchen and what a labor of love. I'd love to see some pictures of your floors. We'll have to do something similar and I'd love to see/hear how feathering in old floors worked out.

Wow! You guys are amazingly talented! Just one question...do you plan an removing the dental molding above the door and window? It looks odd. I realize its probably the original.

Looks beautiful! We have the same layout with sink wall and peninsular. We, have a similar photo of rebuilding the back of the house (we got rid of french doors in favor of a window) but we did NOT have to deal with a powder room. Ours was 9 months, start to 90% finished, and we were both working on it. i have a few more things to finish before I’m ready to post.

Very impressed with your 7 month job!

Looks great! Can I ask what you spent? Many people don’t know actual costs in kitchen remodels, so it would be helpful if you shared
  • 7 years ago

lisa_a I think next year I'm probably not getting anything for our Anniversary, though I'm getting him a baby, ha! I feel like the pictures don't even fully capture how nice the counters are. So far we love them, but I'm still not used to having counters so I'm scared to use them.

jbtanyderi Yes, my husband did an awesome job planning the lighting. Our house is surrounded by woods so it can be pretty dim at times--though I guess it's a little misleading because it's nighttime in the pictures and we had the lights in the other rooms off.

rantontoo Thank you! It is amazing how much bigger the rooms feel with that bathroom gone. When it was all emptied, we wondered if we'd made a mistake and made it too big, but I don't think so now.

    blondelle They were our inspurration!

You have designed and built a beautiful kitchen. Obviously, you two are very talented and capable DIYers. Kudos!!

The only thing I would change are the cats on the counter...
Eeeuuuu! That is the reason I don't have cats...I would be constantly cleaning the kitchen counters.

cmbpmb We got lucky with the flooring because the original owners had gotten the builder basic prefinished red oak hardwood. I was able to find a very close match at Floor & Decor, which is honestly probably the same flooring but each batch is slightly different. The new boards are a little redder and slightly duller, but you really don't notice it overall unless it's pointed out to you. We had to move the threshold you see below basically from the right side of the basement door (where the wall originally was) to the left side of the door. If we had left the threshold in its original spot, it would have been about 1 foot in front of the peninsula across the whole kitchen floor. Not cool.

My husband measured where the peninsula would go so we knew where the threshold needed to be, and face nailed it. Then, we feathered out a big patch so that the edges would all blend (so we had to take a bigger patch out than what we really needed to). Each first piece was feathered in and face nailed, then we were able to tack in the rest normally. We used woodfiller and touchup pens on all the facenail holes and any irregular gaps from refitting the boards. The last piece on either side of the threshold had to be cut exactly to size. That part was tough, but I think he did a great job. We were also dealing with a slope in the floor.

There's a big patch under the peninsula without flooring. We had bought one box of new flooring and saved as much as we could from the original floor, and also had a few pieces of new flooring leftover from when we did the same process to build a new master closet. I think we ended with about three boards leftover. It was nerve-wracking, but he did such a good job. I think the end result looks like we didn't do anything, which is frustrating 'cause it was a lot of hard work, but ultimately that's what we were going for.

Here you can see the slight variation in finish. That duller board is a piece of new flooring.

schnable1 That was a huge controversy during planning. We were going back and forth on whether to have a landing space next to the oven or not. I really hate little small slivers of countertop. I think all they do is collect clutter. For me, the look of full pantries was worth the trade-off. I haven't used the oven yet, but we "played" kitchen a lot during planning so I practiced walking from the oven to the peninsula and it isn't bad.

townlakecakes Aside from planning plumbing, the powder room was pretty easy. We've already done two full bathrooms so a half bath was a piece of cake. I'm excited to see your finished product!

lhutch13 The cabinets were $14000, the countertops were $2700. Appliance came out around $5000, probably a little less. The backsplash was about $700 for tile and installation. I did a LOT of shopping around and sale-hunting. Aside from that, the rest was smaller expenses like the individual elements and materials.

