Help: Family room furniture layout with off centered fireplace

Hi,

I need advice from the interior design community to suggest a good layout for this room. I just moved into this house a few months back. I loved the open floor plan of this house. But now I am not sure how to set up this family room for it to look cohesive.

The fireplace is placed so off center that no layout seems to look nice, The family room is our main tv watching room. It is also used during entertaining friends and family. Although I dont want TV to be the focus of the room, we do want to able to watch it comfortably from the sofa. Below are some pictures of the room the way I have currently set up. Please ignore the rugs in this position as i had placed them to see how they look in space.

Please advise.

This door leads to the formal living room.

The sectional faces the backyard now.

You have two focal points: the fireplace and the TV. I had the same problem in our home. I would move the TV to the wall to the right of the fireplace (where the small pictures are arranged) and then turn the couch toward the two focal points. The rest will fall into place. Good luck!

I think the TV is too wide to fit between the windows. I can't see moving it, but I would create two seating areas. Turn the sectional 180 degrees so it and the chaise are part of the fireplace seating. Then behind the sectional, place a grouping of 3 chairs for viewing TV. If you can find two more chairs to match the leather one, that would work well. The coffee and end tables are not working for this sofa. Consider new ones.

Would love to see what furniture pieces you have in the formal living room to possibly regroup?!

Thanks everyone for such wonderful ideas. I am planning to buy more furniture based on the final layout of this room. Below is a picture of other chairs I had placed earlier which I moved to living room.

We think there are two ways in which you might be able to rework this room. First off, if the TV can fit between the two windows beside the fireplace, we might try the TV there. If the TV won't fit there, then we would create two seating areas. Here are some designs of ours which might help you envision it. Note here the TV is on the wall, so if you could place the TV in between the windows you would turn the sectional to face the TV/fireplace area.

If that doesn't work you could place 4 chairs around an ottoman in front of the fireplace and keep your current set up in front of the TV.

Thank you for your suggestion. TV will fit between the windows, but the sectional has a right arm chaise, which will end up in the middle of the room. I'll try to make another set up in front of the fireplace.

What about trying your two chairs at the fireplace, either flanking it or facing each other over a chess/checkers table? Angle the chaise with a floor lamp by the column and under the art near the wine fridge. Leave the sectional as is, but place a sofa table with some decor items on it behind. That gives the fireplace area some function; reading corner, game area, and the sofa table can turn into a bar table for parties with mixers, liquor and ice (all on trays to save the table top.)

    Hello.

Im not sad about two areas, but it doesnt really work here as the room is more square than long.

I am sad about the rug.

No mater what try to either have one massive rug or two identical rugs you can seem together.

So have you thought to put the dining table in front of the fireplace area rather than in the spot is is now?

Add bar stools to that area, and make the dining room in the fireplace area.

Soften the sofa by adding a throw, and perhaps moving it forward a bit, to add a sofa table.

then add back in those two smaller arm chairs.

The rug in front of the fireplace is too large. It looks like there is missing furniture and is too close to the sectional. If you want to keep two areas, then put a smaller rug in front of the firepace with two comfortable chairs facing the fireplace with an ottoman and small table between them. The best way to really get a better layout is to measure the room, furniture and do a layout or hire a designer to do the layout for you. Its worth a few hours of a professional's time to imporve your space.

The fireplace isn’t “off-center”, it iis the sectional which encroaching on that area.

The rugs have been explained and so are not being taken into account yet.

Thank you for all your suggestions! All were great ideas! So this is what Im going to try. Leave the current setup in front of the TV and just bring the sofa in a bit more to make space for sofa table and then creating another seating area with 2 chairs flanking the fireplace. Also move the chaise near the bar with a floor lamp. Perfect!

One last question, should i place a small rug in front of the fireplace area( maybe a round one) or leave it?

Leave it open. Too much going on.

No more rugs than needed here. they will only visually break up the space.

Made a lot of changes since then. I might swap out swing with a wing chair and a side table next.

Looks so much improved! I'd say you could bring your furniture (chairs definitely) off the walls so they don't look so pressed out against the perimeter. But if you're like my husband (he has to have furniture against the walls or he feels anxiety) then, leave it!

Yes just the chairs sorry. The couch looks like it's the right amount of far away even though it's pressed up against the columns. I love this room now!

Yes, But agree I would pull the chairs in too if it was a separate room. but this is an open layout with family dinette and kitchen together. So we need the space between couch and chairs for easy and quick access to couch
