Need help converting living room into a more contemporary tv room/family room.
Comments (17)Hi there, I would remodel the fire place, lower the hearth, remove all the paneling above and remove the wooden mantle, replace with a plain simple concrete mantle or similar simple shape. Then hang the TV above, if you must. Put something like stone in front, so your fire doesn't reach the wood floor. I would also consider a more modern color on the wall, Warm light gray f.e) get rid of the characterless chairs and the shelf unit. Replace with lower cabinets, hang artwork from artist you might want to support...Get some plain folded shades for the windows, and curtains next to the door to the deck. Also, consider a low back sofa opposite the fire place (CB 2 or so), so you create behind a small walkway towards the dining area. Then you have space for two lovely chairs (different, not matching to the sofa) with a small glass table between. Think of lighting. Have a sisal carpet underneath the seating area and a more modern square coffee table. It is always good to keep the flow going, something right in front of the slider door to the deck is not so good. Then have a second, different carpet under a modern tulip style dining table, maybe round or oval and four to six modern chairs. Hang a cool chandelier over the table, get rid of the fan there. One is enough. A mirror could hang opposite to the wall of the door, to reflect the light. This could be a wonderful light filled room. Think less is more. Have one old piece in there, for interest and an eclectic feel. A wing chair with a graphic upholstery could be fun.... Have fun!!!! Comments (32)Hello- The room decorated as it is is gorgeous! BUT every piece in this room stands alone, while a living room should have an overall sense of gathering. White seating tells me "Don't sit here unless you're absolutely clean." It's very pretty but not always the most casual and inviting for a living room. Also, the chairs without arms would be better suited for a reception area. Finally, the tall, floral centerpiece in a glass vase on a glass tabletop feels too fragile for a living room. Perhaps just transplant your current setup into a room that serves as more of a reception area/parlor in your home. Bring in some wood surfaces or driftwood pieces, inviting furniture, an ottoman, usable lamp lighting placed closer to seating area (perhaps a Tiffany lamp?), and plants with all that wonderful light!! Finally, place just a few very personal items somewhere in the room, on a table or wall i.e. framed pictures, found object, a treasured gift... Good luck!...See MoreAlmost blank canvas, formal living room/ dining room more pics inside
Comments (1)How is the room looking now? I imagine the sofa has arrived and you've played with the arrangement a bit? I'd suggest some throw pillows or blanket to soften the feel of the leather. Have you considered any additional furniture in the room? I'd consider where you want the focus of the room to be. If it's a sitting room for conversation, I'd suggest a couple other side chairs like the photos below....See MoreIs it ok to put your china cabinet in your living room?
Comments (36)JudyG Designs, I love the idea of a china cabinet in the bedroom for linens. That picture is amazing. I would never have thought of that but I'm pretty limited on original ideas. I would never have thought of any of these suggestions that people have posted! I'm so grateful to this forum! The fireplace turned out really nice. We ordered it online from DivinciCastStone.com. One of the easiest purchases ever. Installation was done by our tile guy and prep of the wall was merely adding 3/4 inch plywood to the entire wall under the sheetrock. https://www.devincicaststone.com...See Morealways1stepbehind
