Slate for Kitchen Floor?

Hi there,

Wondering if anyone has experience with using slate for an entry hall and kitchen area. We’re remodeling that space for a condo on Cape Cod and have received widely varying opinions on whether slate would be suitable to use for the flooring. I’m looking specifically at Montauk Black from MSI. We are a family of four, but we have guests and gatherings so it would be used regularly. Thoughts? Pros or Cons?

Thanks in advance!

We had 1100 sq ft of slate in our California house, and it was wonderful. Not all slate is the same, ours was a med dark gray quartzite, actually. It was beautiful and easy to care for. Used a 25 yr sealer on it before installed, then did grout sealer, nothing more. We moved after 13+ years of no more maintenance than sweeping and moping. And we had multiple large dogs.

We had slate in a previous home. It was not completely level, so it was hard to sweep. It looked great, though.

We have a porcelain tile that looks like slate in our entry and kitchen. No sealer required; just sweep and mop.

We had multi-color/multi-shape Vermont slate in our kitchen in Maine. It opened directly outside, and at that time, we had 5 dogs. It was wonderful! Snow/water tracked in just dried. My husband did do a thorough cleaning and re-sealing annually. It was a great floor.

We have slate at entry, back entry, and a bathroom. It’s from Vermont Structural Slate and they were terrific to work with. They have a great website, and provide information on the slate they quarry and sell. Ours is very dense and does not need sealer. They do a lot of commercial work and sell what is left over (listed on website). Great folks.

Yes it can be used & yes it can be great, but it also can show EVERYTHING. It just depends on the slate you get & the color of it.
