Best Patterned Daylilies of the 2018 Season

last modified: 6 years ago

Post your best three patterned daylilies and any runners up here. The next category will be Eyed Daylilies Without an Edge.

My three best patterns are below.

Stenciled Infusion, which had great plant habits and tall scapes, instant rebloom and lots of prolifs gave many wow flowers.

Victorian Garden Heaven's Applause was the longest blooming pattern in my garden. The pattern varies a lot based on temps.

Best pattern, but weak grower here, was Bow Tie Affair.

No patterned daylilies here. I'll just enjoys everyone else's.

Not too many patterned daylilies here, I probably need more : )

Blue Beetle is fairly new here. The pattern is consistent to far, temps seem to affect the color saturation a bit. I really like it so far.
Mysterious Eyes has been here a few seasons, has done well. Again the pattern is consistent and temps influence the color saturation.
Little Showman, a lovely small plant. It’s another new one here, has done well so far. Hot weather tends to make the blooms more rose colored.

Stenciled Infusion is a great one! I think I like its type of pattern better than the other varieties here. Debra, I’m interested to know what the percentage has been for the great patterns we see in your lovely photos?

Sherry - Stenciled Infusion and Bow Tie Affair always show patterns. In extremely hot temps (93+), VGHA has no patterning here. Bow Tie Affair blooms very early and always has a good pattern, although that photo above shows its best one. Here's another photo of Bow Tie Affair that is more the norm.

I picked up Stenciled Infusion because Debra said it was northern hardy. However, I am not impressed with the bud count I see in the pictures (looks like two branches and five or six buds). I believe it double scaped in TN, but do not expect that here. Screen Pattern here (fairly new) has had low bud count.

Asheville White Winged Dove is a bit better, but no "wings" in 2018 pictures.
Very reliable is the old Mystical Rainbow, and it doesn't canoe.

Courage to Change is not a large flower.
JP Moneybags is very reliable here.
Slight pattern here on Get Jiggy. Much of the time, looks like a feathered eye.
Wayne's World has been slow to establish. It is not a large flower. Can't really evaluate it yet.

Dr. Jules Michael Vinkman has a complex eye; don't know if it qualifies as patterned. I will let someone else post Entwined in the Vine, as my plant was fairly new and others have pictures of blooms in the garden.

Mantis - If I remember correctly most scapes on Stenciled Infusion had at least three-way branching and at least nine buds. I think the best scape had 16 buds. Because of the way I cropped that shot to get three blooms in, the lower branches are not visible.

Hmmmmm.......I’m guessing this type of bloom generally does best in warmer climates than mine. It seems Mantis's comments imply this, true or not?

I'm not 100 percent sure if all the ones I'm posting qualify as patterned.....but to my eye they are.

    CELESTIAL BEAUTY

Tall and a great bloomer for the north

    TRAHLYTA

This one never fails to impress me, both in its hardiness, vigor and scape production and it may be an 'oldie' but it's still dazzles.

    CAT DANCER

A smaller flower but always eye-catching and hardy

    WISPY RAYS

I probably could have used this one in the 'red' category as well as the 'eyed' but to me it has a pattern. It's just an awesome daylily in every respect. Great bloomer!

    RUNNER UPS.....

    SCREEN PATTERN

As Mantis noted, it is stingy with blooms but it does well enough that it stays; and the flowers are beautiful

    DR. JULES MICHAEL VINKMAN

Another nod to this one. Although brand new in 2018 it impressed me.

    DESTINED TO SEE

I don't know really if this is 'patterned' or not.....all I know is, it is a powerhouse in the garden. It always blooms well and even though it's been around forever, it still is a daylily of merit.

    BIRD TALK ?

I question it because I never actually ordered it. It was a stowaway fan in an order (it came bundled with another cultivar). I suspect it's a Lambertson because it doesn't flourish here. But the color and pattern are gorgeous.

Celeste, It’s always interesting to see how daylilies I have compare to the same ones you grow. I checked my Destined to See photos, yours has a more defined eye and band than mine has ever had! Yours surely looks patterned to me, mine..... not so much but it’s still a winner here.

Aahhhh, Kate, your photo of David Kirchhoff is much better than mine! Sound familiar?

This is a very interesting category. It shows such amazing developments in the modern daylilies. Stenciled Infusion is a lovely daylily that performs well for me too. It quickly forms a clump and the flowers open well most of the time. From the above, my favorite pattern are Bowtie Affairs and Screen Pattern. Overall favorite pics though are Entwined in the Vine and TRAHLYTA. Wow, I had no idea that EITV is that floriferous! It is also amazing that the flowers don't appear to be congested eventhough many are open at the same time. And Celeste's pic of Trahlyta is the best of this daylily on the web.

