Need help with a low budget kitchen reno (photos included)

Hey all,

so last year my husband and I decided to paint our 1950's knotty pine kitchen cabinets. We originally wanted it white but we went for a dark espresso color. We added a new counter top, back splash.. it made our kitchen look better but we didn't finish it and it has been in a "stand by" ever since.

Long story short, we're working back at it now and decided to paint it white. We got a bucket of Oil based Kilz and applied one coat to part of the kitchen cabinets to test it out (that's why you see a part of it white, that's the kilz not the actual paint color).

I choose Behr's Ultra White paint, not sure if that's too white? But, my kitchen is pretty small, perhaps that will allow it to look bigger?

Now.. I really feel like just no matter how many paint upgrades we do the kitchen will always have this odd look. I feel like changing the cabinet doors? Sort of just want the regular shaker style.

We're on a low budget, so everything is being done by ourselves. I want to tell my husband a few ideas I had in mind but, wanted to run it by you guys first:

1. Maybe remove the top and bottom kitchen cabinet doors (8 in total), leave the kitchen cabinet box and purchase unfinished cabinet doors and paint them the same color white? Or buy assembled kitchen cabinets at least for the top part? Not sure which would be better or cheaper.

2. Remove those big hinges on those cabinet doors! No idea why we choose those.

3. We have a new black dishwasher that will be replaced.

4. Paint the kitchen door

any other advice, changes etc.. please feel free to comment. Thank you!

You've got a great start with your counter and backsplash and floor. Honestly, I would change out the hinges and just paint what you have. It's minimal $$ and if you still can't live with it you could then try new doors. It's a bit of work/labor that would be wasted if you decided to do that, but I think it's worth a try.

Are you saying you're replacing the white dw with black? With white cabinets, I'd stay with white appliances, if that's an option - at least the dw, since I see the black refer and range.

    Thank you Olychick,

that was our first thought just paint the current doors. I don't necessarily dislike the current doors, I do like that they have this 'farmhouse' look to it. Just not so sure how it would look in white. Or you know what.. maybe it's those hinges that are making me want to change the doors. those are definitely going away lol.

The current dishwasher came with the house, it has this yellowish tone to it due to age. Since all my current appliances are black, felt that having that one appliance in a different color maybe makes the kitchen look a little off, so was considering just adding the new black dw

Does anyone know what these type of kitchen cabinet doors are called? I want to say barn doors, but don't think so..I think I only ever saw them once online, but they are rare to me forgot what style

I know you're on a low budget, but pick better paint than the Behr - it will not hold up for kitchen cabinets. BM Advance, SW Emerald Urethane, General Finishes, any of those are better choices. And use a good primer (BIN Shellac). All the work you will be doing, you may as well not bother if you use crappy paint.

    Wiscokid,

thank you for pointing that out! I actually just choose Behr out of a quick pick, luckily I haven't opened it yet. I'll consider looking at other brands such as BM Advance.

I can see wanting the appliances to match, but with that one small wall of cabinets it seems like having a dw closer to the color of the cabinets might be better. It will blend in instead of becoming a black hole in the short run of cabinets. SS would even work, not quite as high contrast as black.

I would call your cabinets rustic, but not sure if there is a specific name for the door style.

    • The white/off white, will definitely brighten it up. I think that's a good idea for a smaller kitchen.
    • Change out your ceiling light fixture. No offence, but it's also dating your kitchen.
    • I'd change out those doors. Some form of flat panel. I have one which is not Shaker but close. See Here. Instead of a simple flat shaker, the inside of the frame is chamfered or beveled. I'm sure you'd be able to find something similar around you.
    • I see some sort of moulding on the bulk head, but it needs more. Something larger. Consider adding a larger cove or an angled crown to it. Either will go with the flat-panel door style.
    • Definitely, needs different hinges.
    • I think it would be better to have your DW in the SS. Every other appliance is black or SS. White wouldn't be out of place with a white kitchen, but since you have the others already, I wouldn't go white.

