Matching Headboard broke, can't be repaired. What HEADBOARD/BED to get?

Hello.

I started a make over on this room, and thought I was going in one direction, but since finalizing my decisions, the headboard to the set has become damaged and can't be repaired. But the rest of the furniture is in great condition and we'd really like it keep it.

The question is now, what headboard/bed set should we get?

The set is no longer available for purchase, so we can't just replace it.

We were thinking silver metal to match the hardware on the nightstands and dresser, but we don't really like metal headboards/bed sets as the bed is always "wiggly" and uncomfortable, etc.

We'd like to get a solid wood bed, (kids will be jumping on it,) preferably a platform bed so we don't have to deal with a bed skirt/dust ruffle (which we hate.)

We also don't want a fabric headboard.

So wood it is.

Problem... what wood color and design?

The set that it will be with is very shiny and dark brown with a bit of "diamond" design to it. (I tried to take close up pictures of the design, but not sure if it will show on here.)

We were thinking Off White, Black, Gray in terms of color (although not set on anything at all.)

But the design is tricky, because the set is so modern. We'd like to stick with the modern theme, but are open to other ideas (just not "beachy", "cottage", or "cabin".)

All ideas are welcome.

Thank you.

Thank you so much for your reply. I think we're going to stick with wood or a metal headboard if we can't sort out anything in wood. (Love your designs, btw. The bath with the silver and blue wallpaper is everything!)

I think a metal headboard would look the best. Although it's a bummer to have the headboard broken, I think it's a fortunate thing. The metal headboard will be a great contrast, since having all of the furniture matching is boring.

I would suggest that a simple wall hung upholstered headboard, with a platform bed would work best with your remaining furniture.
a simple design could easily be reupholstered as needed...

I think you're right @annied. I've been "secretly" a little excited it broke, now I have an excuse to change up the look. I agree, it being all one color/design has been boring.

I really like the geometric design you added.

    Thanks

Isn't this the same room from this thread? https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/5558449/hi-designers-need-help-designing-this-bedroom-makeover-modern-forest

Are you still attempting a "high end" modern forest look? Do you still want the image to pop in your listings?

Also consider black or brown leather; durable and readily available....oh and a mattress is not a trampoline; the quickest way to destroy a mattress is to jump on it. If you go with a platform, the support slats could be rapidly destroyed by jumping on the mattress.....just sayin'.

Exactly @Holly. (Trying to get away from all the nonsense on that thread and just get design ideas)

And since things had changed with the headboard, thought I'd look for new/different ideas. But I still like the idea of the emerald green comforter.

But now I have to sort out a new headboard before I can move forward with the rest.

@SusanDavis... if you only knew... long story.

Bottom line, the bed has to be very sturdy.

IMO a metal headboard will look cheap with that furniture so I am in the upholstered headboard camp.BTW those tiny lamps and mirrors are not working. The other mirror reflects nothing so some art there would be better . I sure do not see the forest them here anywhere so I guess you abandoned that idea. I always find a floor length mirror on the inside of the closet door a good idea in a guest room.

If you do an upholstered headboard ( not a bed ), BOLT it to the wall and shove platform frame up snugly against it. Much easier to pull the entire bed away from a wall for thorough cleaning behind, where dust and hair accumulate very quickly, and ZERO jiggling....

NOT doing an upholstery, fabric headboard.

    Moving on...

If anyone has any WOOD or as a last resort, METAL headboards/bed suggestions, I'd love to see them.

    Thanks

Leather is not "upholstery" . A Sunbrella fabric is bleach capable, scrub capable. You won't really find " a very sturdy" separate headboard and platform guaranteed to blend well with existing side tables. ........and it will jiggle unless you buy the ENTIRE bed, rails foot board etc. Moving on.................: ) and thank you !

Who is the maker of the set? Often the manufacturers color/finish stays pretty close from year to year, even when the style changes. I will say that in our furnished rentals, I've been very happy with Hooker Furniture in bedrooms. Not the finest,in line or finesse, but built like tanks and often available at deep discount. But I never match sets.

I think Jan's suggestion is an excellent one. Sunbrella fabric for the headboard would provide the durability that you would require and you would also be able to customize the bed and avoid the matchy look of an all wood bedroom "set". The look would be much more refined and luxurious, in my opinion.

