Am I asking the right people to do a fireplace remodel???

I want to replace our current gas fireplace with a bigger, direct vent unit as well as give it a new mantel and surround. I know approximately what size and style of both I am looking for as well. I figured the best place to start this project was with a local fireplace retailer and work with a contractor they suggest. Unfortunately, both of the local retailers that had decent reviews scheduled appointments to come and view the project and then were complete no shows.

After that, I contacted a couple of remodelers with decent reviews, but they both told me that they don’t typically do fireplace projects and suggested I contact a fireplace retailer.

I finally found a general contractor who viewed the project to provide an estimate, and he told me that since I knew what I wanted (i.e. type of fireplace and mantel/surround), I would be better off just buying them on the internet and using someone the online retailer suggests to install them. While that would be a fine idea to me, this left me a little confused because A) I feel like there would need to be some demo/reframing for a larger fireplace and B) I would like some confirmation that the project will work with the size of fireplace/surround/mantel I want before I buy them on the internet. It would also be nice if there was a main point person coordinating all of the work.

Anyway, all of this is to say that I feel rather stumped as I can’t seem to find anyone to do this project. I’ve tried fireplace retailers, remodelers and general contractors (another one said he didn’t do fireplaces either). Am I asking the right people to do this project? Any suggestions of what I could try next?

Thank you!
