Your rug should be at least 4' longer and 4' wider than your table. I think you probably need an 8 x 10.

Thank you groveraxle. Unfortunatley 8 x 10 won't fit in this narrow dining area. I would like to cover up some of the maple hardwood that has yellowed over time. Do you have any suggestions on style? I was thinking sisal look?

Houzz has some lovely rugs at good prices. What about picking a green from that picture? I agree with previous comment about an 8x10. Your room looks big enough to handle it.

Mark out, on your floor with painters tape, the largest size rug that will permit you to anchor your table and chairs and permit them to be pulled out ON the rug. That is the size that you need. If it isn’t a standard size, consider a remnant that is bound to the size that you need. I could see a nicely bound sisal rug beneath your table. They can often be custom made and bound for your space.

Thank you drusen, the room narrows to 8' 3" at the header, and is 9' 4 " fron the front of the china cabinet to the header on the opposite side of the room. It is open to the kitchen which have bm cllassic gray paint on cabinets and divided by the kitchen island which is painted bm hymalian trek.

If an 8 x 10 won't fit then you don't need a rug. It will be too skimpy and the back legs of the chairs will be off the rug.

Get an 8 x 10 and bring it home and try it. Then go from there.

PThank you, ptreckel- that would be 7 x 9.

    Thank you groveraxle!

I prefer solid. What program do you use to photoshop? The visual is very helpful! Also, what site are you finding the rugs from?

In a room that small, if you need a rug, do a wall-to-wall sisal look. Anything smaller than 8 x 10 is not practical.

Jillian, I use Photoshop to photoshop. I search for rugs at plushrugs.com because I like their search function. You can refine by a whole bunch of attributes. When you find the rug you want, google it and look for the lowest price.

Your rug needs to be 4' wider and 4' longer than your table top measurement to allow your chairs to move in and out without having to "jump" the edge of the rug every time, which could put scratches on your floor. You can have broadloom carpet cut to fit and the edges bound to make it the required minimum size if 8'x10' is a bit too large. Take careful measurements, take pictures of the surrounding area to remind you of the colors in the area, and go shopping.

Something in that pale-medium green that will set off the green in both the art and your sideboard/hutch

Would it help with the rug size if the china cabinet was out of the room? And then the buffet was moved to the china cabinet spot (if it would allow a larger rug).

Love the art over the buffet!

Hi Leelee, Moving furniture would not help. The buffet is pushed back into a 14" deep x 7 1/2' long inset in the room. TY on the art:) Definitely fits the period of the house.

You need an 8x10 for your table/chairs. If that isn’t possible, go without a rug.

IMO, you have too much furniture in the space and too many table lamps.

No clock in a dining room…telling people it’s time to go?. And the little cabinet under does not belong in the room.

    Maybe a bar cart, instead.

Picture the room with the recessed green cabinet, the table/chairs and an 8 x 10 rug, and the art on the wall.

Replace the bureau with a serving console.

You need to try an 8 x 10 rug in your room. That's the only way to tell for sure. Get a cheap one from HD so you know you can return it since you're just trying it on for size.

JudyG~ recessed green cabinet? do you mean to move the china cabinet where buffet is, the art where china cabinet is, table & chairs as is and remove everything else? Not fond of bar cart, would never use and it looks messy to me...

No, no…I meant leave the china cabinet where it is. It’s the little cottagey white one which I would replace with a bar cart…carts are very useful (as you can move them around), but also they are open and visually take up less space than a solid piece.

No, no, I love your cabinet right where it is. Thinking something sleeker for a sideboard would give you more room, but you would still have a serving piece.

Pretty room:) TY for your suggestions Judy! Still pondering options.

The image that BeverlyFLA deziner is exacatly where 7 x 10 rug would run. An 8 x 10 would be hitting sides of baseboards where the header is that narrows the room.

    The painted X-backs look great!

Thanks Deco! My daughter thinks I should paint the 4 other x back chairs I have and replace the upholstered camel backs. The remaining 4 I have are matching side chairs to the two I painted. If I do rug, it will probably be neutral and change the table runner. Do you have opinion on rug or no rug? I thought rug could neutralize maple yellow floor a bit.

I am not an expert on rugs but I cannot help but mention that I love your room.

I am not sure what style it would called but I love the feeling of the room. I thought it was from some design online that you wanted to use as an inspiration.

I forgot to mention that I actually like the smaller piece with the clock. I feel that when people are over for dinner say they will keep looking at their phone or watch if they wear one to check the time and that can be distracting for conversations. I like the idea that the time is out in the open for everyone to see.

Awe, Thank you, winker58! It's a work in progress. I just liked the look of this clock in particular because it's a good contrast against the wall and doesn't compete with the barn art that can be seen from the dining room. Good point about checking phones and watches. It takes alot of trial and error for me~ partly because of a small budget and also working with a 120+ yr old home. It used to be a barn:) It has had several add ons over the years so have to work odd shaped spaces that aren't open or spacious.

The ideal "timer" for a dinner party is a fresh rose laying at each place setting. When the roses go limp the party is over.
