Barren Colonial Exterior Facade

last modified: 7 years ago

Hello all!

My wife and I recently completed a large renovation to a home and just moved in. We pretty much gutted the entire interior of the home, opened everything up (including enlarging windows) and just moved in a few weeks ago.

We are really struggling with what to do in the empty space above the front door. No clue why a window was not originally planned here - there was a hallway upstairs when the home was originally built in 1956.

This photo was taken after the new windows were installed. We have since removed the iron scrolls from above the first floor windows and plan to remove the white painted lintels when the weather gets a bit warmer.

What are some suggestions on how to deal with this area on our facade??

Thank you!

I found a photo which pretty much resembles your house (I like). You can read the description of the door trim here.

It was a surprise to me, as I wouldn’t expect to find a Federal door pediment or shutters on a house of your style.

I expected to find something more along this line….a porch.

I am not a pro. I am a minimalist and I like the look as is.

I like the stripped down style of your home. It reads 1930s to me! I do think that you might consider a more modern railing on your stairs. And I suggest that you hire a landscape designer to develop a plan for your gorgeous home. The few boxwood that you have seem rather mundane. Good job!

A modern, black, metal awning that's rather tall would look amazing (above door).

Doug…nice idea, although probably not true to the design, but I don’t like the pediment I showed above, either and that photo came from an Ohio Historical site,

Wonder how the door would look with the off white wood trim painted black?

That house isn't colonial. It's got a real '30s vibe.

The windows you bought are wonderful and go really well with the '30s vibe. But if you wanted colonial, you bought the absolutely wrong windows; you'd need white double-hungs.

I'd leave it as is and work on landscaping--especially to cover the concrete foundation completely.

Work on the landscaping with a designer. Plant as you can afford to; consider adding fill on the left side of the house to level front. A nice evergreen tree on the left would be a good counterpoint to the large tree on the right.

The earliest COLONIAL homes have no porch and little decoration over the door. These homes date from the 1600s into the 1700s. The home in question has that hallmark regardless of when it was built. From the early 1700s into the early 1800s the Colonial GEORGIAN style featured doors capped with entablature supported by decorative pilasters. Both Colonial and Georgian Revival styles began in the early 1900s through the 30s and 40s, hence the 30s vibe. While I think a truly historic home should retain historic detail, I see no reason for most owners not to update their homes in whatever way gives them more comfort and usability.

just the porch idea with copper roof

I wouldn't waste money adding a peaked roof.

Spend the money instead on enhancing the entrance. They windows are not suited to a Colonial house and it will more easily conform to something modern. Just my opinion and I am not professional.

I would add a portico but not one in Colonial style.

I like the widened steps and awning above.

    I like this one too.

Your landscaping is basic to put it mildly. Money spent on a pro design would be worthwhile.

What if you extend the portico vertically? See image. And place a black down cast light on the portico so it stands out.

Better landscaping would enhance the look of the house. I would first landscape the front yard,

see how that affects the whole facade and then decide if I need to change the Portico or any of the exterior.
