Top for a kitchen Island

I had new cabinets and countertops install and the installer wanted to charge more for the project. So, I decided to wait on the island and maybe do something less expensive and different. Now im Wondering if that was a good idea. (And the installer did a horrible job on my countertop seams.) should I get someone else and do the island to match the countertops or do something different like wood or concrete on the island? Thanks for your help.
