For the plants, I suggest a mixture of a single type of fern and hostas that do well in shade to part shade. For front door area, I suggest a much, much larger door mat/rug and larger porch light fixtures to greet visitors. I'm personally not fond of wreaths on front doors other than as Christmas décor. Looks like the sidewalk could use a power wash. Congrts on the new home!

Love Dig Doug's example...as usual. Since your garage door is right up front, think about painting it the same color as the siding. The white door is too much of a focal point.

Either widen the walk from wall to wall or add artificial turf flanking the walk. The conditions are not conducive to growing plants and if they were there, they'd impinge on the narrow space. Add flanking annuals at the beginning of the entrance "hall."

Notice how Doug has removed the narrow planting beds near the door to create a generous entrance porch. I would also widen the walk out to the drive so the two people could walk abreast. Keep the plantings with only a few types of plants, including something bright (either foliage or flowers) flanking the entrance porch where it meets the walkway as Yardvaark’s suggested. That can be in pots or in the ground. You want large enough swaths of plants for most of the plantings so that so they will read well from the road as well as looking nice from the near view. Plantings should be low enough so that they don’t block the sight lines to the door and so folks on the sidewalk don’t feel like they have to try to avoid brushing up against encroaching plants.

People can give you general guidelines but until you tell us where you are located it’s not possible to recommend specific plants.
