There are info pages on houzz that will give dimensions and advice on hanging a chandelier.....check them out, or try YouTube. My only clues are should be double the longest wall, in inches...if dining room is 12 feet long, the chandelier should be minimum twice that number but in inches.....second, is if ceiling is 8 feet, chandelier bottom should be between 30-36 inches above the table. For every additional foot go up three inches.....but correct Houzzers if i am amiss on this number.

thanks! Its the high ceiling part that confounds me. The chandeliers sized to table or just dining room in open plan look tiny when viewed from second story. Counters installed today so some progress!

My dining room ceiling is 16 feet high and my dinging room table is 43x96. I went with two chandeliers. As for hanging height, I did the math that Susan mentioned and added the 3 inches for every foot above 8. It worked for some fixtures but not for others, I recommend either being there when lights are actually hung or doing mock ups before.
