What's missing in my living room? Help me put the finishing touch!

Hi everyone,

I'd love your help to improve my living room!

General context: it's open to the kitchen. The room is a medium sized rectangle, about 14 feet wide (that wall with the windows). No direct sunlight, except perhaps a few rays very early morning. Our wood floors are a nice mahogany.

Furniture: we have to keep the couch, rug and the tv bench for now (all from ikea). We may get a bigger TV (now 32"), which we'd probably want to put up on the wall. Regarding the couch, I was thinking of changing one piece for a meridienne on the right side of the couch (against the window).

Lighting: we hate the white Ikea ceiling fixture.

DILEMMA: What's missing to pull the room together? I feel like it's too "flat" or "angular".

Some options I've thought about:

***A coffee table, but what shape and size?

Considerations are:

- it needs to be moved easily, ideally gliding on the rug (we sometimes like to watch tv on the floor)

- extra seating would be nice, so hybrid seat/table?

***Gallery wall behind/around the TV?

***Adding a meridienne to the couch?

***New light fixture?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Michelle

I like it so far! I agree you definitely need a bigger tv and mounted on the wall. You could go a couple different ways with a coffee table but I’d think about a rectangular table with a natural wood look maybe?

Thanks for your feedback! I like your idea about a wood look for the table. The Ikea tv bench already adds a lot of white, I think I'd prefer a warmer tone :)

Art to go over the couch.

I agree, a gallery wall and a super large painting over the couch. Your room looks very nice already and the art will add what's missing now.

Art over sofa and maybe a small coffee table. Looks great to me!

I don't know that you want a cool hat hanging on top of the guitar; but, if the guitar is a part of your life/enjoyment, provide a good hangar for it between the two windows (if that is an amp below it) or, perhaps, to the left of the TV with two coordinating pics hung one over the other (or one narrow vertical pic) on the right side of the TV.

I believe the Houzz experts (and I am NOT one!) suggest the TV be 2/3 the width of the TV cabinet. Maybe that will give you an idea what size TV to consider. Keep in mind that the TV size (i.e. a 42" tv) is NOT the actual width of the TV but the diagonal width of the screen.

And, yes, I think you'd enjoy something large hung on the wall behind the sofa -- something that makes you smile/relax/invites you and loved ones "to sit a spell." It could be a large piece of art or a quilt from your great-grandmother, whatever suits YOU in that space -- maybe a large photographic or graphic arts skyline of your city. At first glance, the only thing I see that looks warm and inviting in that space is the guitar. It's true (and obvious) that I'm a music person and I love color! :)

I'd love to give that ceiling a hint of color (powder pink, vintage blue) :)

But something large map/artwork/poster above your sofa would look great!

Mount your tv on that wall and hang multiple frames around it, turn it into a picture wall!

Round ceiling lamp. Solid wood stools, flat top, doubles as seating.

And at least one bigger plant. ;)

Ha, agreed! On the plant suggestion, any that come to mind in particular? Especially considering the no direct sunlight... I've brought bigger plants in before but the scale was just off. But the ones I have are just very small... need a middle ground I guess!

@Vicky B: It's kind of a crap guitar but my boyfriend likes to have it around. It was his first guitar as a kid!

I'm trying the guitar on the wall thing (see pics). What do you think about these looks? I think I prefer next to the TV rather than between the two windows because that space is a bit cramped and the light is better on the other wall. Problem is, if we put a bigger TV, it might not fit as well anymore.

Regarding the between-the-windows option, the curtains are currently installed very wide – Houzz advice – but I could move them to make more space for the guitar (see 2nd pic – moving the curtains might make that option more appealing, could also add a picture light and it wouldn't be a problem with a bigger tv).

You don't need to go out and buy a bigger TV. Just integrate it into a wall of art. Who wants a big black blob taking up space anyway. I love the idea of mounting instruments on the wall, particularly in a small space. I might borrow it for my family room. Currently my guitar is on a stand in front of the fireplace but I worry that the heat isn't good for it, we use it a lot in the winter.

Regarding the ceiling lamp, do you think these could work in black?

Someone said: I believe the Houzz experts (and I am NOT one!) suggest the TV be 2/3 the width of the TV cabinet.

No no no no no. The TV cabinet needs to be at least 25% wider than the TV. Wider is always better. There is no minimum size for the TV.

Do not hang that guitar between the windows. Do not hang anything between the windows. Your curtains are perfect. Hang the guitar on the wall just left of the TV, get some art for over the sofa, and add just a touch more red to echo the arc lamp (which is tres cool, BTW).

You've done a great job so far. You've got this.

Your bar chairs with their splayed design are crowding the hallway which it appears you are using for storage. I'd sell those and get some with straight legs that don't take up so much room. What kind of instrument is in that case in the hall? Perhaps both that and the guitar can be hung above the sofa.

TV doesn't need to be bigger than 36". You could add top down bottom up cellular shades in a light wood/sand color (but keep the drapes, they're lovely). Flush mount ceiling light, starburst or the most simple frosted glass you can find (since it's merely functional lighting). Prayer plant (because some red in there) or peacock plant: https://lajollamom.com/indoor-house-plants-shade-container-gardening/ And some pillows with color in them (again some red/orange)

Ikea Stockholm get's my vote too. But I also like Skogsta (image from the dutch ikea website).

I would go for a pouf! For sure (like this one https://www.myswankyhome.com/bohemian-pouf/)

Wall art or a lick of paint. Maybe some staggered tables, nothing too overwhelming.
