Grey, Beige or Color?? Help pls

last modified: 6 years ago

Hallo! We need your opinion. Apparently, it’s been 10 years since we last painted!! We’d like to paint the kitchen,

family (keeping the feature wall) and possibly the entryway. We would love color ideas to update. I would like to keep the dark green wall and pair it with either a light, Ben Moore grey owl, pale oak or natural cream or something like palladium blue. We’re debating repainting the entry/hallway as it’s a bit of a job. Many thanks!

Thinking the same as houssaon. I'd put my money and energy elsewhere if I were you. :)

Unless the paint is dingy or worn, which I can’t see, I agree that it would be better to spend your money on other things. On my list would be lighting, especially getting rid of the fan (or if you must have it for temperature regulation, then updating to a more modern fan) and replacing the boob light flush mounts I see.

If you like the green, continue it in all the other spaces you want to paint. Amen to replacing the boob lights. Semi-flush would be better.

What? You don’t like the lights?! We just installed them. :) kidding. We haven’t updated those lights or the fan because I can‘t find a good looking fan that suits the space. Will look for lighting next.

The paint is in good shape, but a little scuffed in the kitchen.

Agree that in photos the paint looks lovely, but we’re not seeing it in person. I’m posting only because I have BM natural cream throughout my home, and will be happy to share insights if it becomes a finalist.

I have BM natural cream in my upstairs rooms and it is a perfect color!

    Thanks! The colors are

lovely right now, it’s just that we need a change. Natural cream is on our short list. :)

Well, if it’s on the short list I’ll share my experience with natural cream and see if it matches Sandra’s. But we went from oak trim and mid-tone walls that didn’t always evolve cohesively to white trim and natural cream. Quite a change for me, but less so for you. My rooms are all either southern or northern exposures, and floors are medium to dark similar to yours. I never find it reads yellow, but in some lights it has the very slightest green undertone as creams can be prone to do. In the northern rooms it can sometimes read towards the palest griege. It reads fresh with just the tiniest bit of being grayed out. Good contrast with my bright white trim, and in a kitchen with soft white cabinets it gives a nice look of layered whites. It was one of the few light neutrals that didn’t turn mauve or fleshy in my particular house. But orangey woods (which you don’t appear to have) can turn it quite green. Good luck with your choice. My husband couldn’t understand why I was stressing over “white” walls until I asked him which of BM’s 200+ whites was “the one”!

My upstairs has two bedrooms with a good size landing area in the middle used as an office, once a den for my Son. The two bedrooms have carpet. The landing has a gun stock stained wood...redish orange. My trim is painted white, so I didn’t have any of those issues that Lisa had. Each bedroom has three windows and the office just one with white plantation shutters. No drapes or window treatments at the time. When I first painted a small area to sample it had a much more grey tone than it does now that everything has been painted. It is just a fresh, clean, neutral color for me. I’d say cream like the name indicates. I really love it. And when the time comes, I’m pretty sure the down stairs will get the same color. Here is a photo of each of those rooms. Hope it helps.

Your home is beautiful Sandra. Thanks for sharing pictires. :) Natural cream looks very soothing in the bedrooms. I like it. Like Lisa mentioned, I‘d like something fresh and we don’t mind if if’s a bit grey or green. The pale oak or other off whites/ Greiges that we like have red /purple under tones which makes me hesitan. Ah!! So many choices!

I find that green feature wall awesome why not just do all the walls that color for a nice neutral change.

Thank you kiscunika. The paint is the hardest part of any decorating project. I don’t know how I stumbled upon the natural cream. I painted the middle room when it was empty and transiting from den to office. Once I saw it in the room, I knew I wanted it for the remainder of the up stairs. Maybe you should start with one room or wall and see how you feel. I am of the mindset that I need to see it in the entire space, or room to really tell how it looks. Personally, from the pictures you’ve posted, I think it will be a good match for your tile. Good luck.

I love it when a you find a color and it’s so inspirational! Sandra & Lisa, I think you’re right about the natural cream it works especially knowing that we have the same exposure at Lisa. Hubby says he would be happy if we went w something grayish or an “actual” color. Honestly, it’s easier to go light shopping :)

Patricia, thanks for your idea! We like the green but that’s an old foto.. It seems I didn’t add a image of the newly updated feature wall. It’s quite dark and our family room and kitchen share a wall which means we’d have to paint the kitchen Boreal Forest AF-480. That’s a too bold me.

Like Sandra, for me it was the perfect color that never had weird undertones anywhere in the house. The color can shift but it looks good everywhere. I had the same issue with the purple undertones and one griege room actually turned mauve. We had the downstairs painted and liked it so much we told the painter to continue upstairs. And I should have said that my green issue occurred in a small upstairs hallway with six orangey doors. Once painted white the green went away. No issue with orange or red furniture. Good luck with your choice.

Lisa, the lighting in your home sounds just like our and you can see we have a lot of orange. Glad to hear that this works!!

Thanks Judy. I can’t seem to post any additional pix to my question., We repainted the LR accent wall boreal forest af 480. That would brightened up the place w WB and make a bigger change for our eyes. Do you think the color combo is ok? We also like palladiun blue. thanks!

Here is what we have for the accent wall.. :-)

Sandra Grimsley & Lisa Sw I would love to see more photos of Natural cream in your space if you have any! I am choosing between it, edgecomb gray and elmira white for my home that has a lot of orange oak wood tones. thank you so so much!
