Do you have an Apple Watch?

What’s so great about them? My DD asked for one for Christmas, we didn’t get it, but now her birthday is coming up and I’m considering it. To me it just seems like it’s a big distraction — do we really need to get phone calls and texts on our watches? But I’m sure I’m missing something. Am I?

I have one and love it! I'm in the fitness industry and I can control music, timers, and workout tracking all in one place while working in a class setting.

Dh just got me my SECOND one in a year! Ugh...I got one last year from him for Christmas, enjoyed it very much until Jun...when apparently (I say apparently bc I literally do not remember DOING anything to hurt it) I did something & cracked the screen to the point it couldn’t (wouldn’t?) work. The screen fixing places don’t fix watch screens. And it was going to cost $200++ for Apple to fix a 6 month old watch!

I just couldn’t stomach that. Ridiculous! So I did without. And really missed the fitness tracking, to the point I was considering getting myself a FitBit, but didn’t think they looked as cute. Dh was probably desperate to find a gift for me...so hence he got me the Apple Watch, Nike version this Christmas. *eyeroll* And I do love the workout app, which lets you set workout goals (distance or time or probably some other metrics) for each exercise session.

Honestly, though, for me...if I wasn’t a runner, I wouldn’t get enough out of it. It’s useful when I am at home...I don’t have to keep my phone near me if I am expecting a call, but that certainly isn’t a reason to get one! You can quickly preview texts....I don’t know...just depends how your dd uses the functions. My 16 yo wants one bc it “looks cool”...she won’t be getting one from me!

This story almost conveniced me that having one would not be a bad idea.

“"I was just looking for my phone, and I had my Apple Watch on, so I pinged it and it was underwater,"

I keep losing my phone, largely because I use it for time tracking functions, so I looked into getting one and would consider it if I could make calls on it, but that's probably a$king a lot. Oh, and that rescue story is the upside of not having online privacy!!

No and I have no desire to have one; and I'm an Iphone user. While I don't want to "break up with social media" as Ida Claire has, I don't want to be tied to it. Many functions, I don't even put on my phone; preferring instead to only go to the sites on my laptop which limits time. Also, I don't wear a watch and if I did I don't like the look of the apple watch (or others similar). Too big. But that's just me and my opinion!!

Our oldest DD, 23, just inherited her older sister's Apple watch, when she upgraded. Here's the best thing about it: you can instantly summon the police through it. Of course, she has an iphone as well, but that can be dropped or forgotten, and the watch is always on her wrist, and it takes just a few seconds to activate.

Sueb, what are the reasons that your DD wants one?

My reasons for not wanting an apple watch are similar to tinam's… but the people I know who love theirs use those same features (and a few more) to their advantage. I don't know anyone in their teens who has one-- one of my sisters and a number of my coworkers have them and they use them primarily for business.

You’re all confirming what I thought — basically I think she wants one because it’s the “cool thing“ but I think she’d get annoyed by it over time because she’s very petite and all her jewelry is very dainty. And she already spends 4 hours a day in a gym whether she wants to or not and wouldn’t be tracking her activity that way because apple watches and gymnastics don’t mix!

    Thanks!

I was thinking about getting one and still might. I asked my friend about hers and she does track steps and activity on hers, b ut she says the best think is being able to answer a call if she wants to when she is walking the dog, working in the yard or doing other things without having her phone with her. She can see messages and alerts, so she isn't out of touch or out of reach, but she doesn't feel obligated to run for or answer a phone. That's kind of how I see I would use one -- maybe also for some music.

I don't have one, mainly because I like pretty watches and the Apple watches are, at least to my eyes, unattractive.

That's the down side -- a bit large and not what I would typically want in a watch (and honestly, I am not accustomed to wearing a watch since I have had a cell phone. You can customize the face -- that might help.

I got one for Christmas and wasn't sure if I was going to like it.... I LOVE it! I have a gorgeous watch that I wear on my left hand (because it is a piece of jewelry) and wear the large iPhone watch on my right hand. I find myself not looking at my phone as much as I used to, I am one that has the addiction~ so it has helped that. You just aren't as attached to your phone because if you get that call or text you will know. You can also buy all kinds of fun bands that can dress it up if needed.

I've bought 2 of them (bought the 2nd in hopes I'd find it more useful than the first b/c it had cellular connection w/o the phone). Have yet to find a real purpose for either, and don't wear mine. I like the Fitbit better b/c it is much smaller and less obtrusive and stays charged much longer.

I've had one for a couple years and love it. At work I like how it reminds me about meetings and I can discreetly read DH's constant texts while in meetings. At home I've been using the timer while cooking rather than setting timers. Great when you have a crowd over and can't hear the ding of a timer.

We got DS one for Christmas. He hasn't worn a watch for a few years, so decided to return it and upgrade his iPhone instead.

I upgrade to the Plus IPhone for the larger screen...I could only imagine struggling to read a text on an apple watch. Plus I haven't worn a watch in years.

I just bought one and LOVE it. It’s made me more active in one week. I started running again. Cycled this weekend without my phone, listened to music, took phone calls. Makes me more active at work and I dont feel so attached to my phone now. Highly recommend!

The Fitbit is a better fitness tracker IMO, that has some smartwatch functions, but the Apple watch has more smartwatch functions and decent fitness tracking. Both companies are in an arms race with wearable health. Apple Watch will have electrocardiogram functions, and Fitbit has been working on oxygen/sleep/sleep apnea for awhile. But pretty much these are the two big companies left in that a lot of the other fitness trackers like Jawbone and Nike Fuel band are done. Garmin is a little smaller market and appeals to a lot of runners.

I can get texts and phone call notices on my Fitbit Ionic, but I can't respond.

There are better apps that track sleep and/or snore patterns than using a watch or Fitbit. My dentist recommended one for snore monitoring when I got my Somnodent (SnoreLab, the free version) and there was one demo’d on a morning program today for sleep patterns but I can’t recall the name now. Sleep something or other.

Imdo love my Apple Watch though. I use it almost as much as my Garmin, especially for walks. And I love that I can change out the bands, use it outside and not worry about taking my phone everywhere, and some of the other features.
