Fan Location in Living Room

What would you guys recommend? In the living room, should the ceiling fan be centered to the room or center the seating area? The path from foyer to kitchen would be adjacent to the stairs going up. There would be a couch creating a walkway. If the fan is center the room, the fan would almost be over the couch.

    Why not both?

The idea behind a ceiling fan is to keep the air circulating in the room. In the summer, you're looking for gentle air motion for natural cooling. In the winter, you want the convected warm air that builds up near the ceiling gently washed down to where it does some good.

IMO, this would be best accomplished with a fan mounted in the center of the room.

But it looks like you're asking this question because your living room is fairly large. If you think that you might sometimes like to have an extra breeze where your seating is, why not install a second fan there, on a separate switch?

Put the fan in the center of the room. You may move the couch later.
