Modern But Bland Living Room

last modified: 7 years ago

Hi Everyone!

We have an awkward living room and are looking for some advice.

The fireplace is a dark grey/charcoal color and we will be swapping out the beige carpet (and fireplace hearth) at some point with wood floors when we can afford it.

We are looking to jazz up the overall space, especially the inset wall adjacent to the fireplace behind our tv. We recently put a tv in the room and plan on mounting it to the wall.

Also, we are planning on doing something different with the couches and probably getting new couches altogether. I’m also trying to understand how to position the couches... should the longer couch be facing the fireplace or the tv? We normally have a chair in place of where the fireplace is.

We were inspired to do a modern wood plank wall behind the tv to offer some interesting texture and to lighten up the space (examples attached). Everything just seems so dark and bland!

Any advice on materials, paint colors, and furniture furniture positioning is greatly appreciated!

These are the modern wood planks, it wouldn’t let me attach the pics to the original post. Thanks again!

This is a very common dilemma. Neutral on neutral needs layers and tectures.

What is the opening behind the current sofa?
I agree that the tv should be on the same wall as the fireplace rather than in that nook.

It is the foyer/front door. Thank you all so much for the input!

Nice home. I like your wall to wall and marble floor together. Very nice. I might nix the area rug.

I would get rid of the 2 rugs and get one that fits the space correctly and makes more of a statement and then get pillows that compliment it. Having a black fireplace makes a statement and what is happening is that you don't have anything else to support it (and balance the room) as far as being dramatic so the eye is only drawn to the fireplace and thus makes the room boring. You do have a great space, it just needs some tweaking. And if you plan to get new couches, I'd do that first before making any other purchases as those 2 items will drive what you purchase for the rest of the room.

See how color takes the focus off of the fireplace and makes the room more jazzy. Even if you took out some of the color in this room, it still works and balances the room.

Here's another photo. Not as much color but you can see how the color pulls the eye away from the fireplace and moves it around in the room.

Tedbixby hit the nail on the head. You are drowning in a sea of neutral and need to bring some color into the room. I would not do wood on the walls, I would move the TV and add color. Area carpet with color and accents of color in pillows, blankets, wall art and accessories.
