I think that depends on the height of the user and what/where it is used for. We insalled one in our bathroom for my husband to use so we set it at the height of his face and to the left side of the regular bathroom mirror he uses.

Very close, right next to the mirror. The mirror is an large square framless one so we needed to get it as close as we could to make it functional. There are no "side" walls near our vanity so it had to be on the back wall. I would stand at the vanity and make sure you can easily reach it to adjust it. The placement really needs to be more about function than looks.

I tried a lot of these mirrors but in my opinion wall-mounted ones are the best due to proper lighting. I would recommend checking this article if you want to know more. You can either buy one or make it by yourself, pretty handy, don't you think?
