Long living room dining room layout help!

We are finally ready to furnish and decorate our long living room but we are not sure of what the right layout would be. The couch we are getting rid of and buying new furniture, the tv stand may stay or go depending on layout and where the tv ends up being placed. We would like to put a dining table at the other end of the room but we are unsure of size and shape. The ceiling fan hanging will also be replaced. Thinking of keeping a couch along the windows, we want to optimize seating for when we have friends and family over. The fire place is also off center so a couch on the window side seems to work better, but open to any ideas! Overall Dimensions are Length 23 ft. 4 in. Width 13 ft 7 in. Thank you!!!

Hello Jayne, What a fun space! Here are a few of my thoughts:

For the dining space, I would stick with a small, rectangular table. Because you have a doorway to the porch near the dining area and you want room to walk around easily, I would aim for something not larger than 60" long by 36" wide, but you can double check that in the space.

As for the seating area, if you want to maximize seating, I might aim for a couch with one or two chairs along the wall with the window. I notice when I have guests, everyone chooses a chair. Not everyone wants to snuggle up next to someone they don't know very well on a sectional. It is also easier to rearrange if you decide to change up the layout.

If you want to have even more options for seating, it might also be nice to do one or more ottomans that are cushioned and could be used for feet or as additional seating for guests. They could be grouped together or spread out when being used.

If you ended up replacing your coffee table with a/an ottoman/s, you may want to also add end tables so there is a place to set drinks, remotes, or lamps, if desired.

For an entertainment center, I would potentially choose something a bit more narrow to make sure it wasn't in the walkway, For instance, this entertainment center is 14" D so it is the same as the depth change in the wall so it could be flush. I can be clumsy and prefer to have things tucked away or I run into them!

Then I would add a rug, some lamps, and maybe a great mirror over the fireplace to make it look bigger and brighter! Good luck with your decorating and please share after pictures when you're done!

Thank you for all your help and ideas! The 60" dining table seems like a great fit. love the idea of a mirror above the fireplace. Playing around with some arrangement ideas, I think there is a good chance the TV will end up being closer in direction to the fireplace on the wall then centered on the wall any ideas as to how to balance an off center tv? A couch seems like a good idea as well i just cant seem to figure out the layout for a couch and chair now. Thanks everyone

Possible layouts for living room. Thanks for any help!

We decided on an extra long couch 108" width x 38" depth, now we are not sure if we should do a chair, 2 chairs or a love seat beside it. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks! (chair that is there is from another room, it measures 37" wide x 36" deep)

Say no to loveseats, the bane of good arrangements. The optimal seating, IMO, would have been a 3-seat sofa and two armchairs which should have been arranged facing the FP with TV on the right of it, dividing the living and dining sections. Now that you've lined everyone up side by side on the sofa, I'm not sure you want to add anything until you get the dining area in place. The sofa and the door swing allowance are already crowding you out of a decent dining space. Any additional pieces will make the issue worse. Lamps, including a replacement for the torchiere, and a chandy for the dining table are necessary too.

Thank you for the advice. We decided we did not like the TV next to or over the fireplace. we also plan to mount the TV (with wiring through the wall). The TV stand and coffee table will be removed/replaced. We plan to install can lights in the living area with smart lights and a hanging light above the table, so no floor lamps or table lamps will be needed. The dinning area is quite a difficult area with the door to the sun room/outside and the entry to the kitchen. We are planning to do a smaller scale dining table.

Relative scale, not exact, but this is are main living area layout.

Ambient light (can lights) is just one layer in a well planned lighting scheme.
