Some polypropylene ones look darn good (and I am a bit of a rug snob.)

I got a Dash and Albert rug that has cotton in it and it shows grease and every little thing. It is washable but I would be washing it all the time. It is stored in the garage now :-(.

I use hand knotted wool runners. They have been used for centuries in all types of rooms. Last week I dripped some balsamic vinegar on my wool runner with a cream background and it came right off with a damp paper towel. Every couple of years (or when it looks dirty) I will drop it off at a rug dealer for cleaning. I've had it down for 6 months and that was the first time I spilled something on it, so I never understand when people say how dirty their kitchens are.

Anything that could be scrunched up and fit in my washing machine won't be thick or solid enough for me. I like rugs to be thick and have some weight to them.