    Olychick,

Ah I see what you mean by blending in instead of a black hole. That does makes sense. The only thing I don't like so much about this dw is the color tone it's getting yellowish..unless I can paint it or use something to clean it/make it brighter.

Yeah, this style of doors are very rare to me. I remember finding a similar kitchen in a blog but that was ages ago. I'm also thinking rustic, barn doors .. but even then they're hard to find.

    Design Loft,

thank you so much for your feedback! I agree about the ceiling light fixture, going to consider changing it but sure which style would look best yet in this kitchen but I'm searching.

A flat panel was something I was leaning towards. Just something simple and flat. I'm going to check some prices but after talking to my husband it seems like he doesn't want to add new doors because he feels in about two years he's going to tear the kitchen down and start brand new .. even if I don't change the doors though, those hinges are out.

I also thought about the molding, I think it will add a lot of detail. Do you think it would still look fine if I were to stay with the current door style? Or would that be too much?

I found a similar knotty pine kitchen renovation, from Vintage Refined blog and it doesn't look too bad in white definitely makes a small kitchen look brighter and bigger. Since it seems that my husband may want to stick with the current doors, I'll just make sure those hinges are changed would prefer the hidden European style (if possible, if not i'd go smaller).

I like your doors! I think they’ll be very farmhouse and cute painted white. One note in addition to choosing a higher quality paint... I see you’re painting the cabs while still on the hinges. I would strongly recommend taking them off the hinges and removing them to get a better paint job. Then do white appliances to match.

I was just about to share the kitchen from the Vintage Refined blog! Here's another knotty pine painted kitchen--its from a real estate listing in my area and I think it's great. It's not the white you're looking for but I think it does show what a difference new hardware makes.

Thank you Bri Bosh and Teeda,

Giving a good look to the kitchen, I can definitely say it's not so much the doors that were getting to me it was those hinges! I do feel replacing them would make a huge difference along with painting the kitchen white. I actually like the whole farmhouse, rustic, cottage style so the doors would be a great fit and allow to remain under budget meanwhile.

I won't be able to change out appliances at the moment as I don't have $ to buy new white appliances, so just going to have to make it work with the current ones. Husband wants to keep this as low budget as possible because he says in two years or less he feels he's going to just take the whole kitchen down and start with a fresh new kitchen ...sigh so I guess this is just a little makeover to have something completed, compared to our 'half way done previous work.

I love your kitchen! I'd paint the cabinets white and spray the hinges black, or buy new ones if that's possible. Paint your door black. Ignore your DW for now but when it goes, replace it with a SS model. It will look bright and blends with everything. Then add an accent color with pots, towels, etc., maybe a brick red?? It will be smashing!!

So far this is what I have listed to do:

    Kitchen Cabinets:

    - Paint kitchen cabinets/trims white

    - Replace kitchen hinges/hardware

    Lighting:

    - Replace ceiling light fixture and maybe the light fixture near the window

Any ideas of types that would look nice in this kitchen?

    Painting:

    - Paint the kitchen walls white to make the kitchen look even brighter and appear bigger?

Or should I consider a soft yellow to add a pop of color? The dining room is right next to the kitchen, which I will be painting a wall in soft yellow.

    - What color should I paint the kitchen door?

I wanted to say white, but not sure if I should consider a different color?

    Additional:

I was thinking of adding two open shelves right next to the stove?

I have minimal kitchen storage space, I normally add all my extra things up stairs in the attic. I wanted to think of a way to add a small pantry or something where I can store things with out making the kitchen look crowded.. but not sure if that's too much.

    Thank you jjam! :)

Great idea about adding accent color with different items. That's what I love about white kitchens, it's a blank canvas but even the slightest red, blue towel will give it that fresh pop of color! I'll see if I can find a cheap SS dishwasher, I personally don't even use ds only use it for storage hehe! I do have that brand new black ds, but for the sake of blend I'm going to search just in case I'm able to find a ss

    last modified: 6 years ago

This is going to sound crazy.. but if it cost less, I think I can even just replace the door/front panel to the black ds to ss? They even have a brushed stainless dishwasher cover, lol didn't even know that existed. Again, I never use the dishwasher so this would just be to give it that stainless steel look. I'd have to look into that though.

