advice on how to sweat up this large two roomed living room.

I have various new pieces but wondering how to arrange andnif I possibly need to get a 2 seater couch to place in the open area. The room has one large bay window and a window from the back foot if the blind is open
Obviously the elliptical will go and dog toys obvi not aesthetically pleasing.
Thanks!

That’s coming along. Try putting the blue rug in front of gray futon. Then angle the other rug on top so it creates a more eclectic look. They need to overlap to make it look right.

Remove the wood and white chair if you can. Just too much furniture for the space.
What about one layered over the light rug where the couch is?

Target has lamp bases and shades sold separately so you can mix to get the height and look you want and are very budget friendly.
So I basically removed all the furniture as suggested..
So now the other stuff basically needs to find another spot is that what y’all mean?
Any ideas for the benches i sent
That’s basically what that is that suggested to move in
    a different color.

I would pair the turquoise chairs with the futon and layered rugs. there Is more space over on that side and the room is lighter /brighter light wise over there with the window. Then take the cream chair and angle it into the room with the sectional . Float it at an angle near the fireplace angled towards sectional. That side can use the lighter color of this piece to brighten it up. You can balance the lightness by getting lamps with cream shades behind the sofa and a large art piece for the wall to left of fireplace that has a light/cream back ground. Also light pillows and a throw on the dark sofa and some like pottery/candles on fireplace.

Do you have two of these lamps? I circled in yellow those could work behind sectional because of the rectangular shape. Are a light color to balance cream futon chair etc.

Let’s finish one side of the room and then move onto the other . For the fireplace side of the room.......as i said above thcould use some lightening up. Here is a sketch of furniture arrangement. Use suggestions i typed above. Lighten up that built in by accessorising it with whites and golds. Use hard cover books as well but turn them page side out so you get the page color and it will look uniform and brighten the shelves as well.

    Is this what you
    Meant?
Sorry I went to golf. Just saw ur sketch. Okay so the table should go in front of couch instead of ottoman?
I don’t have many gold and such things but thank you, I will start thinking of that when I see stuff to buy
  • 6 years ago
I don’t have two of those. I have the other white one
  • 6 years ago

Do you still have two of the dark wood round end tables?

Yes. And I have another gold one like that small one still in box
  • 6 years ago

Laurel there might be a privacy issue as to why you have the curtains drawn across the window like that. It would help the room greatly if you gathered one to each side of the window. Preferably I would say replace them with floor to ceiling white or off white panels stacked back on each side of window so that they only come past the casing on the inside of each panel but I know you want to work with whats in the room so put replacement of them on a future list and for now stack/gather the curtains you have up back if you can.

Drape the layered rug on top more at a diagonal angle across 1/3 of bottom blue rug.

You are getting there! Such improvement already! There is no need to have a chair in front of the built in. Since the sectional has a chaise on that side I would eliminate an additional chair at the foot of it. I thought you said you had two glass coffee tables? That is why I suggested you use the second at the sectional instead of the ottoman. IF you have two. maybe I misunderstood?

I think you are supposed to angle the top rug from the teal chair toward the desk chair.

Put the two c-tables together with the cream armless chair. Put the dark round tables at both ends of the sectional. Fold a throw the color of the blue chairs across the sectional chaise portion.

You are doing fine. Let’s stay in two rooms and get them as good as we can. Then we can go further. With that in mind a couple tips on styling book shelves and tables. 1/3 1/3 1/3 rule. 1/3 books arranged uniquely. Some flat with page sides facing out; 1/3 objects and 1/3 open space for the eye to rest. Group in sets of 3. You have some good pieces but when the shelves have too many items, it can look cluttered not styled. So remove all items and let’s restyle with those tips in mind. Bigger items low and each shelf different in spacing. For the sofa tables, use lamps like bookends. Then group 3 vases/pots grouped near base of lamp on far end of table. Tallest furthest away from eye. Then perhaps a stack of 3 books with small frame on top close to base of other lamp. The art glass vase on bookshelf would show up better on sofa table. Very pretty vase. Lighter colored books and items in dark bookcase. Gather similar colored pieces in your house to shop in house for similar colors to group items. Framed items hold for last. Usually better in bedrooms. Try these ideas when you get some time. When items are spread out, no item looks special so it helps to group like colors BUT all different heights. Big, 1/3 smaller and 1/3 smallest in each group. Can’t wait to see how you regroup!!

Wow! So much better and the sitting room (room with broken window) is looking great!! Isn't it amazing when you get things that you have arranged in a different, more effective manner, things really look amazing. The white chair/futon, back doesn't work in that position. BUT, it might be ok with a throw arranged over the back. I am not crazy about the bench in that area. Would that bench fit in the entry? Seems more appropriate for that spot?

Laurel i didn’t realize the back of the white futon chair isn’t finished. Scrap that chair there. I think that chair might be best suited for the corner of a bedroom. Also scrap the bench behind it. Try placing your other white chair there and seeing if that works. I believe it’s finished on all sides. Such improvement! Follow Flos rules for the book shelves. You have workable items and if done correctly can give you a great look.

Woof... I like the casually layered rugs cause of the bohemian in me I guess - it's not perfect, and can even be changed a bit when you want. :)

"... not straying too far from the familiar, but you have the freedom to freshen it as you see fit. Although transitional usually denotes a balance between contemporary and traditional, that’s not always the case. You can mix in a few (we repeat, a few) pieces from other styles as long as they don’t detract from the casual, tailored setting."

Flo would know! is this transitional..well idk for sure! :)

For instance, I like 2 lamps you have - nice lines to fit in about anywhere.

"transitional accents share a lack of ornamentation and have a certain purity of form. Artwork should be simply framed; lighting should have strong, clean lines. Be prepared: The less-is-more approach requires firm and judicious editing."

The both gray benches and the orangy pillows worked better back in the bedroom.

The way I describe “transitional” is the furnishings are basically traditional with twists of more modern lines to freshen look up. This situation is more what I call “eclectic”. An interesting mix of styles and colors but carefully put together for a very interesting, pleasing, inviting look.

With the current lamps, behind couch, what type of shade?
Or should i just get rid of them

Here is the photo from Flo up above with her suggestion of lamps. You can look for smaller lampshades for your current lamps. The current shades are too wide and it makes the lamps look cramped against the wall.

The room beside the fireplace room looks sooooo good! Hard to believe it is the same house! OK, about the lamps. You need rectangular shades either for those lamps or we need to try a different approach. You can try that white lamp you have with the rectangular shade on one end and then try putting a floor lamp on the end where there is the corner. I see you “grouped” some photos on a small table by the white chair. And put a throw over the white chair. How does that look from the back view? Are you gaining some confidence now and seeing with some changes you can vastly improve your home and not spend a dime! Don’t you love that?

Flo, you are da bomb! Laurel, eay to go, girl!
