HELP!!! Ugly 1950's Exterior Lava Rock and Brick. Need Advice!

Hello! I purchased this house a couple of years ago and just absolutely hate the exterior of my home. I don't even know where to begin when it comes to making it look better. I don't think removing the rock is possible because it is stuck on there with cement. Any advice on colors that would look good or what else I could do to make the exterior look better?? I am aware I need to do some landscaping and have started that already. Thank you!

Are the shutters on top of the stone or embedded?

Here are some examples of painted stone to encourage you to paint it. Just be sure you get the right kind of paint for such an application. Paint rock and brick the same.

They're embedded into the stone. Anyone have any colors that would look good if I were to paint the stone and brick?

Your roof shingles look new? And Grey? I'd base a scheme off those. But not-a-pro. :)

I trot this out a bit, but it's a 1950's era approved color scheme chart for ranch homes - maybe something here will appeal.

Use Romabio mineral paint in an off white like Greek Villa or Shoji white. I'd be tempted to try the shutters in the same white but that might a little 'out there' for some people. If not white, then think about doing the shutters in a gray like the roof just a few shades darker.

I kind of like your house. Alternative to painting:

    --Off with the shutters

--Get a bright blue or orange door and storm door

--Get a new stone walkway that also echoes the rock facing

--Create garden beds on both sides of the front of the house and work with a local nursery for plantings--shrubs, perennials, rocks, etc. so that it echoes the rocks on the house--something like this but with native plantings.

Removing the rock is not a big deal. I'd start there. What does the rest of the house look like?

Remove the shutters, stucco over the rock, and paint the brick.

Do not even hesitate. Paint it!

Whitewashing will look softer that painting it, especially if you do it lightly

I think you should investigate removing the rock. I would take PPF. word for it that it is not a big deal. It looks to me that it was added after the house was built. If you don't think you can do it. Get a few masons out for estimates. After the rock is removed I'd paint the new surface and leave the brick alone - it looks fine.

One other thing you should think about down the line is removing the large spruce right next to the house.

Ohhhhhhhh no! I love the tree!

I would get estimates to remove it.

The best thing to do is remove the rock off of the home because it is a very dated look, and replace it with some premium siding. It's such a small square footage area, it shouldn't take too large of a budget to accomplish but it will add a massive facelift to your home, curb appeal and you should see a good ROI on this renovation. Add white trim boards for corners, window frames, door frames, a new front door, and new shutters. If you are looking for any more professional advice, design and renderings we'd be glad to assist. There's a lot of potential there.

+1 on the feasibility of removing the rock. We've done it, it's not that hard. On that era of home it's even possible that it's concrete block construction all the way up to the top plate. which makes it even easier.

Check out ‘should we change the brick’ in design dilemma. Everyone was telling the original poster to make a lot of architectural changes but she made the front of her house look amazing by mostly just changing the colors

Someone with the right power towels can remove it quite easily. I assume it is just at the front of the house. https://homeguides.sfgate.com/removing-rock-facade-house-41428.html

I don’t mind the rocks or the brick or the shutters or the tree! I think you should find a wonderful new front door. It will immediately improve and update the look of the house.

Those white painted rocks in the pics above make the house look like its made of marshmallow fluff! Not a good look.

OP, Im willing to bet that those rocks are on the front only, am I right? Usually I argue in favor of saving original house parts but i have to say, the 50s thing for attaching fake rocks or brick veneer to the front only (like we cant see the sides??) is really annoying. Take it off! (Be sure to post after pics).

Glad the tree is staying. Its not that close, and looks to be in good shape - a good tree adds value to a house. When the time comes redoing your front beds and adding a snazzy new door will add much more appeal.

Please post the after. Glad you are going to get rid of the rock.
