And now- the 5 STAR BOOKS you recommend

salonva

I love these monthly threads (what we are reading) and find so many books that I might not hear of otherwise.

The discussion about books we've found disappointing and also the thread about 1 star books prompts me to think maybe we should also have a thread about books that were GREAT reads.

So many of us go through dry spells with books at times. I know I would welcome people recommending books that they really enjoyed and think would appeal to most.

here are a few I think are really worth reading:

The Love song of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce

The Radium girls by Kate Moore

The Art of Hearing Heartbeats byJan-Philipp Sendkerr

The Rent Collector by Camron Wright

A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline

I hope you'll join me and continue with the recommendations.

Loved A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline! I'll have to read up on some of your others, which are not familiar to me. I'll also peruse my Goodreads and see what I marked Five Stars!

These are great--- and there were some I though about adding but I see others already have. I do want to mention that I thought about whether to list Harold Frye with Queenie Hennessey (companion books ) so I am really pleased to see it mentioned by a few. Note- if you loved Harold and have not read Queenie, you must.

I can add The Curious Charm of Arthur Pepper.

This is a nice thread. I’m glad others enjoyed some of the same books I enjoyed. Here are some that come to mind of course I’m not listing books like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn or Gone With The Wind!

    The Interpreter of Maladies

    The Secret History

    The Goldfinch

    Juliet in August

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

    The Whistling Season

    Flight Behavior

I’m sure I will come up with more!

Hill Bachelors by William Trevor. One of the best short story writers of all times, imho. ETA, in English of course. Can’t pretend to be able to otherwise rate writers in languages other than the two that I do most of my reading in.

Beagles - I loved Juliet Naked too. Did you see the movie that came out this year? I didn't get a chance to see it.

And I'm going to Mexico tomorrow - Any suggestions for a beach read? I just finished Pachinko, and need a new book

dedtired, I had to log on this morning just to tell you how much I'm enjoying listening to Juliet in August. I'm listening to the audiobook on Scribd as I finish up the quilt I'm making my son for Christmas, and it's just mesmerizing me! Thank you so much.

Incidentally, here's another plug for Scribd. I somewhat randomly selected (and added to my 'listen to later' list) a bunch of the titles listed here, and they were all on there. For just $8.99, I have access to sooo many books. My one complaint is that the books don't download to Kindle, so I would have to read on my MacBook. So I mainly use it as a source for audiobooks while sewing -but it's still a real bargain.

I only listed what was already not mentioned by others, but if I were to include repeat mentions, I’d add All the Light We Cannot See. And also older (as in 25+ year vintage) books.

Coming back to add Molokai and to add that I think for me, I am thinking of more recent reads, but truly any that come to mind that were really memorable. I am often trying to find books that I may have missed (an easy example is Anne of Green Gables). Suggest away.
