Should stain be light or dark with dark counter top?

I have chosen the granite in the picture for our guest bathroom, and now I'm struggling with choosing a stain for the cabinet. The darker stain looks better to my eye with the granite (the other one has too much red in it), but I'm concerned that the overall look will just be too dark! Which makes me want to go with the lighter stain. The wood species is knotty alder but sure wouldn't have to be. Is this granite just not meant to go with stained wood and I should maybe paint the cabinet instead? I am looking for ALL input that you can provide. Thanks in advance!