We saved a TON in labor. To run new electrical for the oven and cooktop alone we were quoted $1000. That's not even including all the wiring my husband did to hide the outlets on the backsplash and install the undercabinet lighting. To refinish the ceiling we were quoted $1100, then we decided to do the drywall ourselves and get a quote just to tape and mud, $987, ha! I would get a quote and my husband would say it isn't worth it so he'd do it.

bgs990 We are keeping the dentil moulding. It is original and I quite like it! It goes around the whole den, so maybe it doesn't look awkward when you see the whole room with it, not just in the picture at the edge of the kitchen.

Thank you! Many think to get a kitchen like this you need to spend 60k. Although you did save on labor. That’s a great price for your countertops. Well done!

Thank you! My husband would like to know that it looks like a $60k kitchen. Who knows, maybe the price we spent on fast food for the past five months could have just been the price of labor instead.

Our whole kitchen needed to be rewired...we had GFIs that tripped with no change in load, not Even close to enough power in the kitchen, and no room in the panel to add a circuit, so we hired an electrician. We also hired drywall so we could get it done quickly and start rebuilding. We got it to usable by my daughter‘s 6th birthday in November last year and it was September this before we started working on it again. It’s really only trim that’s left but with holidays and birthdays and my brother‘s recent wedding, there’s not tons of time to work on it!

Heres a quick photo of the main elevation. We don’t have a ”before” that still has the peninsula w cooktop and upper cabinets because we had to get rid of it to fit the new appliance we bought in the Black Friday sale. You can see where It was by the patched vinyl on the floor

Oh by the way, with new panel, circuits, loads of recessed lights in the kitchen and dining room, we spent around $7000 on the electrician. It was our single biggest expense. We only spent $6000 on cabinets.

townlakecakes Your kitchen is lovely! The layout is exactly the same as ours! What is the flooring? It definitely sounds like we saved a lot on the electrical. I think what got us with the price of our cabinets was all the tall pantries.

felizlady It's so strange, they didn't jump on the counters before--I guess even they think this kitchen is nicer than the old one!

abbycat9990 No current plans for a rolling cart or anything. It's just a few steps from the oven to the peninsula. With our options between the oven, stove, and fridge, I liked this layout the best--even knowing we were losing a countertop next to the fridge and oven. I don't think I'll mind it. Ask me again in a few years and we'll see if that changes.

One of the cats is obsessed with the counters and cooktop. We're having to keep it locked until she learns not to jump up there.

felizlady You would not like my house! Cats run our world, and refuse to be deterred from any surface. A rare moment of unity among our three:

Keiko, our floor is Marmoleum in Lapis Lazuli. It was just about the only thing in the kitchen we didn’t compromise on. The espresso machine was the other. We had a quote on cabinets of over $12k. We found some pre-assembled RTA from a guy on Craigslist and opted for the 50% savings. Lumber amd plumbing cost us so much more than we expected that it’s a good thing we made that choice.

We raised the ceiling, and we’re on a slab so all our utilities are in the ceiling. We had to run new water supply lines, move the upstairs bathroom waste line into the ceiling, reconfigure hvac, and we reframed 3 of the 4 walls, all of which are load bearing. And of course we had to do the siding too. So we saved a lot of labor doing all that ourselves, but we didn’t have the time or expertise to do the electric ourselves, and the new panel had to be done by a master electrician anyway. I also did the plans on chief architect.

I obsessed over the details and my husband was always thinking 10 steps ahead to anticipate issues too. It was a good partnership

townlakecakes Your project does sound very similar in scope to ours, as well as your partnership. We were a good team on this, with one always keeping the other one in check. I love your marmoleum--it was worth it! We got lucky (?) because one of our cabinets was delivered damaged so we had to wait two weeks for the replacement. In that time, we worked on all the little things like paint, trim, outlets, that it's hard to find time or passion to do once you get so far into a project.

Mariana Marec This is the closest picture I have zoomed in. The tile is really lovely. It almost resembles a glass tile at times but it's ceramic.
