General Contractor/Remodeler Availability in Western NC

Hi Everyone. New to this forum but not to Houzz. I currently live in so Cal but own land in Boone, NC and want to move back there. My significant other holds a General Contractors (GC) license from Colorado but doesn't build new homes, really does renovation and remodel work. My NC GC told me a year ago that it was taking a long time to get things built because there just isn't enough labor to do it. Is that still the case? What do contractors charge hourly for something like a kitchen remodel (he does a lot of kitchens and bathrooms)? PLEASE keep your comments specific to northwest NC. Thank you. This Virginia girl wants to go back close to home.

The NC general contractor is right. I live in NETN 1 hour outside of Asheville. I am having a hard time finding an electrician.
It seems the ones who are qualified and actually want to work are booked months in advance. You can find plenty of people to promise to come give an estimate but never show up.

We just finished building a new home in Ashe county. Our builder has his regular crew, but has tried to hire on more labor and has found it hard to find them and keep them. I would say that building moves slow around here. The good subs are all very busy, but are usually in and out as fast as possible.

Hey Diana, are you looking to build a house or remodel a kitchen?

As for labor there is a national crisis in my opinion when it comes to skilled labor/physical labor. I as a builder have the same problem finding people that will even show up. I offer nearly $30 dollars an hour for general help and people still do not show up. (North Georgia/south west North Carolina - FYI)

If you think of moving I would get the ball rolling long before you move back closer to home, I am building a house right now and my local power company told me there is a 4 week wait to get permanent power to my house. 4 weeks, that completely threw a monkey wrench into my whole project.