    Yes, I do.

    Either of these will work.

If you have a plan to tear out in a year or 2, I'd say there's no use spending $$ on new doors. Save that money for the new kitchen. When it comes time to reno that kitchen, do see a Kitchen Designer. Your small space will need someone who knows planning for small spaces.

If you really think you're going to demo the kitchen in 2 years, ignore my comment, but: I think adding a simple crown molding to all of the walls and cabinets will make for an excellent improvement, taking away the dark lines where the walls and ceiling meet and at the same time adding an aspect of 'finished' to the overall look. Can't wait to see the end result whatever you decide!

I love those trims for the kitchen cabinet and do agree that would give it more detail.

Yes, we decided to save the money stay with the current doors and just put some money into our bathroom which is completely outdated and also save for that future kitchen reno in the upcoming years.

    Thank you, Emily!

Oh! I agree! I would love to add crown moldings to the walls and cabinets,I've had this itch to do so. Since, we're not replacing the doors or buying new appliances. I have some spare money to add to the kitchen.. I'm wondering about how much it would cost to add these trims. I just want a finish kitchen for the holidays :D

I will definitely add photos once it's all done

    **Question about buying kitchen cabinets**

If I was to replace the kitchen cabinets completely instead of refacing (since the current cabinets base aren't in the best condition either way)

Can anyone recommend base cabinets from either Home Depot or Lowes?

I know the unfinished ones cheaper, but I checked all and they don't seem too bad really seems that I can probably replace the top and sink base for less than $2000 or am I wrong?

For new cabinets, use IKEA. They are inexpensive, frameless (so you'll get more storage out of the same space), and they use Blum hardware--which is fantastic. Additionally, you can design your kitchen using their easy software (right from the website), and find out exactly what it will cost. Go with all drawers for your lowers.

Definitely IKEA! My first impression was that you could benefit from a new layout most of all. What connection is on the right side of the room near the back door?

Which ever company you use, I still strongly advise to consult a KD. Using an on-line planner and knowing how to plan for the space are 2 different things. Small kitchens & rather large kitchens can be very difficult to plan for functionality & flow.

Thank you all very much, I really appreciate it all your feedback have been real helpful to my fellow indecisive self!

The connection from the rear door leads directly to the dining room.

I haven't been to Ikea in ages because I moved and no longer have one in my area so it's many hours away road trip just to get there but I'll look into it. Reason I mentioned buying new cabinets, is because my husband now mentioned tearing the kitchen apart towards the end of this year (or whenever we're done with our outdated bathroom first - so don't be surprised if I post a bathroom thread anytime soon)

He says that gives us enough time to save money, come up with a layout, plan etc.. had I know that I would have just stayed with the kitchen as is, but he still wants to do a quick makeover paint it white meanwhile so I can have a white kitchen in the summer. lol sigh.

There is no such thing as a "quick makeover paint". Painting your own cabinets (properly so it lasts more than a couple of weeks without peeling/chipping) takes hours upon hours of prep work - which if you are planning on ripping the whole thing out in less than 12 months would be crazy, imho. But, it's your crazy, so ymmv.....

I agree, that's talking crazy! We were just discussing this today and trying to figure out if to work on the kitchen or bathroom first. But, considering he's going to tear the kitchen down either way, trying to see all options.

Whether it's paint the cabinets then wait to completely reno or create a layout discuss it with a kd/build cabinets from scratch and buy the doors etc. Not sure what's going to happen with this kitchen just yet to be honest, but all feedback was helpful in allowing me to fetch different ideas.

I'm playing around the Ikea Home Planner, it's awesome. Thinking of a layout for now just to have that ready. After discussing all the ideas with you all, I've realized this will all take time to be done right in the end. I'll keep you guys updated though! Thank you!

