Help to find blue paint to accent gold vanity

Our guest bathroom is 1981 all the way! We will renovate in the future but have other projects first (including master bath) so we’ll live with it probably for another 2 years. But the gold is just too much. It’s on the walls and vanity! We call it ‘baby poop gold’:)

Im not into gold but always thought blue & gold looked ok together. So I’m thinking of painting the walls a medium or dark blue. Any thoughts on if that’s a good idea? And any suggestions on color? Would navy be too dark? A slate grey-blue perhaps? Any specific color suggestions?

Thanks for your help!!

I see that your shower surround has black trim, or at least it looks black. Would you consider painting the vanity black? And I don't see any pulls or handles on the vanity. If you paint it and add some handles, that would change the look quite a bit. Maybe some brass colour handles to make it look and feel a bit luxe?

Then for a wall paint I think I'd find a warm ivory colour, moving away from gold, but still tying to your floor tile colour.

It is hard to tell your floor tile colour - I'm wondering if a colour like BM HC27 - Monterey White might work. I think it would play well with the black and also with the tile colour. Or maybe AF20 - Mascarpone

I know, not the blue you were talking about. What do you think?

benjamin moore green tint, colorado gray, galaxy. abalone. I would consider painting the vanity a Java color.

Mvcanada, thanks! I like the idea. The shower trim is dark brown (almost black). The floor is linoleum...beigey/gold. I could paint the vanity..I originally wanted to do that but then thought I’d rather paint the walls and was trying to keep work to a minimum. We are renovating our entire house..and have a million projects going on! Anyone know how much work involved with painting a vanity like this? 54”. Thx!! Here are more pics. PS: we have new white 2 paneled doors now! Much better than gold slab doors.

I don't think painting the vanity is a big job. I hear you about having a lot of jobs on the go and it can become overwhelming.

Take the drawers and doors off and paint them outside or in the garage, where you can lay them out.

Look for a paint that is made for bathrooms and that has a self levelling finish, so that you aren't left with roller or brush marks.

Tape off the floor and edges against the walls and go to it. If you can use a small roller, it gives a nicer finish than a paint brush.

You might need to give it all a light sanding before starting, or at least clean it with some water and TSP, to remove any dirt of oil before starting.

If you are going black, then you'll need to choose a different rug and unless you need the long length, I'd look for a smaller one for just in front of the vanity or stepping out of the tub.

And I see you have a piece of art on the wall with a black frame. That can stay and will look good pulling the black in a bit more.

What do you think of this pull? This one might be a bit too large, but I'm thinking some thing rich looking would add quite a bit to the vanity to make it look less 80s.

I think the blue works as a quick win but painting the vanity will give you more bang/impact than just the walls. It’s not that difficult or time consuming and will make a big difference in the space. I did it in our guest bath for the same reasons as you and with relatively the same color pallet and it gave the space a whole new look to the point where I was asked if the vanity was new. I lightly sanded and primed then used 2 coats of general finishes milk paint with an acrylic poly over it. Super easy and worth every minute.

Adding some hardware to the vanity will make a big difference too!

Not the **best** representation, but a quick idea of what it might look like if painted black (or dark)

HU-451779770, I like it! I’ll try but I’ll paint the walls first. If I were to plan to paint the vanity black, what color blue would work on walls?

Any suggestions for paint colors, anyone? I’m afraid to go too dark although I think it would look good. Help! :) Thx!

Yes, do the walls first and see how you like it. I think the black could still work, but you could also go white on the vanity and maybe do a frame around the mirror in black to echo the frame around the tub. Some inspiration photos.... the last one is what made me think a white vanity may work even better than black if you want to stay with the dark blue on the walls - which I personally like.

your main problem is the florescent lighting. it's going to skew any color you choose, as nothing will look like the paint chip when you get it home. You have a horrible green/yellow hue. I sure hope you don't do your makeup in there!

at the very least, can you redo the light issue? it isn't that difficult or expensive to do yourself.

HU-451779770, love the photos! I’ve been looking too and really like the dark blue. A white vanity would work too!

Beth H, yes, I totally agree. The lighting is awful, as is everything... the floor, shower, paint, vanity, etc.. but we will do a full gut in a year or 2. So no change to lighting for now. Paint color is only temporary anyway. I just can’t handle the baby poop gold anymore!

So any suggestions would be helpful! Thx!!!

then I wouldn't pick a color with a yellow or green base. find something in the blue like you want and try it. bring home samples to try on the walls because nothing will end up looking like the paint chip.

Thanks Beth! Would a navy be ok with the lighting? And potentially with a black vanity? Or should I go with a medium blue?

There is a regular light fixture in there too so that helps tone down the florescent.

    Thanks!

Oooh, I’m liking Van Deusen Blue by BM! Not as dark as many of the navys, but still dark & rich.

navy and a black? no. It's going to suck up all the light! I like this, but you need some lighter elements. maybe if you could do a white floor ? you can paint vinyl or tile

how about a black vanity, that one wall black (window wall) and white (a blue based white) everywhere else?

or do a dark blue vanity and gray/blue walls.

blue vanity and light blue. ( this was a design challenge w/a builder basic oak bathroom. everything you see was redone for under 1K. including flooring)

what if you guys removed that light, took out the fixture, quickly patched and painted and replace w/something similar to this? or even an LED light bar? shouldn't take more than an hour and would really change the overall look. anything is better than what you have! For two more years!

VanDeusen is a very nice blue. I've used it. it can be a little on the dark side.

Beth, that is a great suggestion! My husband will probably think I’m crazy but I can probably do most of it.. but will leave the electrical to him. ;) Thank you!! I may just have to try that.

Houzz is so amazing...you guys are all so helpful.

So do you like other colors you think I should try? I may get a sample of Van Deusen but could try a few.

    Thx!!