Some of my favorite patterns from this year are Angel Love

    Memories of Teresa

    Rings of WOnder

    Runners up

    Blue Eyed Butterfly

Seedling from Feather Fingers X Say Can You See

Seedling from Wave Effect X Polar Vortex

Wow, Karen......your seedlings rival the named varieties in beauty! In fact, I prefer that first seedling to just about any patterned daylily I've seen. Wonderful collection overall.

Karen, I too really like your first seedling better than most of the named varieties. To me, many patterned daylilies just look like they've lost their color, but yours is nice and deep and rich.

    Here are my runners up:

    Sycamore Frills -good rebloomer!

Venetian Pools - Had a bit of rebloom on this one.

Cobalt Rings - The inner pattern only shows up well in cooler temps.

Landon Lee - Don't forget appliques are patterns too!

    Aerial Applique

Karen - Your seedlings are gorgeous! I'm especially wowed by the first one you posted.

Debra, I'm always drawn to your photos of Landon Lee. I wonder if it would be happy here. It is so lovely.

I didn't add my favorite daylily in my above photos.....Jerry Hyatt.....because it was already shown in my favorite 'purples' thread. I'll show a different photo of it:

I see a pattern in it....and it's always getting it's picture taken because I love it so much.

Thank you all for liking my seedling! I really appreciate it as I spent too much on seeds! I am glad that there are some keepers to compensate for all the mediocres and the uglies. Hoping for a better performance next year as I move it out of the seedling bed.

Wow Celeste, your Jerry Hyatt is too gorgeous for words. I really like its veined pattern eye. Though I doubt I will get such good colors with it growing here.

Celeste - I don't know if Landon Lee would flourish as far north as you are. But if you want to try it, I can sent a couple of fans along with your trade items in the spring.

    Debra

Debra, that is really nice of you! I would like to try it here. Every time you've posted it I have thought about getting it but was wary. I do grow several Petits and they have all done well for me so I'm hopeful. I'm all for experimenting if you don't mind sharing and please request something else of mine to compensate if you'd like.

Thanks, Karen. Jerry Hyatt is spectacular here and if I ever move he will be the first daylily I dig up!

All the patterned daylilies posted are amazing. I especially like Bow Tie Affair and Stenciled Infusion.

Karen, your seedlings are lovely. I hope they have good plants under those beautiful flowers.

    Here are my best patterns.

Geometric Wizard continues to be one of my favorites. It does very well here for a southern-bred daylily.

Curious Cutie is from the same hybridizer and I have often wondered if they share genetics. Its biggest fault is that it turns to mush in rain, but Geometric Wizard does not.

I Don't Kid is doing well here. The third flower in the background is Purple Maze which is very similar in looks.

I love the delicate coloring on Ink and Pink.

Four Beasts in One is not well established yet, but I like the looks of it.

Oceans Eleven has been in the garden for many years. I love the eye. It often has a metallic look.

Here is Get Jiggy in our garden. This is the best pattern we have seen, but we haven't seen it often. Of course, if patterns really show best in cooler weather, we aren't going to see many in west central Indiana.

I know I have gone over my limit, but I have to post a pattern we found in a seedling. I didn't expect it as neither parent has a pattern.

    Nancy

Nancy - That seedling is really pretty! To put my cooler temps in perspective, I mean when night temps are in the lower 60s. Ours are in the 70s most of the season.

THanks Nancy! I hope that it will be as you said - the habit and vigor will match the loveliness of the flower. I really like your seedling too! Can your share its parentage? Your Ink and Pink is very nice. May look to add that one to my garde. I wish my Get Jiggy will give me pattern. It has been very stingy both with blooms and patterns.

Karen, the seedlings parentage is Abilene Lillian X Empire of Dawn and Dusk.

Ink and Pink has been here two seasons and it has done very well. Here is a not very good picture of its scape.

There's just too much fading during our summers for me to get overly excited about patterns. Almost all my daylilies are selfs for mainly that reason. Doesn't mean I don't lust to have them.....Nancy: Curious Cutie and I don't Kid are right up my alley with those colors and what a great shot Karen of Memories of Teresa. Kate: I like Arrowhead Princess with the circle pattern on the pale pastel lavender. Celeste: I've always liked Cat Dancer too......My number one pick though is Debra's Stenciled Infusion. That's a beauty...........Maryl

Not really sure what is considered a patterned daylily . Of course there are the obvious like Get Jiggy which I added 2 years ago but have yet to see anything I would call a pattern and without the pattern it really is not even a particularly attractively colored daylily. It was so " meh!" I dont think I even bothered to photograph it this year. I was figuring it was waiting to get established I am hoping to see some sort of patterning at least this year . Not too hopeful now that I have read Nancy's comment as we are in the sameish area weatherwise.

Again not sure whether this would be considered a patterned daylily or not . It does have a pattern but perhaps it is the daylilies with the zig zag lines that you are looking for here . Here are 2 I grow, the first is Purple Cheetah the second is a seedling .