Hi @Holly. We already looked into it, it's not possible. But thanks for the "Hooker Furniture" suggestion. I'll look into it.

Welllllll actually it is a skilled trade, involving generally, fabrics suited to the plying of that trade, and leather can of course be included. Good luck .

You are welcome to use "Sunbrella" fabric in your home, @IShack17, we do not want to use it. Think we'll stick to using it on our deck cushions.

I'm not sure how else how to convey the fact that we don't want a fabric headboard.

    Interpretive dance perhaps?

Please advise and I'll consider uploading a video if it will help.

Perhaps it would be best to visit your local furniture store to find a possibility for a headboard.
    Ja Doe thanked annied75

Yes, we've done that @annied... found a few we think might work, but thought I'd come on here to get different ideas on wood, design, finish, etc. before making a final decision.

I'm thinking at this point, I'll have to go with metal. Not a big fan, but it doesn't give me the "ick factor" that fabric does. I like to disinfect everything whenever possible, can't really do that with a headboard (and the fabric disinfectant really doesn't truly disinfect.)

When I go to a hotel that has fabric headboards, I put my fresh towels over them. They creep me out. They're just nasty and gross when you see them under a black light. I was just staying at a 5 Star hotel over New Year's and they had fabric headboards, and I just couldn't do it.

Anyhow, thank you for your suggestions.

Sensitive much about the matchy bedroom set comment? It's probably a good thing from a design perspective that the original headboard broke. Good luck with the project, hopefully you will still get some help even after others see how you treat someone who offered a valid and respectful point of view.

    Signing off from this thread.

@Ishack 1) I don't even know what you mean re: the "matchy bedroom set comment", so I'm going to ignore you in terms of that statement.

    2) I find it infantile (and a massive waste of time,) when people to come on these threads with superior attitudes and think they can "convince" people asking for design advice that they know what is better for them.

It's like when a soccer mom with 5 kids goes into a car dealership and the salesman keeps trying to sell her sport's cars when she keeps telling him she wants a mini van.

I've clearly stated we don't want a fabric headboard, I stated it very politely ...the first 3 times... and you and a few others keep suggesting fabric headboards.

    .

It's rather annoying to have to repeatedly write "we don't want a fabric headboard", we want wood or metal.

But at least you have the good grace to to sign off this thread.

Perhaps the most invalid analogy ever:

"It's like when a soccer mom with 5 kids goes into a car dealership and
the salesman keeps trying to sell her sport's cars when she keeps
telling him she wants a mini van".

    More accurate analogy:

It's like when a soccer mom with 5 kids goes into a car dealership and
the salesman keeps trying to sell her sport's cars when she keeps
telling him she wants a mini van.

but she wants it to look like a sports car, get the mileage of a Prius, the longevity of a Volvo, the ten year warranty included..... for the price of a used Chevy compact,. The other difference is she may have the "good grace" to realize it's not possible.

Politely stated, the above beds are West Elm and Ethan Allen respectively. I would suggest jumping by kiddies on either is not a great idea, and both will be in the vicinity of a grand. They will not jiggle as they are the entire bed, versus a headboard bolted to a hollywood frame.

I would suggest the first, to avoid the "matchy matchy" which is to drown a room in dark brown furniture, in this case a dresser, two side tables and bed, all the same.

The warm golden tone far more updated , especially in consideration with green.........

I'll politely suggest a hardware change on the brown furniture should that be an issue.

@Patrcia Either you lack reading comprehension skills or you "like the sound of your voice".

Either way, you have no interest in being of any help. You just want me to agree with you.

@Jan, clearly you don't understand analogies. But I respect the back flips you are attempting to do to make your false analogy work.

    That stated...

The gold bed set is actually very nice, I didn't even think of going with gold. And there are tones of light gold in the set (it doesn't show in the pictures I provided.)

The gold bed idea is what I meant by "out of the box" thinking. It's not excepted and something I never even considered.

    You see, it IS "possible".

    It checks all my boxes:

    1) Metal or Wood

    2) Will match the bedroom set

    3) Not fabric

Plus it has the added bonus of being really interesting. I know gold is going to be out of style 10 mins after I buy a gold headboard, but it's not too pricey, so it will work for a few years.

    Well done and thank you.

Since you don't want a fabric headboard, I saw this black rattan headboard (King or Queen). New larger table lamps, art on the wall, new bedding and curtains.