I agree...don't do anything else until you've at least come up with an IKEA plan that works for you and you price it out.

The boxes have a 25 years warranty and they're super easy to put up (the uppers go on a rail so if you can use a level, you'll be fine. Me and my 83 year old dad did their kitchen, no problems.

The most difficult think is coming up with a plan, imho. Even that's kind of fun.

ETA, I very much like the way their butcher block counters look...with the right finish on them they seem to be fine around the sink..

Any chance of hubs getting rid of the window to the right of the door? You would have room for one of their lovely pantrys there.

Also--I would opt for the kitchen to be done first, if given a choice between that and the bathroom :)

I spend a lot more time in the kitchen and I would be in a much better frame of mind to continue the reno...

I never recommend using plastic to pay for stuff, but they do have a new credit card that gives 5% cash back for Ikea purchases. Of course check the fine print as it's pretty new and that's all I know about it.

Also, if you show your "family" card (a free card like your local grocery card), then, as a member, you'll have their 90 day price protection. If you don't happen to catch the kitchen on sale (3-ish times a year) then you can still get the price adjustment if you just miss it, or if it comes up just after your purchase.

Painting kitchen cabinets is straight forward DIY, and less than $100.

I painted my own kitchen cabinets myself over one weekend and a week of weeknights.

If your floor plan and space make it impossible to move much of anything (or if you decide not to, if the wall next to the stove is an interior wall, you could look into a between stud tall cabinet there, even sticking out a few inches if that wouldn't interfere with the cabinets.

    Thank you pennydesign,

I agree coming up with a plan is difficult and fun all in one.

That's a good idea for a pantry display, didn't think about that! The only thing is

I'm a sucker for windows and natural light, as much as I would love a pantry (if I didn't have extra cabinets, such as now) I would prefer the window over the pantry :D

If I had to choose my first choice would also be the kitchen, although I know the bathroom would be a faster and cheaper reno compared to the kitchen. My bathroom is very small, even then due to the current stage it is is now it would still be some work just not as much as the kitchen.

That card you mentioned sounds decent considering they also give cash back! I so wish I had an Ikea in my area now.

    Olychick,

That's a great idea for a pantry, if my kitchen was to stay as is now, I was also thinking of adding a pantry in that section. I was gathering ideas with my husband about a layout plan if we were to tear down the kitchen.

If so, we will definitely add more cabinets, with more cabinets then I wouldn't necessarily need a pantry as I would already have more storage space, compared to now.

In that section that you mentioned where the pantry could be placed, we thought about connecting the counter top and either adding a lazy susan on bottom cabinets, then connecting the counter top all the way around sort of like an "L"shape extending to a small bar area in that case the stove will most likely stay where it is at now and the refrigerator would be moved far right next to the window where the sink is at. Don't know if that sounds confusing, but I'm designing the layout in Ikea Home Planner to get a better visual. :)

Hey all, so we decided to work on the kitchen first! The old floor which was sheet vinyl is officially out, and the new tiles have been installed (photos included showing work in progress). Due to lighting the colors vary but the tiles are called Marazzi VitaElegante Crema, which is a cream color with warm, brown veining.

Husband and I are trying to decide on cabinet colors. We took white cabinets out of the options (I know white was my first choice, considering my kitchen is small and it would make it appear bigger and brighter) but we're building cabinets from scratch and decided to go with a wood stain instead.

Based on these tiles, which color cabinets, counter top and back splash do you all think would go well? I don't want to go too dark because my kitchen is small. I'm between a cherry wood color cabinet and perhaps a light stone brick back splash?

This is the hardwood floor all around the house, could probably even go a similar color to that as well for cabinets (?)

Do you have a layout? I think the very best thing you can do is to sketch an accurate plan of the space and start a new post in the Kitchens forum.

There are really so many talented people that have really good ideas (especially since you have restrictions with the window)....

You might already have a plan, but there might be things you haven't thought of to take into consideration.

Start with that and then when that's finalized you can consider the aesthetics.
