Area Rug over wall-to-wall carpeting???? Suggestions Please!

I have wall to wall carpeting in my 16'6"x 13'5" living room. I would much prefer to have a wooden floor but this is what we have and for the moment its practical and we wont be changing it right now (for insulation and soundproofing as we have a downstairs tenant).

I love the kind of Californian Boho style: white walls, lots of light colours with a few pops of colour, natural textures and wood accents. But its kind of hard to have that look with the kind of carpeting we have. I'm thinking about an area rug to ground our sitting area and cover the carpet a bit. I have been looking for a vintage oriental style rug but its hard to find one in the right size and colour that I can afford and maybe more neutral rug would be better?

any suggestions would be appreciated. Its a bit difficult to photograph room but the collage should give you an idea of our current carpet, we will be adding a few more pieces of furniture later (a wardrobe shelving etc).

so what do your think? should I keep hunting for the elusive affordable perfect oriental rug?

forget about an area rug all together?

get a neutral rug?

any suggestions on where I could get a decent rug on a budget?

I think an area rug would be fine. I have a lot of luck finding rugs online on the Home Depot site. The plus is that, if you hate it, you can return it to the store, instead of having to ship it back.

Save the money on the rug and invest in furniture/accessories that you need instead. You can get the CA boho style with a rustic wood coffee table and some large pillows for your sofa made of antique rugs, or a great throw for the back of the sofa. Find a slipcover to replace the sheet, or shop at consignment stores for affordable furniture. Add a large plant to your ledge by the window.

The collage really doesn't help. Please post actual photos of the room from all angles. From the little I can see, the most interesting thing in your room is the dog. (Being a dog myself, of course I would think that.)

I had a very similar looking room with a very similar looking carpet and even the tile at the entry way. A rug would work over the wall to wall carpeting. DO NOT get a cheap polyester one, get a good natural fiber one. I got a great deal on a wool Persian style rug, but a woven wool or heavy cotton one would work too. Not sure about something like sisal, those were out of my price range. Otherwise a cheap olefin/polypro. one like they sell in discount stores will curl on the ends and really, really not stay put and eventually set itself in a non-flat shape you won't be able to hang/stretch back out. I started with one like that, hated it. Have a small area one like that now over our carpet, hate it again. As it is, prepare for constant rug creep no matter what, even if you get a rubbery under pad. Even if you try tacking it down. Best bet is high-end heavy carpet and just readjust every once and a while.

well, fininigin, if there is no dog, then your collage photo really really is no help.
