First Hard Freeze?

I think we may have set a record for earliest "hard" freeze last night (29F or under) when it dropped down to 21 degrees. I had just been complaining to a gardening friend of mine about the hot 90+ degree temperatures we had in October when, phewst, mother nature puts an end to the warm weather complaint..........Anyway, just curious about the rest of the nations temperatures. Have you all gone into winter mode yet?....................Maryl

Wow, Maryl…..I didn't realize it could dip so low where you are. I guess that must be a shock after 90 degrees so recently!

In the mountains, it has already snowed a couple times. We had snow overnight but it has melted. Temps are in the 20's and 30's at night, high 30's and 40's days. We have had a lot of rain lately. After another dry summer with drought conditions I don't complain. It is wonderful to get so much precipitation as my plants go into the deep slumber. Hubby isn't happy because he hasn't been able to do the dreaded annual leaf cleanup and worries the leaves will never dry up enough to get them raked up and shredded. Once the snow settles on them they will be held hostage till spring....encased in ice and buried. And because of my injury I can't do any cutting down of the perennials and tidying up the beds. It will be a very busy spring by the looks of it.

Yes, we have had a hard freeze and snow. Too early for this. We set a record 13* for this date. So sad to see my daylilies limp and snow on them. I know it's winter but too early.

Temps got into the teens last night, wind chill had it close to zero. Had snow Thursday night, the snow melted or evaporated today. It’s much too early for this nonsense ; )

Our overnight low last night was 27, and it's supposed to be even lower tonight. Snow is in our forecast for Tuesday. We only had a couple of weeks of fall.

Ours in central KY is similar to Debra's.

The norther is due to arrive in Austin, Tx on Monday morning, bringing wind and rain that day. The first freeze in Austin may occur Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Every local station is giving a slightly different forecast. The lowest temperature given was 30ºF. I live about 25 miles west of Austin and I expect a freeze both mornings.

Definitely sounds as if the Begonias are history for many people. I looked at my tender perennials in the garden and they are blackened and dead. I got all my small pots of daylilies into the garage just in time.....Celeste and Sherry: Every year my prayer is the same: Please no ice or snow. Don't even want to hear those words. As rotten as our summers are I'd rather suffer with the inferno heat then deal with Ice or snow on the roads...............Maryl

Saturday we had another snow event blow through with winds so high it made it impossible to see out the windows sometimes. Lake effect snow creates white outs here. We typically get a hard freeze later in November and so far, it hasn't gotten to that point yet. We did dip down to mid 20's Friday into Saturday and the windchill made it feel much colder. Sunny today, low 40's and snow is melting fast. Weather forecast is calling for a possible storm on Tuesday into Wednesday and depending on the track we could get snow or rain. Hope it is rain. Some coneflowers and blanket flowers are still blooming.

Hard freeze the last 2 nights here too, got down to 23 last night. Not bad outside today though. Been busy and not able to get mulched til today. A little late, but got a lot done today.

The temperatures are like late December. October temperatures (after the 11th) were like November. I hope it is not too wet, as the constant freeze/thaw will wreak havoc. What will winter bring??? This year, we had the most days with a temperature of 80 and above; the most daily lows of 65 and above. Hottest May on record. Fourth coldest April on record. Close to the wettest September on record.

I may have to pray a little harder for no snow/ice. We are due snow tomorrow. I'd like to say this is unusual for Oklahoma, but I remember a couple of decades ago getting snow in mid October. Ruined all the rose blooms that had just been produced after the summer heat...........Mantis: April was cold and very windy here too. Blew a rock into my glasses as I was potting daylilies and broke them. Thank Goodness for the protection of eye wear........Kay: I'd so love a greenhouse to overwinter pots in. I'm glad you got all yours in on time.......Julia: It worries me when the snow is wrapped in blizzard winds. I got caught out in that once and I still have PTSD from it. I literally thought I would die......Mindshift: Interesting the temperatures in Austin. 8B is a fairly warm zone over winter I'd think............. Maryl

We had our first freeze here in Dodge City Oct 20th at 26 degrees, also first snow 3 inches. I will never get my yard cleaned up this year. Just had another snow last nite, looks to be another 3 inches.

Hard freeze some time back. Some snow, but it's melted off now. Now it seems to be settled into 30's during the days and 20's, possibly teens soon, at night. Probably about typical for us this time of year. Actually, I was thinking that it had held off longer than usual. Interesting reading what everyone else is experiencing.

That winter storm is coming here after it hits you, Julia. Already parts of northern NH have a foot of snow already but this will be widespread over the whole state. Snow/winter is coming whether we're ready or not. Plus, it is frigid out there! Last night with the wind chills it was in the single digits. Everything in the yard is frozen solid, including the bird bath I forgot to move into the shed. The poor birds landed on an ice skating rink this morning....lol.

Cold here, too, but not under the 20's, I don't think. Snowing as I type and we have an accumulation of more than an inch.

I will show my age when I say, Alex, your “snowing as I type” line reminds me of a similar line in the old “Christmas in Connecticut“ movie! (Which I love!)

We had a snow here yesterday-the first time since 1958 it has snowed on this date. Of course it was just a little and totally gone today but kids out got early from school due to ice on roads and bridges. i do wonder what this means for the rest of winter.

Kate, we had flurries yesterday, and as cold as it has been, for a sustained period of time now, I wonder too. OH it hasn't stayed below freezing all the time yet, but normally we are in the 60s in daytime, and we have been 40s. not typical.

Back from a road trip - through the snow, I might add! Anyway, there were 3" here, but it's sort of slushy since it's been a bit warmer, low winds. Brief respite.

I think, Kate and Kay, what it means is that this may be a heck of a winter, but hope I'm proved wrong. The good side is, our season was longer, so less time for the bad stuff. For some reason, I'm not feeling like Spring will be delayed. Alex - Weather Person. ;)

Forgot to add that I like old Christmas movies, but don't think I own Christmas in Connecticut. This googled it; thought that was Barbara Stanwyck. Will have to check it out!

I'll be waiting for snow reports after this big front moves through. Looks to be a doozy up north on the map, but you never know......... Today it was 67 degrees after bottoming out at 20 degrees Wednesday night. I looked at some of my potted daylilies in their protected overwintering spot and it looked like they had been shocked by the freeze. The foliage had still been mostly full and lush when our first hard freeze hit so suddenly. May be some dead daylilies next spring..........Maryl
