4 x 12 subway tiles look okay in an alcove tub area?

I am redoing a small bathroom. Tub is surrounded by 3 walls. I like the subway tile look but not the small tiles. Would the 4 x 12 tiles look good? The floor is 12 x 24 tiles. I am so not a decorator. Please help.

Is this a tub/ shower? I like larger format tile whenever possible it keeps grout lines to a minimum and I actually very ogten use the same tile in the shower as on the floor 12 x24 and I love it.IMO there should be no problem with that tile.

How far up the wall are you going? I agree 12x24 is the preferred size for shower walls, I would say the exception would be if it’s a very small area with not a lot of wall. As stated above it’s a lot of cleaning. Do you have any photos?

I will be the third one to recommend 12x24 on the walls as well.

4x12 tile will look fine, especially if your home's style is traditional, as is often the case in a remodel. In a traditional home a marble-look large format tile would work well on floor and tub walls. You can search on "alcove bathtub" to find examples of tile treatments.

Be aware that a 4x12 tile may have some bowing which will cause lippage and a ripple effect on the wall.

Show us your floor tile and a photo of the rest of the bathroom so we can help you select the tile.

We are going all the way up to the ceiling. It is a tub/shower combo alcove. The 12x24 tile is a bit large because each side of the tub is only 30 inches wide. Thats why I was thinking the 12 x 4 tile. Wall tile is a light gray. (like in the showroom photo just 12 x 4 not squares) Floor tile is in he showroom photo below also The other two photos are are tub and vanity in our current bathroom. Whole bathroom is being gutted. Not putting tile around room like old bathroom. Just in tub area. All new vanity, toilet etc. What do you think? 12 x 4 tile look okay?

Older, traditional home so I wouldn't advise 12x24 tile.

Isn't the current tile 4x4? It won't look much different since you're using gray again. Maybe you'd want to pull a lighter color from the floor tile. Personally I'd choose a different floor tile because your home doesn't seem suited for a rustic vibe.

What year was the home built? What style? 12 x 24 tile is OK in my opinion for a 1950s tract home. Not so much for an older home built in the 20's or 30's.

    1953

Mayflowers - What size floor tile to you recommend? It is such a small bathroom. Any daltile you recommend to go with the gray 12 x 4 subway tile?

I would do a marble-look porcelain hexagon. I like ccwaters' in the "Please vote, mirrors" thread because it has just a little gray veining. Then you could use white and/or gray colors for the vanity and countertop.

that floor is almost the same as the floor in my other bathroom. Any other ideas? I do want a bit larger then the tiny designs.

There were some on the Daltile website in a cooler gray tone that didn't mimic wood as much as the one in the showroom. There was variation in the color but it was less linear than that tile. That is a strong stripe pattern for a small bath.

I think you'd be fine with a 12 x 24. The early 1950s began the rapid transition from a two story colonial to a more modern, less traditional aesthetic. If you were built in 1953, I'm guessing it may have been a 1 story ranch?

I’m so stuck on what type floor with the 12x 4 light gray subway walls. I agree with mayflowers original floor picked out doesn’t go with style. should I do squares? Rectangle? Large or small. I really hate remodeling.

Without having seen these tiles in person, I'd look at samples of these and use a 12x24. You want some gray in the floor tile to pick up the gray shower tile.

Patricia Colwell recommended this layout for small baths in another thread. It makes a plain tile more interesting.

yes, that would look nice. Except I would do 4x12 ceramic tiles in the tub. (unless you have porcelain. it looks like real marble) Real marble in the shower is a PIA. They make that basketweave tile in porcelain.

I did 4x12 white ceramic tiles in my shower and 4x16 marble tiles on the floor. I also did that basketweave tile in my water closet

mine was done in the black marble.

here's the carrara basketweave with gray dots

Another option is the 4x4's set in this off-set pattern.

This exact type of set-up would look dynamite in your bathroom. using the basketweave is a perfect compliment to this look. Or did you say you were converting that to a shower?

these are the Zellige (the white squares) line from Cle'Tile. 2x2's. but they come in 4x4 and 3x3 hex.

and just to show you want 3x6 subways would look like w/the black.

The tile is porcelain not marble. I also hear marble is hard to maintain. I want total maintenance free! I like the gray basket weave floor I wasn't sure if the marble look subway would be too much with it. Didn't know if the same tile in a 12 x 12 would be better for the walls. The bathroom is so so small. I figured since it was in the same family it would look nice. I really hate the whole process of decorating since I don't see colors well.

    I would do 4 x 12 in the shower 12 x 24 are too large for 30" walls..

smits,,,you've shown two pics of tubs. which one is getting tiled?

your space doesn't look that small.

what kind of vanity are you getting?

doing a 12x24 tile in that one tub you said was 30" would be horrible. you'll end up with less than a 6" sliver on each side. Consider the math that comes with cutting and laying tiles when you have to choose something.

I only posted one tub. It’s the one with two different color tiles. It is 60 inches long. I was going to do 12x24 on floor not walls. The walls I was thinking 4 x 12 subways. I think now we are going with a wide basketweave floor with 4x12 subway marble looking subways. (Porcelain).

ah, ok,,,got confused w/the tub from the showroom.

So that basketweave tile you showed is a porcelain? and you would be using the matching subway tiles? (who makes this porcelain tile?) I think it would be a nice match.

I would do a warm charcoal vanity or even a warmer wood like walnut. If you do a stark white, it's going to be rather 'cold' without some type of other warm options.

or you could do it like this w/the gold, hardware, bring in warmth w/the blind or stool or even baskets, a rug, etc.

It is a porcelain tile. I dont know who makes it. I retiurned the sample already. The vanity is white like in the last picture you posted. I was going to paint the walls a warm color and like you said bring it in the window treatments.

What did you decide and how did it turn out?
