Is there a particular style direction you are wanting to go in? I see a few very modern things like your painting, mirror and floorlamp mixed very traditional chairs and sofa. Do you have a photo of what the new table will look like? and will you be replacing the chairs too? All of your pieces are very pretty they are just not working well together.

I would paint the area above the fireplace to match the walls, if you know the color. If you don't, look a light neutral that coordinates with the wall color that is a shade darker. I don't think that you really need an accent color there.

Your rooms seem to be having an identity crisis. It's a contemporary home with some traditional furniture and what looks like an Eames lounger in the foreground. Are you going for an eclectic look? Will you be changing the dining chairs?

i think a round coffee table will allow access through the room.

The mirror above the fireplace has to go, because it doesn't reflect anything worth reflecting. It's in the wrong place.

This is your home, not a dentist's office waiting room. Don't buy 'wall art' from a décor store; homes deserve better. You want something that speaks to you and says something about you and your life--something that guests will notice and ask about. And when they ask, you don't want your only answer to be "The shipping was free!".

Buy real art, and take your time looking. make it an adventure.

Placing the french style chairs around a tulip table in your dining room would lead me to replacing the very trad sofa with a clean-lined and sleek (maybe leather) sofa to create a similar feel in the green room. I'd carry the white paint onto the fireplace wall. Art should speak to you, my inclination would be to consider contemporary photography. Now what is going on in the other space that we just get a peek of?

I'm still around. I love everyone's input. I am, for starters,

I can't replace the sofa and chairs in the living room. They were a gift from my parents.

Based on your comments, here's what we're doing:

1) Painting the room off-white - no more accent wall.

2) Replacing the coffee table - with what, I am not sure.

3) Possibly replacing the mirror with art. Someone's comment about the mirror not reflecting anything worthwhile is something I have to think about.

What do you think of either of these 2 sets of prints above the sofa? I like this art because it's simple, contemporary and the colors are pretty.

And these paper sculpture above the fireplace?

A "gift" from your parents in the sense that they had the furniture in their house and passed it onto you? Just wondering as the dining furniture has the same style as the livingroom. Or is it a case that your taste are now changing compared to when your parents bought you the furniture and now your taste is evolving? Would you be able to paint the living room chairs and re-upholstered them to make them more modern as I think once you get your tulip dining table you are going to see that it isn't the cohesive look you are trying to achieve between the rooms unless you really mix it up.

My mother chose and purchased the living room and dining room furniture. I expressed a preference for modern but she insisted she knew better and bought this stuff without any input from me. It is high quality and pretty just not my taste. But I think there's hope if I can create a cohesive look with eclectic style art and furniture.

Eclectic is the hardest style to achieve. The best eclectic mix looks curated, like each piece was chosen for a specific unique attribute, unique being the operative word.
