10 yrs and I still can’t get our living room right - HELP PLS

last modified: 4 years ago

Hi Houzz! I am making my family of six crazy with this living room - dining room and the changes that inevitably happen every four months :) I desperately need some expert opinion on layout - even to give me a plan to fulfill over the next year...be forewarned - this is no easy feat!!!
A bit of history:
Last year, the grandish piano found itself in the dining room 1) because I was sick of everyone dumping their stuff on the table when they got home and 2) to create a music room and 3) to keep food off the couch during weekends. With four kids 17 - 10yrs and only one living space the living space is our family room, game room, Wii room, work out room, homework/ computer rm, and now dining room. Challenges/Questions: 1)
where to put the tv?? This is probably the root of our problem - I don’t like to see the tv but it just seems most practical over the fireplace and I keep avoiding that option - we watch occasionally
2) I love art and books and have some great pieces but few walls without windows
3) no storage in this house!!
4) no freakin entry - seriously ??? That would be a deal breaker in my new wisdomed self!
5) we use the couch for family nights it it is down (constant fluff work) and is just big
6) I would like to move the piano back in and originally had it under the elk as that space is eaten!! But I love it most in the corner on the left side surrounded with windows and enjoying the view while playing
7) the Elk!! Truth be told - I cried when that beautiful beast took an entire corner of our main room as we unfortunately do not have tall enough walls to mount over the fireplace!!! Ugh - I did ask about raising the roof I married a hunter - enough said. We do eat healthy meat.
I tried a bookshelves on the main wall rt of the entry but it was dark and made the room feel small. (My bedroom became the library as it is quite large)The room is heavy on the elk side and especially with the piano under it and could not find a balance except to put something dark on the indent side of the fireplace which also balanced the entry door - the windowed corner always feels unbalanced.
A friend just gave me the new beige leather couch, marble coffee table, side table and shelf that she did not need. With all that being said - pls help me with layout ideas - I can get rid of everything but the elk (but it can move) the walls are hand oiled (outlawed now) and turned out too caramel but it looks nice - can work on color change as well. I like the chocolate in the dining room. Travertine is in the kitchen, and baths. Light beige window moulding also runs throughout the house.

Hi Seajay! I am glad to see you are making progress! It is very rainy here today on the Gulf coast! I have a contractor remodeling our master bath right now! The soak tub has been converted to a walk-in shower. And the old shower is being framed as a closet! They have been here since Tuesday, and they are almost done today! Yay! The painter we are hiring just called and wants to start next Tuesday! OMG, my head is spinning!😂🤣😂

Hi seajay! So nice to see you! So happy you are making progress. We've had some nice cooler weather for a few weeks and today is the warmest in a while--80* and sunny. Hope you got to see your Rocky some more. 😻😍

The winter in Palm Springs has been less than wonderful this year..too…more rain and cloudy moments than usual..but still enjoy morning walks..and outdoor living in the garden…
watching the weather reports…all over the world…has been a little scary…so no complaints here…

So heartwarming to see you, Seajay! I haven't received notifications for this thread for ages, so this was meant to be today. You are often in my thoughts. Congratulations on your continuing progress! ❤️

SeaJay! Well at least it’s raining and not “raining and then dropping to -10 C” turning everything into a skating rink…which is what’s happening in Nova Scotia. 😵‍💫 glad to hear there are some good days (as well as bad days… ) Progress is like that on pretty much everything, two steps forward one step back but it is progress! 🥰

Hi Houzzers! Just have great news to pass along. We finally got power restored about 5 pm after 5 days without. It’s been very difficult but we are happy for our pre-planning and preparations prior to Hurricane Beryl. Thanks for the well wishes and emotional support!! More after we restore and recover!

Believe me, I am so happy to be back! We are strong and in recovery with cleaning and reorganizing our stuff. A simple thing like unloading the cooler, turns into a need to clean out the refrigerator before reloading the frig! So takes double the time! I am sure grateful for my Houzz friends! Very comforting!!

Welcome back Flo!! 👏🥳❤️ so sorry you had to endure five days - too long!! 😭 I am currently overhearing the movie “Grease” playing outdoors with 10 giggling 16 or nearly 16 year olds for little K’s birthday 🥳 our baby girl is 16!! Can we even believe it?! We did a glow party so as it got dark the fluorescent colors started
Lighting up and they were amazed. Had face paint for them and they went crazy ! Made a cake that had glowing Isomalt pieces on it. I’ll post a pic. Not sure if I have it glowing though. Two graduations, packed Waldo for his trip to Europe, then Apollo joined him for a week, then 16th, sister comes in two days then we travel to Washington to see sister and mom the 24th, then Apollos 50th there! 😅 is this summer over yet???! Aaaackkkkk!!!

DD - here’s layout with bed head in front of single window on N side. (Ignore names on pieces- it’s just for sizes). You could make desk space anyway you want on the W wall. Just a little tight for chair at desk pushback. I put a pair of bookcases on the E wall with a bench to sit on for shoes etc. I put an armoire on S wall for clothes. The unit to the left of the desk could be a closet of somr sort.

  • last month

May could have a long desk like your looking at with chair under one end and the other end using it for bedside table with lamp, dual purpose. Book shelf above.

Option number for looks well balanced but feng shui doesn't like the bed on the North option two was nice too

Good thought Alice. Just have to know height of mattress and desk to make sure that works. Happy, good observation on Feng Shui!

  • last month

Yes smart thinking Flo, that bed could be too tall for a desk to work.

  • last month

Flo I noticed that as well. The old thread is back and the new one is gone either that or DD updated her avatar? I like the head of the bed on the north wall. It means when you walk in the room the bed doesn’t hit you in the face as being the primary thing. A desk in front of a window is always charming. I don’t understand the comments about the height of the desk and the height of the bed however. I don’t understand why those things have anything to do with each other.

  • last month

As far as the Feng Shui goes it seems to me it’s a tossup. The bed is facing south. And it’s not facing the open doorway. In a room this small you’re not going to get anything perfect.

  • last month

Oh the height of the bed vs desk came up Lia when I had the idea of using the desk as desk and a nightstand. Seems like there sure are many pieces to juggle mind wise in this room with the big bed.

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one looking all over for DD’s thread! Crazy!

Me too gls! Ok. Been thinking 🤔. Here’s a new twist on Miss K’s layout. The BIG new idea with Option 5 is to put her desk at foot of the bed! I put small stool or chair there but you could get a desk chair that doubles as a reading/guest chair (far left corner) to provide both options with minimal use of floor space. All the other furniture pieces are merely for basic sizing. It will all depend on budget and what we can find out in the markets! I think you can get a 48” wide x 24-48” desk which would be quite nice for laptop and papers and book or two. Enjoy.

Okay so NOW we have two threads? Will the real DD Deco thread please stand up!😂
